The April 15th deadline is part of an agreement through almost all universities offering graduate studies that you may read here: https://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGS_Resolution.pdf Basically it states that funded offers must be preserved in wait of the student's acceptance until April 15th. They have no right to pressure or force -directly- to make a decision before that date. You may also accept an offer, and then decide to cancel it and take another before the deadline. After the April 15th deadline, funded offers are not guaranteed anymore (most likely your offer is given to a waitlisted student), although some universities may provide extensions.

Beware! They are not respecting the April 15th deadline for funded decisions. Yes, it may be dressed like a secondary thing (a summer RA position), but it is a pressure as well. If you are willing to accept the offer so early because of this unfair pressure, be informed: you can cancel it later (but not after April 15th) to accept another offer without any punishment. EDIT: Basically, what I would do in your case is to accept your current best offer just to keep the RA position, and then cancel it if your #1 gives you a funded offer.

Same here. I'll be visiting UCSD on March 13-14th which most likely will be my destination university.

Please, don't take my word as an authorized opinion. However, I think that the POI situation at Yale may provide you with an excellent oportunity. Hey, Yale is a top notch university! If this guy is the best at his area and you are his first PhD student, he will do his best to introduce you to his (surely awesome) projects and teach you everything about them. You will be also under a great preassure, as your outcome will determine his 'ability' to direct PhD students in front of his peers. But overall, I think that this is a great situation. On the other hand, experienced and renowned POIs may be too tired/busy to pay the attention you will need during your studies. Wish you the best on your decision

I would advise against this. In your SoP you should try to convey an overview story of your academic story and achievements. Therefore, instead of: "I published the article 'An improved algorithm for computer chess stalemate detection' in IEEE chess transactions, and that was a major achievement in my career" You might want to say: "The research I conducted in the X lab of artificial intelligence led me to publish articles in renowned journals about how to improve chess stalemate detection that had an impact on the chess community because..." The right place to detail your actual publications is the CV/Resume. Also, some admission web applications provide a exclusive section to upload pdfs of your publications along with their metadata (name of journal/congress, date, place, authors). You can also create a webpage (I did that) for your potential advisors to visit, with all the details about your pubs there. Good luck with your application process! * EDIT: oh, you were asking about citing other people's work? That's surely a no-no. You can talk about them and how they influenced you, but in a colloquial way, without so many actual details.

I second this opinion. However, I would wait just a week more as the majority of admissions should arrive before February ends. Who knows if some university may surprise you with a crazy unusual offer. Remember that the Council of Graduate Schools establish April 15th as the soonest possible response deadline for financial offers. I've just received acceptance notification from GaTech. And this is not necessarily good news for me, I had already made my mind to go to beautiful San Diego. Oh dear, I am going to have the worst of times deciding...

Axed once again! This time by UC Berkeley. I'm starting to think that UCSD might be the final destination for me. Let's see what MIT, UIUC and GaTech have to say about that...

Just to let you know guys, I've just received an admission from UCSD! Two days after my interview with POI.

I have just been axed by CMU =) No problem, I'm already happy with my UMD admission, and things could only get better.

Hi theTB. I received my informal admission like a week ago from my POI and semi-informal from the CS Department. The semi-informal admission stated that the official one (from the Graduate School) was still to be sent: "[...] The University's Graduate School will send you official confirmation of your admission." Bear in mind that I was accepted without a previous interview, so I wouldn't lose my hope until I receive a formal notification if I were you.

Just to let you know guys, I'll be having an informal interview with POI next week. Really couldn't tell whatever that means in terms of when to expect actual decisions... (gabosan: punishing students to relieve our admissions anxiety is actually a great idea, I may do that as well =P )

I am waiting for their decision as well, or even an interview request. It seems like things are going at a slow pace there so don't lose your patience. My personal recommendation for these tense moments is to watch a tv series marathon (like 30 episodes in one day, from dusk to dawn).

Do you mean Indiana University, Bloomington? If that's the case, I already got an admission there. However, I think it was just the first wave of admissions, your response should be arriving in these weeks, I suppose.

Lol, the same here. I have received several visits from the places I have applied to and from which I haven't got any news yet. Furthermore, I have not received visits from the only university that has interviewed me... that strange. I wonder how many admission officers/faculty have also visited it with some kind of adblock that fools the Google Analytics add-on. Anyway, good luck to all of you!

I will have to disagree with you. Most universities to which you and qualthian have applied haven't even started sending out results or interviews requests (except for a few guys that may be exceptionally apt, or local undergrad students). I also noticed that several universities offer admission without an interview so that is not a factor either. And on top of it, I think the current cold wave in US is playing a role in slowing up this process. I guess that these first weeks of February will be the decisive ones, so hang on there and don't lose your hope! =)
