  1. I really don't appreciate that they are not flexible at all, but I can understand their need to evaluate a participant in person, I mean in the end you are applying to a position where you will be counseling and treating individuals. Therefore requesting to meet you in person is understandable. Another thing I was wondering about is - I am sure that you knew, especially as a third time applicant, that there would be interviews in person and interview weekend events - is this something you planned ahead for?
  2. so i wrote post doc and what kind of place I would be interested in and then wrote tenure-track position at a university with research, teaching and supervision. Do I need to be more specific - i.e. what specific university, what specific research lab I want to establish? I feel like I'm just reiterating make goals for grad school.
  3. There is a question in one of my apps (clinical psych phd) about my professional plans following graduation. Would it be too general to say that I want to do a post-doc? How could I be more specific about this, given it will only be in 5-6 years. Also -there is only place for 500 characters.
  4. Dear JustApsychologist, I think you have amazing stats. and credentials and I can't imagine how hard it must have been to be such a successful student and deal with mental illness at the same time. I think it's amazing that you've discovered what makes you happy and I can only encourage you to pursue your dreams. I am sure you will accomplish them. You are really young and have your whole life ahead of you, there is no reason to think that you won't accomplish your dreams at this point in time. I think its unhelpful to think what will happen when you get accepted and worry about failure due to your illness or lack of confidence. The fact is that you succeeded well in your studies up till now and you didn't fail. On the contrary, you shined. The application process is stressful and alienating for everyone however, having panic attacks and severe anxiety when writing your SOP and letters to POI's just doesn't feel right - as you said so yourself. I'm sorry to hear that you have no one to discuss this with in real life and going through this without support can be very lonely. Is there a colleague/advisor/supervisor/counsellor you can talk to? I'm wondering how having support and someone to speak to during the process might make things a little easier. Best of luck,
  5. Sure this is where I'm applying to: Northwestern University - Feinberg School of Medicine, City University of New York, Columbia Teachers College, Long Island University, Brooklyn Fairleigh Dickinson University American University WashU Emory
  6. You guys (and girls!) are amazing! Decided to make the connection anyway - its not everyday that you get a direct connection like this.
  7. Thanks PsychGirl! i though about that only my advisor is not so familiar with the application process to programs in the US and was even not sure how to make the connection with this other professor...
  8. A while ago I showed my research advisor/prof. a list of schools I'm applying to and they said that they know one of the profs there. So I thought it would be good to make a connection at that school. My research advisor wrote an email to this prof. that he has worked with, recommending me to the program etc. and now that prof. has wrote back writing that they will be taking a student and that I should send him my research interests etc. to see if I will be a match for his lab, only...I'm less interested in his work and more interested in working with another faculty member. How should I go about this? Will I totally kill my chances if I mention that I actually want to work with someone else? Should I fain having interest in his lab? Or at least mention some interest but mention that I my work aligns with more with someone else? How to do this in a diplomatic way? I feel stupid that I asked for this connection now and worried that it will badly reflect on me in some way...
  9. very reassuring to hear that others haven't started their SOP's yet! I also have a Nov. deadline and kinda freaking out - but guess we are in the same boat!
  10. Hey Everyone, I am international student applying to Clinical PhD programs and didn't realize that there is a strict schedule for contacting profs. Will it be too late to contact them now? Does it look desperate since it is too close to the deadline. I assumed that since applications are only reviewed late December/ early Jan. that sending out an email in Oct. is ok. Also reading here a lot that POI's only reply after several weeks, even months. Another question I have is that some programs mention specifically that it is unnecessary to contact faculty and that applications are reviewed by everyone - would it be rude to send a POI an email in this case? Any advice here will be extremely helpful! Thanks!
  11. Anyone here a student at LIU? Or know of someone who is? I haven't been able to obtain contacts of current students and would love to hear what the program is like from a student's perspective.
  12. Applying to 12 Clinical PhD programs for fall 2014. GRE psych. next week. Written some LOI's - haven't received answers. Is this normal? Any other international students out there?
