  1. Oh jeez major fail on my part. Literally just realized my Stanford app was listed as incomplete. Emailed them asking what exactly I'm missing but I'm expecting a rejection at this point. I guess it's not in the cards for me to stay in California. Anyone else scared of the cold for Midwest/East Coast interviews? lol

Got an email response back from the main biosciences department. They didn't mention what I'm missing or anything and said, "The programs are still selecting applicants for interviews and they hope to have it completed by late next week. "

So there's that... although I'm not sure how relevant that sentence is since it seems automated and don't know when it was written

  2. I had the same problem, it was due to ETS not sending in the official GRE scores correctly, but they told me they would use the self-reported scores and it wouldn't hurt my application. (which I'm almost positive was rejected anyway...)

That makes sense... I'm probably somewhere in the same boat then. Pretty sure I was rejected regardless of what I was missing too.

And see you at the UW interview! Super excited about that one

  3. I wouldn't worry about it. Mine is listed as "incomplete" too, but I don't think it means anything. Absolutely every field is filled out and they've received all my stuff. Also, back in December, I got an email from an administrator asking me to confirm some minor details, and after I sent them the info they said thanks. I assume they would've emailed me again if they needed more information.

That said, I am curious why the online status still says that, so let me know if you get a response about it.

Hmm interesting. Everything else seems to be listed as complete for me too but they didn't email me to confirm anything after I submitted it. Thanks for this info though! I'll post again when I get a response.

  4. Yes, and hearing about this 'polar vortex' certainly isn't making things any easier. Why did I apply to so many east coast schools when I know I hate snow?? Really hoping my two west coast interviews go well...

Right?! Time to break out the heavy jackets and stuff and hope for the best.

    Good luck!

  6. I am so worried about back-up plans. I am an international student and I can't go back home to work because we do not have positions that would help me to strengthen by experience. I am guessing that the back-up options would be: apply to schools with later deadlines and jobs/research positions? Anyone aware of anything else? :o

EDIT: Just got my rejection form Berkeley. Email told me to login to check status of my application.

Just got my official rejection too. At least we have closure?

  7. For UTSW, it was within 2-3 days they sent me a tentative itinerary for me to confirm.

For UW, the coordinator told me they are a little bit delayed in making the travel reservations.  But keep in mind, I only got that invite this past monday.  I am sure the folks that heard before xmas from UW already have their bookings.

also don't have mine yet but all of the interview coordinators I've emailed with stated/implied they'd be sending me itineraries about a week before the actual interview

  8. That depends on the airline; some allow you to switch for free, others don't. I had to switch a United Flight, and it cost me $250. I don't know what the protocol will be if they've booked you on a flight on one of the ones that costs to switch.

Oh dang. I had no idea. Then I seriously hope they haven't booked anything lol

  9. If they haven't yet scheduled your flights, it shouldn't be too difficult... if they have.... Eek!

Thanks! I assumed as much. They responded to my confirmation this morning, so I'm crossing my fingers they haven't booked anything yet or if they have, they're able to switch flights? I sent the school an email about the whole thing but they're on the east coast and I think the office is already closed for the next few days. I guess I'll just wait.

  10. I'm freaking the F out about UW Immunology! I've been in contact with one of the program coordinators that said the final faculty meeting was today and that they will likely have all decisions out by the 23rd..

Thanks for the heads up. Will be freaking out with you... one of my top choices and gah there is no emoticon that reflects how nervous I feel ha

  11. Got the same; I noticed that we will be receiving roommates during our stay. That's the first invite I've gotten that's said that! Which weekend did you choose? I'll be going 2/6 - 2/8.

I think I'll be going to that weekend too! The other weekend conflicts with another school that also has us doubling up.

    See you there probably!

  12. Applied to:

    Harvard DMS - BBS

Johns Hopkins (School of Public Health) - Molecular Microbiology and Immunology

    University of Pitt - IBGP

    UPenn - CAMB- MVP

    Stanford - Micro

    SDSU/UCSD - JDP - cell and molecular

    Mt. Sinai - Micro

    University of Washington - micro

Interviews at UPitt and Johns Hopkins so far.  I confirmed UPitt for weekend of Jan 24th. I haven't heard back from anywhere else yet.

Already there is a dilemma: Harvard's interview dates set as Feb 6-9th or Feb 27-Mar 2nd.  Stanford's is Feb 26th-Mar 2nd and Johns Hopkins(invited for interview) emailed me saying Feb 6-8th (with no suggestion of any other dates). Any advice or suggestions?

    Best of luck!

I'd email Johns Hopkins back asking if they potentially have another interview date available. I also had two schools with conflicting dates but I contacted the school I hadn't already confirmed with letting them know about the conflict, and they were happy to switch me to another weekend.

Or you can wait a bit to see if you get rejected (hopefully not though!) from either Harvard or Stanford? The former is probably a better idea.

  13. Just got an invite to University of Chicago BMD (2/20-2/22)! ... which is right in the middle of the Yale (2/20-2/23) one. In cases like this, do people just try to make it for the interview day itself? Going to email Chicago asking if the interview is spread out over the weekend or if it's just on one day like Yale (2/21). If anyone has any advice/suggestions about this, it'd be appreciated!

  14. I'm a bit lost in terms of which schools to apply to, so any help/comments would be appreciated!

    Undergrad Institution: Top 10 public
    Major(s): Immunology, Plant Biology
    Minor(s):
    GPA in Major: 3.50 (Immunology)
    Overall GPA: 3.48
Position in Class: slight above average?
    Type of Student: Asian female

    GRE Scores (revised/old version):
    Q: 164 (89%)
V: 164 (93%) no idea how that happened
    W: 4.5 (78%)
    B: nope

Research Experience: I'm kind of all over the place...

    At my school:

    - 1.5 years studying plastid evolution in the grasses

    - 1.5 years studying stress resistance in C. elegans

    One summer abroad:

    - studied prostate cancer metastasis

... but sadly no papers or posters

    Awards/Honors/Recognitions:

    - Dean's honors once (the lone award of my undergraduate career haha)

    Pertinent Activities or Jobs:

    - Grader/reader for a few plant classes

    - peer advisor for immunology

    - co-created and taught a few classes (special program at my school allows undergrads to create and teach their own classes)

    - helped organize an interdisciplinary research conference twice

    Special Bonus Points:

Haven't asked yet but the plan is:

One LoR from each of my two PIs on campus and one LoR from a professor I took an intensive lab class with (really small class).

Applying to Where: looking at immunology and some cancer programs

    - UWashington: immunology, pathology, MCB

    - Berkeley

    - UChicago

    - NYU Sackler

    - Stanford

    - Yale

? UCSF, WUSTL, Columbia, Brown ?

GPA's not the highest and no publications, but I'm hoping my LoRs and research experiences help.

I'm not sure if I'm looking at appropriately ranked schools. I'm assuming Yale, Berkeley and Stanford would be my reaches, but does anyone know if I stand a good chance at the other schools?

Also, is applying to three programs at UWashington overkill? It's just that I'm a little freaked out after reading comments about how competitve UWashington Immunology was last year. All three programs are appealing to me, and I just want to increase my chances a bit.

Lastly, assuming the first six schools are fairly to really competitive, should I apply to a few other places (the last four) as well? And are there any other schools I should be looking at?
