  1. Don't read it! It will scar you for life.
  2. This is the scariest thing I've read all week. *crisis of confidence*
  3. A prospie calling someone a snowflake? PSJR much?
  4. My question was more along the lines of this. One area of math not mentioned above is differential equations, which are used in dynamic systems, typically in macroecon and IPE. What are the applications of real analysis and topology?
  5. could you explain which math topics are more applicable to what subfields?
  6. However, if you need advice on the immediate future and are willing to consider doing something else, I wait until scholarship decisions are out. If you get partial funding (enough to make it reasonably affordable, I'd say 50%) to do the MPhil, go for it. Otherwise reconsider. If you're paying big bucks, you should get your money's worth.
  7. Since you've already decided on your immediate path (MPhil), there's not much that would be different whether you intend to remain at Oxford or choose a US program, which is a decision 2 years away. In either case you would still have to do well in coursework, get good letters etc, and (assuming that you'll apply everywhere anyway) your eventual decision would be contingent on where you get accepted.
  8. If you're willing to self-finance a masters program AND you're unsure about getting funding from Oxford for DPhil later, why Oxford MPhil now and not any of the usual US phd feeder programs like MAPSS, QMSS etc (or some policy masters) which could also get you a job?
  9. Is funding an issue? UK programs don't typically offer funding.
  10. Purely in terms of admissions, I think methods would be better. The gtown program *may* shape your research agenda, give you new ideas, but otherwise the effect should be marginal. That said, in terms of life experiences, trying different things, and figuring out if you really want to be an academic or a practitioner... the gtown program sounds more promising on that end. Or, you could hedge your bets and just do both. Max out on math and stats, and spend time on the hill.
  11. I defer to your collective expertise on this... Are there *any* EAS MA programs (MARSEA, RSEA et al) that offer funding (tuition waiver, grad assistantship etc)?
  12. Q: Does QMSS offer any kind of dept funding (tuition remission, grad assistantship)? May be a cash cow, but I'm all outta milk... *moo*
