  1. SEG is overcrowded, 45 student all squeezed in an old classroom. some professors are good, some just can't teach. Stanford definitely doesn't put enough emphasis in the structural program. other science and engineering fields however are loaded with fundings.

  2. does CEE285A open in autumn quarter?

I believe it is, it's available on axess, even has the time slot and room scheduled.

@Timebarrier, I do believe it's first come first serve basis, but on axess they show 999 available seats, I say there's no way you won't get to sign up for the classes you want, especially if it's a 200 level graduate course.

  3. How is everyone's summer coming along? Enrollment opened today, I haven't spoken with an advisor yet... but I'm gonna sign up for some classes anyways. Just wondering if anyone else is doing the same, if so what classes? mines are

CEE 280 - Advanced Structural Analysis

CEE 201D - Computations in Civil and Environmental Engineering

CEE 285A - Advanced Structural Concrete Behavior and Design

CEE 285B - Advanced Structural Steel Behavior and Design

what do they mean when axess says a class is 3-4 units? is it 3 or 4 units? That will have major implications on my tuition costs.

  4. hi all

I am UC Berkeley undergrad in Mechanical engineering with overall GPA 3.0

I have 1 and half yrs of national lab experience and one in progress research paper.

The graduate school I would like to apply are UCSD, UCI, purdue, Princeton ,Cornell, Uni of Michigan, Texas Austin.

I don't whether I should apply MS or PhD in the graduate school.

which one of school or MS or PhD that I have much more opportunity to get in

    Thanks

Apply for PhD, even if you only want a masters. It helps your admission and funding chances. You can always bail out of the PhD program later.

  5. I'm moving in on the 11th too!

Is anyone planning on finishing all 45 units in three quarters? I did not get funds, and I plan on working part time to help out with school. I don't know what's reasonable number of classes to take.

On a side note, I got 3 job offers this past week, the constrution industry is picking up, and Stanford opens great doors.

  6. Did you receive an email or snail mail regarding funding? When did you receive it?

Have you applied for Escondido housing in the lottery or have you already been assigned Escondido?

I received it via snail mail, the letter was dated May 4th. It said "available fellowships and assistantships have been accepted by applicants in the first round of financial aid offers." I guess there's no money for "2nd rounders". Since I don't get funding, I do plan on getting a part time job, or take more classes.

I sent in the application for housing. My friend has priority so I will get exempted from lottery and just room with him.

On a side note, I applied to 50 internships for the summer using the Stanford email, and nothing. Although firms are more courteous and they reply to your inquiry lol. Alot of engineers told me things are likely to stay this way for 2-3 more years. What's a good plan B other than going for a PhD (god forsake if they don't fund some PhD students)?

  7. I didn't know they use a GPA cut-off... 3.9 sounds extremely competitive.

I received a letter from Prof Law saying I won't get any funding. For those who got funding, how many classes were you planning to take per quarter? Also I'll be living in Escondido housing with a friend, moving in Sept 11th. I hope things are going well for everyone else.

  8. I tip for every one... star filling up the health forms... it has tons of information to recolect...

    best!

anyone got information on domestic student orientation? I guess I'll go along with the international orientation week haha. what is this health form you speak of Rich? is it to apply for the health insurance? They told me to get an ID card the first week of school. I'm going to live off campus, near the campus, my girlfriend is moving in with me, and we only have 1 car.

  9. I just came back from the department, and I talked to Prof Law. he said the department admitted about 35 MS students out of 200 something. He said the department doesn't get a lot of funding, students will have to be resourceful. At this point, they're waiting for other students to accept/decline offers, and then evaluate to see who else gets funding. I think my chance of getting funding is small. He told me to make sure and attend the orientation day, anyone has any information on that? time and location?

There's a Stanford thread under "meet and greet" or "city guide" forums, they said Menlo park and Mountain View has cheaper apartments, and very bikable to Stanford. on a side note, Stanford student body is quite active, quite alot of stuff goes on in campus.

  10. Unfortunately my admission letter just says that I am admitted to DCI and am invited to the visitation day on 19 March. It does not carry any kind of University Id or attachment. I find it really hard to believe that Stanford completely forgot me after sending the offer letter.

Email Ms. Vonner or Ms. Sampson, or Prof Law and ask for your university ID number... I think the only structural admit that went to the visitation day was TheFish, you can try messaging her to see if she made any contacts with other DCI admits.

  11. Hi there,

my admission was quite late and my University ID is not yet recognized by the system. Does anyone of you know how long it takes ? (I'm quite impatient to accept my offer of admission).

Anyway, what program did you apply to ?

It took 24 hours for me to create a SUNetID, and it took another 6-8 hours before the accept admission link showed up on the website. I would wait maybe 1 day and try your student ID again(remember if it's not 8 digits you need to put a 0 in front of your ID number). If it still fails, there's a stanford help link, you can submit a ticket and an IT tech will help you.

  12. What are the next steps after accepting the offer?

    @s1u8n

    Have you received financial decision?

They told me that I may receive it only after the 15th.....

Tim, anyone I talked to or emailed about funding either doesn't reply, or is of no help. I don't know what's the next step after accepting the admission, I think there is a patent agreement on axess that you can sign electronically, and if you're US resident you have to fill out a form to get student loans. there's also a "to-do list" on the right side of axess, if it's empty you should be good...

  13. Hello everyone.

I received my admit in Design Construction Integration program more than 1 months ago via snail mail. Since then I hav'nt received any communication from Stanford via email or anything. Can any one please tell me how do we accept the admission offer? Also how come funding decisions are taking that long?

No one is replying to the mails and when I called the secretary she told that she does not know when the financial aid decisions will be made. So I don't understand what to do next?

I received an attachment along with my admission letter that tells me exactly how to accept an offer. this website also shows you step by step instruction on how to accept the offer.

    http://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/gradadmissions/admitted/offer

you need your student ID in order to create a SUNetID and accept the offer.

I'm still waiting on funding decisions as well... I heard Stanford is rich, hopefully they can fund most of the students.
