  1. Out of curiosity, which webpage did you find those statistics? I typically use google scholar and the results are a bit different. http://scholar.google.com/citations?sortby=pubdate&hl=en&user=FVtXBlwAAAAJ&view_op=list_works
  2. Unless you're underrepresented (Blacks, Hispanics primarily), a woman, or a combo of the 2, you shouldn't suspect your gender/color 'helped' your gain admittance.
  3. Interesting. Didn't know there were that many profs in the aero-dpt at Stanford doing computations. Most of the ones at the turbulence center are associated with the MECH-dpt.
  4. how do you know they sent out acceptances. I'm pretty positive they have not.
  5. No interviews at any of my admits
  6. Received admission in late Dec.
  7. A bunch of my friends were accepted 1-2 weeks ago into the MS program. I applied to the Mech and received a notification back in December.
  8. I heard my friend complaining about UMich's app because you had to submit 2 official transcripts $$$$$ Sounds stupid
  9. I don't think you can do the latter. These labs typically don't hire outsiders unless it's for a post-doc/research scientist position, but those require a PhD. Try finding a job at a national lab or a job in industry that does research. Then reopp
  10. Stanford's MS programs isn't regarded highly by those in academia (different story for industry) because they do not give funding to most of their admitted MS applicants and it's not very selective because of that. It's meant to be a program that brings in money and not meant to produce exceptional grad students. The program recognizes people would pay for the Stanford name.
  11. Did you go to UMich for undergrad or something? My friend applied to UMich's aero program. His uncle's a prof there and told him that admission decisions will not be sent out for a couple more weeks (early-mid feb).
  12. Hmmm interesting. Didn't know UMich did interviews for either of those departments.
  13. Missed this thread somehow. Lots of interesting profiles in here, some with very similar interests to mine. Undergrad Institution: Princeton Major(s): Mechanical&Aerospace Engineering Minor(s): Math&Physics GPA in Major: 4.0 Overall GPA: 3.93 Length of Degree:4 (Are you graduating after 3, 4, or 5 years?) Position in Class: (No numbers needed, but are you top? near top? average? struggling?) Type of Student:White Male GRE Scores: Q: 168 V: 168 W: 5.5 TOEFL Total: (if applicable, otherwise delete this) Research Experience: (At your school or elsewhere? What field? How much time? Any publications (Mth author out of N?) or conference talks etc...) 2 years in a few labs at home university in experimental fluids with several NAE profs. 1st author in a Physics of Fluids paper. Second author in a JFM paper. 2 REUs and a Caltech SURF - all in computational methods Awards/Honors/Recognitions: (Within your school or outside?) Goldwater, nothing else that's notable. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: (Such as tutor, TA, organization officer etc...) Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Developed a numerical library that solves various physics phenomena. Most of which are not new. Applying for [ MS ] or [ PhD ] at: Stanford - M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (Parviz Moin) - Accepted. Will not go unless they fully fund me. Caltech - PhD in Aero (Dale Pulllin) - Informal Acceptance (Prof in the department also wrote me a letter) MIT - PhD in Aero - No idea, don't really want to go. Cambridge - PhD in Aero - Confusing application process. Don't even know if I fully completed my app. I really want to study under Moin in computational turbulence, but Stanford's MS programs are a bit disappointing. Not very selective and is mainly a program meant to bring in money rather than producing exceptional graduate students. Also applied for the GRFP, NDSEG, and Hertz. If I win any I will probably not take it to Stanford for the reason above unless they offer me internal funding first (I want to know whether they're just accepting me so I can bring in tuition money or if they actually want me). A bit late, but might be helpful to know. For anyone applying to Princeton in the field of experimental fluids, i think Stone is looking to take a few graduate students this year, so chances are a lot better. This guy has been absolutely amazing in the past decade in his research output. Publishing in Nature, PNAS, JFM left and right, literally. http://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=6iwsuOEAAAAJ&pagesize=100&sortby=pubdate&view_op=list_works
  14. Is your interview at UMich for the mech or aero department? My friend applied to the aero department and hasn't heard anything. It seems like they haven't sent out any offers as of yet. Also, I can't seem edit my previous post. The first line shouldn't be there (copy&paste fail).
  15. Copied from the CS thread since I'm applying to both: General Profile: -White Male US Citizen -UG: Princeton -Major: Mechanical&Aerospace Engineering (BS) -Minors: Math&Physics -GPA: 3.93/4.0 (4.0 major) -GRE: 168V / 168Q / 5,5W Research Experience: Like 2+ years @ university, 2 REUs&Caltech SURF 1st author publication in Physics of Fluids Area(s) of Interests: -Turbulence&fluids, Schools Applied (ME PhD program unless otherwise specified): -Stanford (PhD in ME) -MIT (PhD in Aero) -Caltech (PhD in Aero) -Cambridge
  16. Anyone here apply for Fall 2014 Aerospace Engineering? If so, has anyone heard of acceptance/rejections yet? If so, at which school? It seems, at least from the gradcafe results, that the decisions are made a bit later for us aero majors.
  17. Yep I saw that. I would check with the department you're applying for and weren't apps due already?
  18. I did the exact same thing. I called the school and they said if I specified both, the institution will receive it first, so they should hold it.
  19. Sorry for laughing, but that's hilarious. A 130 is like you knew the answers, but purposedly answered every single one wrong.
  20. I've encountered this. it is what happens when you try to upload 2 documents at once. The document that you try to upload first is uploaded for both essays for some reason.
  21. I have a few qustions regarding sending GRE scores to prospective schools. On my ETS account it shows the institution I have sent my scores to as well as the department. For one of the schools I am applying for, they wanted it sent to the institution as a whole not the specific department I'm applying for. I sent it to the department in that institution, but I have no idea how any of this works. The admin coordinator there is also not responsive so I don't even know if they received my scores. Do you guys know how score report sending works? I.e., if you listed an institution and the respective department, who gets the document?
  22. I once heard a prof say this: if you can't perform under pressure on a test, then I have no confidence in you in performing better on far more important things. Another prof told me he throws away all applications where the applicant makes excuses about their test scores. I would not blame it on nerves or pressure getting to you. That's a real negative to advoms if you think about it. Would you want someone who chokes under pressure. Making these excuses does to look well to adcoms.
  23. Okay phew. I'm not that great with Word.Doc terminology. When I specified the size of the white line space, I set it as "0.5" instead of 1, but I don't think that has anything to do with the "single spacing."
  24. I read all the rules and I'm not sure why this would violate the rules, particularly the rules about spacing. My previous post was pretty confusing, so I attached an image to illustrate what I meant. So in the top example, there's a whole empty line. In the bottom, I reduced that space to half of the top (this is what I had in my essay). I have not seen any rules regarding this nor have I seen anything that you have to have a space between a sentence and heading though it would look better if you did. In my 3 page essay, I actually didn't even have a space between the last sentence of the preceding paragraph and the heading.
