Fall 2014 applicants??
andromache replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Sooooo...besides my waitlist at Case (which I'll take if accepted) I'll take any information I can get about MA programs at Fordham, Carnegie Mellon, and University of Denver if anyone knows things, recommends them, doesn't recommend them, etc. -
Thoughts on living in the Bronx? I've been accepted to Fordham and I'm seriously considering it, and I see a lot of discussion of Manhattan and Brooklyn, but not much for the Bronx. There's no way I could afford to live in Manhattan, but how do Brooklyn and the Bronx compare as to cost of living, safety, etc. As a twenty-two year old woman who isn't really "tough" looking or anything like that, is the Bronx less safe of a place for me? Most of my experience is living in relatively small towns with not much NYC experience, although I'm used to living alone/walking alone/traveling alone.

Emailed Boston to get my rejection, but they said the committee is still working on decisions. I'm taking that to be "we're taking awhile to get all of our rejections out." -

Considering emailing Case where I've been waitlisted and letting them know that I've heard back from all my schools (assuming rejection from BU at this point) and that they are my top choice, and that I will be accepted an offer should there become space in the program for me. I'd also like to mention to them that as a backup plan, I'm working on planning visits at the end of March to two other universities which will cost me a bit of money, so the sooner I can have news from Case, the better? (Obviously I'd put it in a more polite, professional way than this.) I'd hate to book a flight/hostel in NYC to visit Fordham, only to hear back from Case a few weeks later and have wasted my money. Is anyone else have a similar issue, with wanting to plan visits to other schools but also hoping you'll get off a waitlist to your top choice? -

Still haven't gotten mine.... -
Hello all! Unfortunately my PhD plans haven't quite worked out, but I'm receiving a number of unfunded and partially funded MA offers. At the moment, I think the best offer I have is from an MA program that only takes one year to complete. Has anyone done a one year MA program, or can anyone comment on how a one year program might look on PhD applications? My biggest concern is that a few months into the program I'll be putting out PhD applications again, and will not have built the necessary relationships with professors for letters of recommendation. Anyway, I'm just looking to see what others might have experienced in one year Master's program.

I'm wondering if it means we're being considered for the MA, but not the PhD? -

At this point, mostly waiting to here from Fordham MA and UWashington MA, and to see if I make it off the wait list at Case. I'd love an offer than provides more than just half-tuition. -

Has anyone else just not heard anything at all from Boston University? I haven't been accepted, or rejected. It looks like acceptances went out last week, and rejections this past weekend. But I still haven't heard anything! -
I've applied and been accepted to an MA program at the University of Denver, and I'm kind of curious as to what it's like/if it's possible to live near the university as a grad student without a car....

Accepted to MA in English at University of Denver! Their website doesn't have a ton of information, and I kind of applied there on a whim at the time, so I'm hoping to find out info about possible funding soon. -

Getting down again about this whole process with one unfunded MA offer, one partially funded MA offer, and one wait list for MA funding. Spent the last two weeks emotionally invested in Olympic figure skating, which effectively distracted me from this. And now I'm feeling the stress and hopelessness again. When it comes down to it, if I have to, the partially funded offer might be my best bet. It's only a one year program, so I wouldn't be going into as much debt. Still debt, but. Ideally I'll get off the wait list for the funded program, but at this point, I think that's my best shot for good news. I made such a mistake by applying to so many top tier PhD programs! What was I thinking?? -
Should I do an unfunded MA?
andromache replied to Mr protagonist's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
After receiving an acceptance to a partially-funded MA and an acceptance to an unfunded MA in Liberal Studies, this post is so relevant to me. It's getting pretty clear I'm not going to be able to get into a PhD program coming from my BA, unfortunately. I think my application is relatively strong. My GPA is great, great GRE scores, interesting writing sample, etc, but I think what's holding me back is that I'm coming from such a low-ranked Location University of Nowhere institution. The education I received there was wonderful, but not a big name that stands out on a CV. I want to be in academia, it's where my strengths and my passions are. I've taken a year off. Unfortunately, some of us can't afford to spend this sort of time traveling, or volunteering, or doing an unpaid internship to strengthen our applications. I'm working two terrible part time jobs that I hate, and god, I really, really don't want to do this for another year, only to make the application gamble again and not get in anywhere funded. I think waiting a year, and reapplying is a viable option for people who have secure jobs that they do not loathe, that allow them to pay the bills, but I'm starting to feel like this isn't an option for me. I live in a small town, too, and I can't afford to relocate to a city that might allow me more opportunities for growth/employment/etc. UGH MONEY. Still hoping there's a slim chance I'll get in somewhere funded, though. -

Rejected from CUNY's PhD program, but accepted to the MA in liberal studies. Can't find any funding info, so I'm assuming that there isn't any. I just want to get into a program with FUNDING! -

As someone who wants to focus on gender and feminist studies in contemporary culture and media, I feel like I could write an entire thesis on all the problems with nearly everyone in that marriage thread. -

I see an CWRU MA acceptance on the board...if anyone gets accepted to this program and doesn't plan on attending, let them know right away. Obviously because it's the polite thing to do and has nothing to do with my status on their wait list. XD -

For CMU I applied to the PhD and was accepted to the MA. Maybe they're taking longer to sift through the people who they actually want for the PhD program? -

I'm really shocked to have heard from two MA programs (CMU and Case) so soon after the Jan 15th deadline. -

Wait listed at Case Western. It's a funded MA program, and with all of my rejections/implied rejections from PhD programs, one of my top choices at this point in the process. -
