  1. So a question posted on behalf of my friend. V 153 (58%) Q 158 (72%) W 3 (14%) V 152 (53%) Q 157 (69%) W 3.5 (35%)
  2. Thank you Canis! I have an more ideal recommender who was too busy to write but now offers me a letter since he is in vocation. Having already sent out my recommendation requests, I am hoping to get some tips on dealing with the change without offending my previous recommender.
  3. I have four options for picking LoR, and for a particular program, I want to exclude one recommendar who I've already sent out the request and replace it with another. If the letter is submitted, and I exclude it, will my recommendar be notified? I hope not let the first recommendar feel unhappy. Does anyone in a similiar situation before? Thank you and Happy new year!
  4. Hi everyone, I should've probably asked AdCom, but just in case you might have a quick answer: If I excluse A letter in the system and replace with B, will professor A notice the change after he/she submitted the letter?
  5. Thanks Canis! But I doubt it will be the case, since usaully proffs are way too busy to do that. Especially in my case, I know he will have to write letters for many students. When I asked him if he would be willing to write me a letter, he replied immediately (1 minute after I sent out the email) with a positive yes. I hope that's a positive sign.
  6. Hi guys, I sent a reminder of LoR to my proff. about the application deadline. He replied me within an hour and 10 mms saying that the letter has been done and sent. Although the proff. has decades of experiences in writing letters, and he knows me well, I still wonder if such a short time of writing would make my letter less strong? By contrary, another recommender of mine looked carefully on the LoR package I sent to him (even asked a naunced question) and wrote it several days before he sent it out. I am a bit concerned.
  7. Thank you, TakeMyCoffeeBlack! That's what I think as well!
  8. Thank you so much, guys!! I replied saying that A and B schools are actually the programs (which are the top two in my field) that I really want to attend. Proff. replied: Then go with them. Both are exellent and both are expensive, but I take it that funding is not a key issue for you. I will write after reading your statement of interests, and blabalabala......He is generally nice and helpful. But he is really tough on academic, maintain high standard... I am not sure if how I should imply weather the letter will be good or not...
  9. Thank you guys for your response. I am very confused as well...I don't know what can I do...Can I ask him directly why he would suggest me to just apply 3-4 schools? Or he is just simply too busy to submit lots of schools? The full sentence read" Choose three, maximun four and keep me posted."
  10. I am hoping that by "generic", he means that he will make the letter suitable for all schools. I am wondering by pointing out the number of school, does that mean he sees a point of getting focused on schools, and as well for his letter? And by the way, he is a Canadian.
  11. I sent a list of schools I am applying to my recommendar. It is six in total, and 2 of them are schools are really want to go. My recommendar replied "All are fine, and all are American...Choose three, four maximum...I will prapre for a generic one"...I don't know what does that imply?
  12. I once a P.S. that has a long list of reference. It was for PhD. The author hit the H. University.
  13. Thank you everyone for all your thoughtful responses!!! They have been really helpful!!! Just an update: I've asked the second professor to write my letter, and he gave an immediate positive reply. What I'll need to do is to send him over my purpose of interests, e-address, etc. I am also plannign to send him some of my writing that might be interest to his area of focus and a sheet of facts of our intereactions to ease his memory recalling process (hopefully to make my letter more detailed and personal). What is unexpected to me is that I thought my academic letter would have no problems, but my targeted professor hasn't replied me and it's the fifth day. It is very rare, since we had email interactions just weeks before and all seem go well. He is generous man, very nice to his student and I had a sense that our relationship would last for years despite of my graduation. I know he is a busy person, but this is just making me a bit freeking out. So I still have headeche picking the academic letter. I have two letters supposing to comment my initiatives taken outside of the class, and I really need one strong academic letter to show my "intellectual distinction", if borrow the words of criteria. And I have three candidate professors to pick: 1). A very distinctive historian. Very renowened in his filed, but not directly related to my major which is international relations. If he says yes, then I trust him that the letter will be good. Otherwise I think he would just ignore your request. 2). My targeted professor in poli sci department. Very nice and very generous in showing his praises. He will write good thing I am sure for that. But he is just too busy that he might not have enough time and energy writing me a very personal letter. I don't think a letter full praises will make a strong case for my dream program which is very selective. 3). The first professor I mentioned here. Senior proff. in International Relations. 3 courses with him. Confident that will get a descent letter. But not sure if he will fully endorse and support me. Folks, thoughts and comments are really welcomed!
  14. Also, I have another question. Is it ideal that the RoL's from your departmental major? I am applying for Master in Public Policy, a professional program, and I need to prove that I have ability to succeed in classes rather than to be successful in one particular filed as an academic. So in this sense, can I choose a professor (who is really a big name in his filed but slightly different from my major: History v.s. International Relations) but knows my coursework well? Thank you again!
  15. Thank you Mocha and Double Shot for your replies! I decide to exclude the first Proff, even though he witnessed by progress during the years. I will go for the second one for sure.
  16. Hello everyone! I had headache with picking whom to write my letters, and am really hoping to get some advice! One professor with whom I took 3 courses. He is one of the most senior professors in poli sci department. He knew me well. I went to his office often, attended seminars he hosted out of class, and interned in a think tank with which he affliated. But he is very tough. I am sure he will write me a desent letter, but not sure if he will rank me as outstanding or one of the best (He was very generous to provide his letters but he said he would rank students among all he has taught.) Another professor is a big name is policy circule. I knew him because I invited him to speak to an international conference I organized. Later, I audited his graduate classes once, actively attended seminars he hosted, and keep him updated about my recents. My interaction with him is not as much as with the first professors, but perhaps I left better impression on him, and I was one of the few undergrads he had interacted that much. Another close professor of mine who knows both of them suggest that this professor will generally write a nicer letter, and it will be a "safe" choice if he is willing to write. The concern is that I am not sure if my interaction with him would provide enough information to allow him write an informed letter. P.S.: I am aiming for MPP/MIA which requires lots of professional experiences. I have one great academic letter for sure, and I am wondernig if I choose the second professor (mentioned above) who would write my abilities out of class will be a good plus? Thank you everyone for your generous thoughts and suggestions!
  17. Also, I have a specific delimma on choosing LoR and would appreciate your suggestions! My Background: 1). Applying for MPP/MIA for 2014 fall admission. Focus on media and international policy. 2). Recent graduate with a B.A. in International Relations 3). Had two internship with major media outlets in my country. Currently intern with a current affair talk show. Took a summer school at Harvard on Journalism. Other internship/extracurriculair include: a think tank/international development agency/leadership role in student-led conferences/organizations Letter One: A professor who knows me well and will write me a good letter. ???Letter Two: Professor B v.s. Professor C v.s. Professor E 1). Professor B: A historian. very well-known and renowned in his filed. I did very well in his class. He even said let him know when my graduation happens and he will try to make it. (Given that he is not at all a professor who is generous with his time for student, that's really something ). So I guess he will write me a good letter on my active class contribution, strong motivation and intellectual curiosity (might be relevant for MPP candidate?). Concern is that he is in history but I am applying for an IR/public program. 2). Professor C: An senioar IR Scholar. Took 3 courses with him (grades are straight up every time but not the highest). Often visit him in office hour. Know me well, but I don't think he will rank me as the most top students he has taught (he said he will rank when writing RoL). 3). Professor E: A well-known IR Scholar, focusing on Policy. Never teach undergraduates but I met him because I often went to public seminars/lectures on IR hosted by the policy institute in my university (He was the head of the Institute). Invited him to the conference I helped organized as speaker. Audited his graduate class for 2-3 times with his permission. Occacional email corespondence to update my currents on study. Not sure if that's enough information for him to write a letter. ???Letter Three (professional Letter): Mr. X v.s. Mr. Y 1). Mr.X: A leading economist in my country. Met him when he was a visiting scholar in my university (I am from Asia and go to college in North America), invited him to speak at an international conference I helped organize (I moderated the panel he attended), and establish good personal relationship. When I was an intern with a national newspaper, I attended the press conference of a high profile conference he helped organize, and also arrange an interviews for another high-profile conference he organized with my current show. Good thing: He knows me well, and can speak of my abilities in professional settings. He also knows my goals and aspirations, chacters, and will write me a supportive letter. Concern: since I will stress my goal in media indsutry, I am wondering if I need a letter directly from people in the filed. ==> Candidate 2) 2). Mr. Y. Director and host of my show, a well-know host in my country. Among his interviewees include many well-known scholars in IR/Poli Sci in the West, so probably he is known among a small academic circle in the U.S. as well. He did not directly supervise me, so we had limited interactions, though I am sure I made good impression on him about my working abilities. Since I will state in my PoS that I hope to go back to my country and work in the media industry by hopefully having a current affair show, he can directly speak my potentials in so (more relevant). 2 Concerns. For one, not sure if he knows me WELL to write a thoughtful letter. For the other, he was in a controversy (made some nationalist/exphonebia comments) that distained his reputation among western scholars several years ago. Really appreciate your suggestions, folks!
  18. Please rank: 1). How well he/she knows you 2). Reputation in the filed 3). Relevance of His/Her expertise to the filed you intend to apply
