  1. I don't see any problem in re-entering the country from Canada. People who live in Canada already on a different visa are allowed to the enter the US with their F1, as long as they get an I-94 at the port of entry (which is free if you enter via a plane or $10 if you enter via land - not much!) I don't think there's any confirmation that it's legal anywhere, as I guess they don't really want people doing that...but it all seems legal enough to me! However if you want to follow the official advice, this is what the US Department of State site says: The only problem with that is the expense, as it said that it costs $300 to file the I-539...But hope that all helps everyone!
  2. Just found out that they give approximate wait times for requesting a visa interview & the visa processing time on the US Department of State site. Go to http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/ ... s_wait.php and you can choose your city. Helped me to stop worrying about getting my I-20 by knowing the rest of the process will be quick!
  3. I'm off to Penn State for my MA (musicology). 20hr TA, which'll cover my tuition, 80% of medical & 'atleast' $12,600 stipend:) Only downside is having to go through this process again for my PhD...but after this year, atleast i know what apps hell to expect! Loxias44 - hope you get a nice surprise soon! & hope everyone else has some good news to share?
  4. Magamago - You can enter the country 30 days before classes and I would've thought a summer language course would count as classes, especially if it's geared towards international students? Otherwise if the college is near Canada, you could always enter the US without a Visa, go to Canada for a weekend and then re-enter the country on your student visa! Hope you manage to get it sorted soon - I need mine by the end of June...
  5. Anyone heard anything from/about BU?! They're taking a while and I'm not sure if they're just being slow with rejections/waitlists or if they're actually still deciding! Also, does anyone know what their funding's like? Caus I'm sitting on a nice offer & doubting I'll get the same from them if I got in...
  6. Rejection letter from NYU arrived today, postmarked 27th & letter dated 25th. I'm guessing they were all sent out together for those of u still waiting. Ironically my mom called me with the news when I was standing outside some of NYU's buildings meeting a friend! If anyone knows how many people got accepted or any info on the accepted people (particularly if they're on here!) I'd be interested to know some details.
  7. Which state will you be in? I'm in the same boat and planning on just driving up to Canada to leave the country and then re-entering from there. Though that's only conveniant if you're in a state nearish the border (I'll be in NY)
  8. I called the NYU musicology dept and the person I spoke to said she didn't know admissions details, ie. whether I've been rejected...but letters will be sent out in the next two weeks. I'm not completely assuming rejection just yet, as there's a (tiny!) chance the people admitted last month might've declined...but I'll post on here when I get my letter, as I assume I'll get it before all of you waiting for mail to make it's way to places like Australia!
  9. I was in contact with one of the profs & interviewed etc and have heard nothing... Anyone guna phone them to ask? Please post asap if you do!
  10. I still haven't heard anything, but I think I'll call them when it gets to 'late March' (which I've decided is about a weeks time!) My worry is that they have/will mail rejections & email acceptances or they'll let the accepted ppl know a while before the rejected...and given the small number of people who get in, they won't neccesarrily be gradschoolcafe posters. I just hope the mail service is working quickly atm!
  11. Rejection from Columbia:( And judging by this evening's gradcafe results posts, the GSAS did a mass emailing today...hope some other people here got good news from them.
  12. ozmusicbird (& anyone else who's applied to NYU/Columbia!) - I posted this on the results wall, but just to repeat here, I emailed the NYU GSAS about an address change & they said the departments should be making decisions from late feb - march, and then the graduate school will send letters out by mid-late march. They stressed to me that they won't release results via phone or email, but you can call the music dept to check if you haven't heard by late March/early April (but don't call before then...) Personally, I reckon the music dept will prob email accepted students, given that there are so few. Though rejected students will then prob have to wait for mail... As for Columbia, I saw an ethnomusicology person has been accepted from here and have heard of someone else that's been accepted for musicology. I haven't heard anything, so might call later this week if still no news. Oh & I got into Penn State:) Congrats to everyone else who's been getting good news.
  13. I empathise with the long wait for mail to travel overseas! Although I think it means the admissions people don't mind quite so much if you call them, and some will make an effort to then email you a copy of what they mail. NYU says mid-march on the GSAS website, but some other people from that school have already heard and been offered McCracken fellowships... Good luck!
  14. Hi, I'm the one who was asking about Penn State, thanks for filling me in on what's happening with you - I'm still waiting to hear from them...If they're not letting you know about funding til April/May, does that mean they're not following the April 15th deadline for letting them know if you're going to go there?! I thought all colleges had that deadline, so people can compare offers? To everyone else out there, has anyone heard from NYU or Columbia for Musicology (or any music program!)? And do those colleges normally email decisions? It seemed that way for Columbia for other programs.
