  1. Hi Everyone, I know there is a page for admissions and GRE questions, but I would really like to get some anthropology-specific answers. I am hoping to apply to Phd programs this fall and I think I have a strong application. However, my math GRE scores will be really low. No study tips needed. I've been studying for a few months and at this point just need to move on and focus on other aspects of my application. So, to get some idea of how much my math scores will set me back in the application process, I wondered who out there got into an anthropology program with really low GRE math scores? How low? Did you get funded? Thank you! Rachel
  2. Thanks for your response. I am hearing from most people that an MA is probably not worth it. I guess I just need to get some Phd applications in this year and see what happens.
  3. Hi Everyone, I have a BA in history and have been out of school and working for about 5 years, and I am planning to get my Phd in sociology. My grades are good, but I don't have a good writing sample and I think my GRE math scores will be low. I've decided to look at MA programs for now because I don't think I would be competitive for Phd programs. Most of the PhD programs I was looking at don't offer MA's. Does anyone have suggestions for good sociology MA programs? My interests are mostly focused on education, conflict, and social movements in Latin America, and in comparative and historical sociology. One more question. My other option would be to do an interdisciplinary MA at Indiana University (I live in Bloomington), either in comparative and international education or Latin American studies, and get a minor in sociology. Would this be helpful in getting into Phd programs, or am I better off going with a sociology MA? Thank you!
  4. Thanks for your response. I will check out the departments you suggested and also the ASA sections.
  5. Does anyone have suggestions for sociology departments that have a strong focus on historical/comparative sociology and political sociology? My specific interests are in education, identity, and social change in Latin America and Africa. Even more specifically, I'm interested in education and the truth and reconciliation process, and education and indigenous rights movements. I studied Latin American history as an undergrad and thought that Soc. was the right field to go into for graduate school, but I'm having a hard time finding schools where professors are working on anything related to my research interests. Any ideas? Thank you!
