  1. Most of the info you are going to want and need will be found on department websites. You should have a concentration or specific areas of research that fascinate you. Compare your own interests to department specializations. To get a list of schools offering SOCY grad programs and where they "rank," you can check out U.S. News rankings here: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/sociology-rankings This site will give you a list of the most well-known schools and their ranking through the top 94 programs, as well as unranked programs.
  2. Hey guys, So, I recently took the GRE with the intention of applying to sociology Ph.D. programs. My verbal score was okay, 161 (87th percentile), but my quant score was rather low, 150 (40th percentile). Combined, that is a 311. On the old scale, that is a V: 620 and Q: 630, or combined 1250. I am quite worried about my quant score. I am a master's student with a 4.0 graduate GPA, and a 3.7 undergraduate GPA (4.0 major). Moreover, I have received straight A's in both of my graduate statistics classes, as well as my research methods classes. I am fluent in SPSS, and I have the ability to conduct statistical research. Thus, I don't feel like my quant score is an adequate representation of my abilities. Funny thing is, my quant score dropped by 1 point (from 151) from the last time I took the GRE. Bizarre. I am most interested in conducting comparative-historical and ethnographic research, thus, qualitative. So will my quant score be less important? I will also have 3 very strong LORs. In addition, I have a book chapter under review, and will be working with two of my professors on a review article for a sociology journal. The schools I am applying to include: 1. NYU (top choice) 2. Johns Hopkins (also top choice) 3. CUNY 4. University of Maryland, College Park 5. University of Massachusetts, Amherst 6. The New School 7. University of Texas, Austin 8. George Mason University (safety pick) Any insight is greatly appreciated.
  3. Thank you so much for your comments! I really do appreciate it. I do think you make a strong case; I will be able to place an assistantship on my CV, along with a new degree. Indeed, there never is a guarantee of getting into a Ph.D. program, and you raise a good point regarding what might ultimately be a $90,000.00 wager. Leaning toward the funding!
  4. Hi all, I'll do my best to keep this as brief as possible. I have been admitted to my dream school, NYU, for the Masters of Political Science. I have also been accepted, with full funding, to my safety school, which also happens to be my undergraduate university (Virginia Commonwealth University), for an M.S. in Sociology. I was denied to the fully funded Ph.D. program I applied to. NYU will leave me with ~$90,000.00 worth of student loan debt. However, it is #15 overall for Political Science, and as my goal is ultimately the Ph.D., I believe that NYU's reputation and rigorous program will assist me in getting into a strong doctorate. However, the debt terrifies me (I am not a wealthy man). Although I have been given an assistantship with a full tuition waiver at VCU, I am concerned that this degree might prevent me from getting into a top Ph.D. as it is not a well-known or highly recognized program (I can't find any rankings). It also is in a different discipline, sociology (my school does not offer anything above a B.A. for political science). Perhaps I just hold off this year altogether and reapply in the fall? I have strong credentials which include a 4.0 major GPA, 3.76 cumulative GPA, a research conference presentation, and a few internships. Would it be wise to reapply to a much larger swath of schools, including several more Ph.D's, and see if I can nail down a funded program? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
  5. Hello all, I am posting regarding the UC Santa Cruz political science writing sample component. The department website says that applicants are to submit "The abstract of a scholarly written work (1200-1500 words) should represent the applicant’s best research and capacity to engage in scholarly inquiry..etc...etc." Perhaps I'm a total moron, but are they seriously only asking only for a summary of a larger work? Do you think they are looking for an excerpt from a research paper? They ask that I have the whole paper ready to be submitted electronically if requested. I am hesitant to contact the department as I don't want to come off as a total idiot. But I also don't want to submit my application incorrectly. Any insight is much appreciated!
