I haven't been to it in my travels to the area yet, but I heard that the Dushanbe Teahouse is awesome! As is all of Boulder from my experiences thus far. Excited to move there in a couple months!

PIs understand that the GRFP is an NSF venture that requires more than a little bit of luck. I'm sure your PI has applied to umpteen grants (probably lots from NSF) that he or she has not received. You should celebrate your awesomeness if you happen to get an honorable mention or an award, but if not, at least you got some experience with NSF out of the deal. Any reputable PI understands the grant writing x-factor (x="random"); The GRFP is largely roulette. ...Hopefully this isn't too fluffy for you, but let's everyone take a minute of perspective and pat ourselves on the back, yeah?... We got into grad school. Be kind to yourselves and try not to obsess over what is out of your control. You and your science already have worth with or without the GRFP, and on top of it all, I'm sure you wrote a kickass proposal, otherwise you would not have submitted--no shame in that! Mirroring what others have mentioned, getting into grad school would not affect your chances (aside from needing to be enrolled to accept/receive award). Also, I heard from a colleague of a 2014 reviewer that they were done reviewing a few weeks ago. They've probably since been working on lists and logistics (purely speculation and spookery of course). Best of luck to everyone when the GRFP groundhog comes out of his hole in a week or two! Hey! I was recently accepted to CU Boulder EBIO, and it's a top choice contender for next fall. My SO and I considering living in Broomfield or Westminster so he can commute to work in Denver. Could you (or anyone) elaborate on the public transportation and busing system you mentioned? I'm just curious if there are options if my (old) car breaks down or something. Would it be easy to use public transit?

I'm utterly lost right now because I am smitten with both programs, and would be 100% happy with either. However, my SO has some job interviews in the Denver area this week, and jobs for him will likely be a rate-determining step in my decision-making process. I'm not looking saying "no" to one, but it's a great feeling to have this choice to make!

Haha, I feel the same way, but I think that's just the way it is for us EEB folks. Berkeley took ~1.5 months post interview to accept me (even though my POI told me at my interview I was in), and one of my programs' grad committee is just now meeting today to decide on applicants. Our season just seems a little bit more drawn out (and late) than other bio programs. At least we know we'll hear back soon as April is coming.

I think it's always more awkward for us as applicants than it actually is for the professors. Ultimately, I truly believe (and have been told by POIs) that, in general, professors, schools, etc. all just want what is best for the student. If not, they're probably not someone you'd necessarily want to be working with anyways. Although these things are definitely an awkward situations, as long as you are polite and don't mislead anyone, I am sure your decisions will be respected. Like Vene said though, if rotations are available go for that:)
