  1. I keep coming back and reading this post. All these amazing words really do help those of us who are struggling with the rejections. I just found out I was turned down by PSU and to be honest I'm pretty devastated. I have over a decade of work experience, though not in social work, and recently returned to finally finish school while raising my daughter. I have a 3.92 with a 4.1 in my major, anthropology. I had a lot of folks review my statement, many of whom are social workers, and they thought it was really strong. I have volunteer experience in social work, though only just under a year of paid experience. I know my letters of reference were all strong. Other than more experience, I'm not sure how to improve my chances....
  2. I hope you're right! I got an email that said "I guarantee you will hear from us by the week of March 24." Now I'm obsessing on when that means I will hear from them...to me by the week of the 24th should mean the end of this week, but it could easily be taken to mean the end of next week. Yeah...I need to stop thinking about this. Ha.
  3. At least we aren't alone. If you hear back would you mind letting me know? At this point I'm just sick of waiting. I found out PSU would allow me to do some of the work online so that I could finish up what I am working on in Spain so if that works out, that may be a better fit for me...especially with instate tuition. There is a lot I really like about the UW program though and at this point I just really want to know!
  4. Well, I haven't heard anything yet from UW and I'm guessing that means it is unlikely I got in. Anyone else hear one way or another?
  5. Wow! Those are all great programs...having to decide certainly isn't the worst situation to be in! I also have co-authored three academic articles published in various journals, but they are in anthropology, specifically in nutritional anthropology. I did a lot of volunteer work as well and started a program that assisted low income mothers and children with gaining access to adequate nutrition. I've always worked and have been a part of many programs that have made a large impact on my communities. I currently work in Spain with two different organizations that assist immigrant children in their first years living here. That plus my grades (I got over a 4 point by getting an A+ in every class but two, in which I got an A, for the last two years) made me think I had a good chance of getting in, but I obviously have stiff competition! I do think you are correct in saying that I may just not be the right fit. Fortunately I have some great professional offers that will prevent me from getting too upset if I end up not getting accepted. I'm thankful you listed your history here; it makes me feel somehow better ro know the caliber of folks who are being accepted. Again, congratulations on all of your acceptances, it is obvious they are well deserved!
  6. Congratulations!!! I appreciate the pep talk as well. This has been a humbling experience. I came into this a little too sure of myself. I have over a 4 point, great letters, experience, both in my community and personally as a single mom putting myself through school while working. I returned to school after a decade of work experience, though not in SW. When I spoke with professors about my plans to go this route, they encouraged me to look at PhD programs and almost acted as if this was below me academically. I probably sound like a jerk, but part of the reason I decided to go this route is because it seemed safe and secure and I wasn't sure I could handle the work associated with some of the other options I was considering when my child is so young. Don't get me wrong...I am really impressed by the people I know in social work and I love the idea of working with and for people and communities; this was NOT settling, I just had been lead to believe that getting into a program if my choice wouldn't be that difficult. Now ummm...well, I should have applied for more than two schools obviously!! It's a good learning experience and I'm thankful for the lesson in humility! Again, congrats to you!!! Is this your first choice? I hear it is a great program.
  7. Yikes...I can't imagine going through this twice. I hope you make it this year!!!
  8. Thanks for taking the time to write that. I'll admit that I feel pretty discouraged, especially since I only applied to two schools, but I guess I'll just keep hoping that I make the final list. Good luck to you! If you heard any other gems at those sessions, please share away. I'll have to find more things to obsess on now that this painful wait and see period has been further extended...
  9. I won't hear back from PSU until April 30th so I guess I'm waiting it out. Being rolled over into the second wave doesn't make me feel really confident about my chances though.
  10. I just heard from UW...but just to say they won't have a decision for me until March 24th.
  11. That's what I applied for too! I'm so glad you got in...I know how stressful being able to apply to only one school can be. Luckily it's a great program! Congrats again...I hope you're celebrating!
  12. Woohoo! Congrats!!! Did you just get it?? I'm hoping I don't have too much longer to wait. Congrats!!!!!
  13. I imagine the folks that sent that out chuckling evily...I think I may be losing it. Ha. I just double checked the website and it does say that those who had everything in for early consideration will know by the end of February so I guess my wait will be over one way or another soon. Here's to hoping we all get in!
  14. I just checked my email and had an email from UW! Annnnd it was a survey about my experience applying. Pfffttt. Maybe don't send that out just when we are waiting to hear what direction our lives are heading!
  15. Also, I'm curious, did you apply anywhere else? Is UW your first choice?
  16. I really hope it's tomorrow.... Please oh please don't let them stretch it out until Monday. Good luck...I look forward to hearing about your acceptance!!!
  17. Nobody??? This wait is killing me. I know some early consideration folks found out March 1st last year and I'm really hoping we don't have to wait until Monday since the first is on a Saturday...
  18. I know we have until the 1st but it is killing me. PSU isn't giving an answer until March 30th. I turned everything in in late December and this has become the longest couple months of my life....and that includes the last part of my pregnancy. Fortunately I'm currently working in Spain so that is distracting but I still find myself checking and checking the status of my applications for no good reason. Help me keep my sanity if you can!
  19. I know, I can't stop checking....it's ridiculous. Please let me know if you hear anything!!!
  20. I haven't heard back yet! I'm betting that hearing from financial aid is a good thing...at least from what I've seen in other threads. I haven't even gotten that. Good luck!!! Let me know if you hear back...
  21. Yeah...the research I've done seems to say that the salary and career path is fairly similar. My issue is that I'm interested in doing an MSW for a more micro approach and then the MPH for a more macro/policy approach. I'm interested in working with immigrant populations, women and children in particular. In this globalized economy where labor is commodified, many people are forced to migrate across borders for work. So many of these people are subject to structural violence, the "clinical gaze", etc. I want to be able to work one on one with members of this community and also work on larger public health issues and populations. UW has a MPH with a global focus that looks amazing! Another year means a lot more money though...
  22. Is anyone applying for or enrolled in a MSW/MPH program? I'm planning on starting in an MSW program and then adding a MPH, hopefully at UW. I'd love to hear any insights on this combination you may have...
  23. Congrats to all of you! I just finished up my application for early consideration for UW today. I'm sure the wait is going to be a ton of fun. Ha.
