Stat Assistant Professor replied to cyprusprior's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
Nothing for me yet. Hopefully I will hear something this week. I imagine they would send all their acceptances by the end of this week, as their spring break is next week and they do have a visit day in March, but I could be wrong. I plan to e-mail again on Thursday if I haven't heard back by then. -
Columbia MA Statistics Review?
Stat Assistant Professor replied to ParanoidAndroid's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
That's a good point. For Master's degrees, one should definitely take finances into consideration, in addition to job placement. For instance, if I lived in Ohio and I wanted to get a Master's in Stats, I would certainly go to OSU. Judging from their site, they do pretty well at placing MS alumni in industry jobs, whereas there is no such information on the Columbia website. So going to a flagship state school isn't a bad idea if you want to save money (assuming the dept has good industry placement). Additionally, it's not a bad idea to look into programs that offer funding for Master's students too. The school where I obtained my Master's degree funded all of its Stats MS students with teaching assistantships, so none of them had to pay any tuition and got a small 9-month stipend of 11k. The MS alumni also got pretty decent jobs too, especially the ones who had done summer internships in between their first and second year. My Master's institution had nowhere near hte name brand of Columbia either, but it seemed like it still paid off for the MS alumni. -

Me. I have received no e-mail nor has the status on the website been changed (it still says "Submitted"). As for UCLA, it still says "Submitted-Pending Decision" for me. I contacted the stats graduate student services admin at Berkeley to be put out of my misery but I have not received any response. -
Columbia MA Statistics Review?

IMHO, the main benefit of going to a name brand school is the connections you will make there. Most of these schools are very well-connected to industry, and some industries like to hire strictly from "top schools" (e.g. management consulting, investment banking). However, it is certainly not necessary to go to a top school if you want to get a job in industry. You should look for job placement data to see where recent graduates end up. If it is not available, then you should definitely ask the department to send you it. Any dept that does not provide this info readily should serve as a red flag. -

Looks like UCLA sent out acceptances. Judging from past results, this does not appear to be a school that sends out waves of acceptances, but one that keeps a long waitlist in case not enough people accept offers. Heard nothing from them. I will probably reach out at the end of the month just to see where I stand. -

Nothing from Rice for me. I e-mailed the dept to ask on Friday. -

Here is another question... has anyone accepted offers yet and/or planned to accept them before (or without even) attending visit days? I see some people using phrases "dream school" on the results page. -

That's great, CauchyProcess. Congrats! 23.4k is a lot better than a LOT of public universities. Outside of a few big name public universities and/or universities in very expensive cities (i.e. Los Angeles or NYC), most annual stipends for are under $20k. -

I haven't heard anything from Berkeley. I contacted the Graduate Student Services Advisor but I have not received any response. I'd rather receive an explicit rejection than an implicit one. Hopefully I'll get a response soon -

Thanks. I think I've checked out this site before. But many depts send out informal acceptances before official letters from the grad school or before the website is updated, so I was still a bit curious. I'm sure some people will post UCLA results here if they hear back though. -

Still nothing from Berkeley for me and no change of status on the website either. I have e-mailed them so I can get a definitive response. Has anyone else NOT heard anything from Berkeley? I also take it no one has heard anything from UCLA? Congrats on your acceptance, Lelouch Lamperouge! -

Ah, thanks. I was over 99 percent sure I was rejected. I will probably receive the rejection today or next Monday at the latest. -

Still nothing from Berkeley. Strange... To the person who is waitlisted at Berkeley: how were you notified of this? Did you contact the dept to find out? Thanks -

Still nothing from Berkeley for me. Maybe I'll get a firm rejection by tomorrow though, LOL. I am still waiting for Rice, UConn, UNC-Chapel Hill, Berkeley, and UCLA. Nothing from UCLA, anyone? It seems they have had visitation days in the past (the second week of March). -

I have not heard anything from Berkeley. It seems safe to assume that I was rejected, but in the slight chance I was waitlisted... did you guys log onto the gradadmit website for UCB and see that your status had been changed? It still says "Submitted" for me. Thanks. -

statdreamgirl, I have not heard from Rice. I was told in the interview with them (exactly 2 weeks ago) that I should hear back within 1-2 weeks. If I have not heard back by tomorrow, I will send them an e-mail. -

True dat. Frankly, given the current situation, I don't think anyone should feel that bad about getting rejections (especially since the popularity of stats has grown in recent years, and a lot of "sexy" careers like data scientist are being touted so the number of grad applications for statistics depts has spiked). It's just so competitive right now, and funding at public universities is scarce. Even 2nd tier schools are taking less than 10 percent of applicants (some of these may take a greater number of unfunded students, but no funding for a PhD is just as bad -- or worse -- than a rejection). I myself have 5 years of industry experience in various sectors, so I'm fairly used to rejection from the job hunt (the number of which is in the hundreds). Just the way it is. -

Maybe it was under 10%, I don't know. I would not be surprised if it was around 6% or lower. Looking at the admissions data (when provided) on schools' websites isn't always useful for statistics, because it typically includes Master's students too, which skews the acceptance percentage reported up. (e.g. Columbia accepts over 50% of those who apply to their Stats MA, but I imagine it's less than 10% for the PhD). Even at "lower ranked" schools, the acceptance rates for PhD students are low, because of funding issues. As I previously mentioned, my Master's institution (a 2nd tier school) can only admit two or three funded PhD students in statistics every year, so the waitlist is very long but the actual acceptance rate is certainly in the single percentages. -
I think it is likely I would have a better acceptance record if I had applied to biostats programs, but I wasn't sure I wanted to specialize in biostatistics so I just applied to pure stats programs. I was hoping that my grades in upper division math classes and my MS degree in applied math would be able to compensate for the undergrad GPA, but alas, it did not. That's okay though, you ultimately only choose one school to attend, so I'm happy with UF so far. In retrospect, I should have applied to more schools in the range of rankings of UF (and schools below that), with perhaps Purdue and CMU being my "reaches" instead of anywhere UMich or higher.

Michigan was a tough one to crack this year. I think the e-mail said less than 6 percent acceptance rate. I perhaps should not have even bothered with this one. I think I should be receiving my Berkeley rejection this week or early next week. UCLA should be releasing some results this week too, methinks. Hopefully I am still being considered for Rice and UNC-Chapel Hill's next round of acceptances. -

What a douche. Unfortunately this kind of entitlement/sexism is not uncommon in STEM fields (i.e. bitter males thinking they are the bomb and blaming women when they are rejected). -
Thanks for the tip, wine in coffee cups. I have updated my signature. It would still be pretty neat if other people could post their stats, so we could see what the competition was like this year. Don't be shy, folks. I guarantee everyone here that my undergraduate GPA will be amongst the lowest in this very strong applicant pool. I was a bit of a "late bloomer" though (due to some personal issues and immaturity at the time, I did not perform well until later on in my college career and in my post-college career when I started to take math classes as a non-degree student). Luckily two adcoms were able to see past the undergrad GPA.

I just logged onto the Minnesota website and the decision was available, and I was rejected. Just as an fyi to anyone waiting to hear from UMN, you may be able to see your decision on the applyyourself site. Congrats to those who got in! -
Co-sign, mittsmitten895. effhorses definitely sounds like an impressive candiate. I thought my own profile was relatively unimpressive compared to most people's (my undergrad GPA is undoubtedly lower than a lot of applicants), so i was hoping that this would not discourage people from posting their stats... though obviously, there are problems with trying to gather data like this to begin with. I would not be surpirsed if UF is the only school I am admitted to. Haha.
