  1. Hi all, congratulations!! I just graduated from Cornell with my bachelors and am getting ready to move across the country for my PhD. Although I'm not staying in Ithaca for graduate school, I've had three years of experience living off campus in a variety of places so I wanted to offer advice on housing or Ithaca in general if anyone needs it! Feel free to message me. Congrats again! Ithaca is one of the most incredible places I could imagine living, and I hope you'll love it too.

    I sent you a message! :)

  2. Ok nice!how many days did you wait to receive it?

It took quite a lot. I accepted the offer near the end of March and received I-20 in May......so it took more than a month!

  3. I also got an email a week later than you :) Have you received your I-20?

Yes, I got it even twice because of an error in first one. F-1 VISA interview is reserved in next week.

By the way, I got wrong vaccine for 'TDAP'. So I have to take it again!! Waste of money :(

  4. Hi again! I contacted the graduate school! They told me that once our department sends some appropriate documents to the grad school and they are processed, the will contact us with more details on the next steps (including visa). So Ithink  we just have to relax!

    Thanks! Another nice waiting :)

  5. Hello again

Is there any person here requiring I-20 or some documents for F-1 visa?

Does your department normally inform you about it? (Which means I just need to relax and wait?)

Or Should it be done by my own hands contacting international-blah-institution in Cornell?

  6. I've officially accepted my offer to the MechE PhD program. Time to start looking for housing! What neighborhoods is everyone else looking in?

Hey babubot, with this thread, I think we can find some info from the thread below.

  7. Hi nermah1! I am in exactly the same situation and got no email after submitting the acceptance :P

I guess it is normal...According to the site for new students, the gradschool starts creating NetIDs after 31 March so we have to calm down :)

OK Koyote :) So which program are you going to attend? Nice to see one more Cornell guy :)

  8. Online. The same website you submit your application to.

Considering it has only been 4 days I wouldn't worry. It seems like they send out all further information in batches probably when all students have enrolled.

Thanks, Germanstudent. I think I have got too paranoid. :) I'd rather stay calm.

  9. Hi guys,

I'm going to attend Cornell from this Fall, too.

I submitted my "acceptance" at their decision response website.

But there have been no reply mail or something.

    I hope I didn't accidentally send "decline"......!!!

  10. This was generally what I sent to those schools I declined offers at:

    Dear _______,

I'd like to thank you, along with everyone I had contact with during my application and interview process for the _______ Program at _________. I had a very positive experience with the university, and am sure it would undoubtedly be a great place to complete one's graduate work.

I have, however, decided to attend another university that I feel is a better fit for me, and thus I cannot accept my offer of admission at __________.

Thank you very much for the opportunity.

    Sincerely,

    IncretinEffect33

Something nice and straight to the point. No need to explain why you didn't choose them, or that they were your top second choice, etc. etc. They'll probably actually want you to fill out a small form/survey about the process, and that will ask you where you are attending, as well as what was good and bad about the whole process, so you'll get to give your thoughts that way. At least the schools where I declined asked me to do that.

Congrats on your acceptances, and good luck with your decision!

    Thanks for quick response, IncretinEffect!

You got accepted to 6 and that must be a hard decision to pick one!

I only have to send one decline but it still hurts

    I appreciate your form :)

  11. Hey guys

Now it is time to decline one program for the sake of another.

I wish I had been accepted to just one program so that I don't have to make

    any decision.

By the way....I've already seen some posts about these but could you show me any form of declining e-mail?

I know here are many excellent applicants accepted to many programs at the same time.

You must have some auto-form like the schools sending for rejections.

    (Situation reversed!)

Any idea or would you show me some forms?

Frankly speaking, I am exhausted to make some formal kind wording....

  12. My current PI did her PhD at MIT Biology as well. Since she said I should apply to MIT, I asked her what she liked the most about it (I was skeptical about applying at first). She said the best thing about MIT was not its research, program, nor the professors (all of which are already stellar), but its peers. They become your friends for life, she said. The strong community at MIT Biology seems like a tradition that has been handed down the years. BTW, I learned yesterday "The Pit" was named by the students around the time my PI was there... the room was originally in a basement with no windows, and hence came the name. After they built 68, it was relocated to the first floor of 68, but the name stuck.

About research fit: if you have about 4-5 professors you can see yourself working with, I think you'll be fine at either schools. I am one of those who is inclined towards research that is clinically relevant, so solely based on research interests I might lean towards other schools with more hospital affiliations. However, I do have 5+ faculty at MIT whose research I find very interesting, and that's all that matters to me. Your research career is most determined by your post-doc work anyways. Also, my impression of Harvard was that it is a bit more competitive and less community based than MIT, 1) due to its bigger size and dispersed nature, and 2) its practice of hiring multiple faculty and making them compete for one tenure spot (MIT only hires one faculty per open slot)... but I can be wrong on this so please correct me if I am misguided.

I am biased towards MIT, as I only interviewed there and not at Harvard... can someone please speak for BBS please? Well, you did visit both programs, and I guess it's ultimately up to your gut feeling to decide where you'll be happier. Best of luck!

She said the best thing about MIT was not its research, program, nor the professors (all of which are already stellar), but its peers. They become your friends for life, she said.

-----> This is an impressive comment! Actually sometimes I learn more from my peers, too.....lol

  13. I'm utterly lost right now because I am smitten with both programs, and would be 100% happy with either. However, my SO has some job interviews in the Denver area this week, and jobs for him will likely be a rate-determining step in my decision-making process. I'm not looking saying "no" to one, but it's a great feeling to have this choice to make!

I see :D It is very nice to match SO's workplace and your grad program!

As an international, I saw some couples apart from each other more than 500 miles or so after they got admission.

They were separate for some years for their PhD degree program......which I cannot imagine!! :P

  14. Got an informal reject from Irvine. It was one of my three favorite programs, so it does bother me a little. They specifically quoted my grades, saying it wasn't as good as other international students. Oh well, I guess this makes my choice easier.

It is a little bit weird of them to quote your grade.

But on the other hand, it is good to know the exact reason.

For me, pretending to be gentle like "we have unprecedented number of applicants...." is even worse.
