  1. When this process started I was really just hoping for 1 "yes." Now I have choices between legitimately great programs. I'm pretty stunned really.

    Congrats!

  2. I am under the impression that Madison does the inhumane, ruthless impersonal "check the website" thing...but I could be wrong. But I think they meant they will finally reach a consensus by the end of this week?

On the same note, UW Madison's History of Science just submitted its first batch of fellowship nomination.

  3. Alright, I now have another Skype "chat"/interview request thanks to that email. After fumbling through the first one, hopefully I do not screw up this one.  I was so nervous and unprepared when they asked me if I have any questions for the program. My mind went totally blank at that moment.

I do wonder about contacting ad com and submitting new material after the deadline. I think by now it is too late to do anything, but I kept wondering if I should've sent in my better writing sample...

  4. I'd email the POI with something to the effect of, "Professor X spoke to me and encouraged me to contact you about my interest..."

And than give two or three paragraphs about your interest in that specific program.

Thanks a lot for that opening...My brain isn't functioning at 3 am, and thanks for helping me getting this out of the door. I shall keep you guys updated.

  5. That's bizarre.  Although, I had a similar situation in which a POI/adcomm member contacted my advisor to ask how serious I was about their program.  Of course I'm serious; I applied, didn't I?!

My advisor and I discussed it briefly (deciding on a reassuring though noncommittal response), and s/he responded on my behalf.  In this case, I would talk to your recommender.  Did the POI say that you should reach out to the school (I agree with you, it seems late to do so)?  Or does the POI simply want an assurance from your recommender?  Get clarification.

Hello jamc8383, many thanks for the response. My advisor doesn't seem to care, and just instructed me to email the POI again. Argh.

  6. I just received an email from my recommender telling me to contact a POI of an institution I've applied to. She told me that the department is considering my application very seriously, but they aren't sure of my interest because I never sent a letter of inquiry. Well, the reason why I didn't send any was because I thought it's too late (December) to properly express interest, and isn't it worse to send something now? What am I supposed to say?

  7. I missed the Chicago deadline. Or I am not even sure how I missed it, because I was submitting before 11:50 CT! I took some screenshots and emailed the Division of Social Sciences, and hopefully I will hear from them soon.

  8. Recommendation questions--

I realised that my first deadline is coming up on Dec 3rd (Stanford), but I doubt my professors are ready. Can they send the recs in later? Stanford states that it is a "hard" deadline. What should I do?

    Thanks!
