Stat Assistant Professor replied to cyprusprior's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
statisticsfall2014, I think some schools do that... maybe not the top tier places (I think in that case, they just have waitlist and rejections after first round acceptances), but definitely some schools right below that. I myself am not taking any chances on my end though. I already submitted new applications to a few places with Feb. deadlines. I presume I will not get into any of the top tier places. If I had gotten into a top 15 school, I would have given much more serious focus on pursuing an academic career, but now, I'm more open to industry too where prestige of the institution doesn't matter as much. -

Did anyone else hear back from Minnesota? This was one of my top choices and one of the schools I thought was a little bit more within reach (but given the competition this year, definitely not a sure bet). Please let us know if the letter was personalized or a rather generic one sent by the department head. Thanks. -

Hi StatPhD2014, The non-degree classes were not at the same Ivy League school. I took them at several different schools in the area where I was working at the time (I was working in finance at the time I took them). Only one of these schools was one that might not be recognizable at all to adcoms. The Master's school is top 70 for math, according to U.S. News. It is not a T1 school for math, but I thought it was a good program. I took undergrad analysis as part of my grad program here. I took the grad level probability/statistics sequence and PhD level classes in applied math and statistics that other PhD students took. Maybe prestige does matter a lot though... had I taken the classes at more top tier schools and/or gotten my Master's at a higher-ranked school and did similarly well, maybe my chances would have been better. I don't really have any idea, that's why I was curious if cyberwulf (or anyone else) can give some idea. Thanks! (Also, it's possible my letters of recommendation weren't as strong too. I don't discard that possibility) -

Additionally, I echo what others above me have said. I thank you very much for your helpful comments. Much appreciated! -

cyberwulf, Just a few questions... 1) to what extent do grades in non-advanced math/stat classes matter? My undergrad major was not in math or statistics and it was good but not excellent (3.5ish overall, just under 3.7 in major). I only took through linear algebra and Calc III in undergrad. However, I later took upper division math classes as a non-degree student in order to gain admission for a Master's program in Applied Math. I did well in all of these math/stat classes (I ended up taking 19 math/stat classes total from these non-degree classes, plus grad level courses in graduate school). So if you look at only my record in math and stat, the grades were all A- or higher. 2) to what extent can a stellar Master's record make up for an undergrad record? Again, my undergrad wasn't *very* weak but perhaps not the most outstanding (however, it was from an Ivy League school that is known for rigorous grading, not grade inflation). But my Master's grades were really good. However, I am not sure how impressive this is, given the different grading scale and grade inflation in grad school. Just curious if you could offer some insight. Thanks! -

Congrats. I'm a bit nervous now, as I did not receive e-mails from Harvard (was a stretch) or Michigan (slightly better chance here)... I will try to remain optimistic though, lol. C'mon Minnesota, UCLA, and/or UNC-Chapel Hill! -

Looks as though Michigan sent out several rounds of acceptances last year, so I'm still somewhat hopeful about this one. But it's so competitive, and I honestly have no idea how I will fare compred to others -

Looks like Michigan has sent out a few acceptance letters for statistics. Congrats to those who got in! I haven't gotten an e-mail yet. :-/ Could any of those who were admitted let us know if the e-mails you received were 'personal' or rather generic congratulations letters? -

Sorry to hear that, Funkoverload. Hope you do get in somewhere though (if you haven't already)! Statisticsfall2014, University of Connecticut also has a Feb. 1 deadline, so you could consider applying there too. I don't think I will personally, but just a heads up this is another place with a Feb. 1 deadline. -

statisticsfall2014, I e-mailed my LOR writers a few days ago telling them that they should expect to receive new e-mails to submit new letters of recommendation. So they know they have to submit the LORs this weekend or early next week. Even then, I don't think submitting rec letters a few days late is a big problem, as long as the core application is done. I checked the results pages for these schools, and it seems they make decisions by March, so there's plenty of time. I have to mail my GREs and official transcripts to some of these places. I think there is definitely some flexibility, since the departments actually have to put together folders for all the applicants, and there are plenty who don't submit the actual online application till Feb. 1. I think we have some leeway, as not all the required documents might arrive by the stated deadline. -

I got rejected too. Was a bit of a reach. Submitting new applications for schools with later deadlines now. - Ray -

Does anyone know if UW is sending a second round of acceptances, or is the second "round" just going to be waitlist or rejection? -

FWIW, I also never heard back from UW (acceptance or rejection). I e-mailed their graduate admissions committee to inquire about my status, but they didn't get back to me... so I infer I'm being considered for their waitlist still, but who knows. Has anyone heard back from UW about waitlist? -

ihatepencils, Most pure (and applied) math applicants hang out over at mathematicsgre.com instead of The Grad Cafe, it seems. You can check out admissions results there. -

statisticsfall2014, I did a quick search and I see Iowa has a deadline of Feb. 15. Oregon State has Feb. 1 deadline too. I think I might submit apps for Iowa, Oregon State, and Florida. I wouldn't worry about hassling the LOR writers. If they already wrote the LORs, it should only take a short while to resubmit them. -

statisticsfall2014, I'm starting to have the same worries myself. It's still a little bit early, but the thought has definitely crossed my mind, and I wonder if it's worth it to apply to any schools with later deadlines for fall 2014 at this point. I applied to 11 schools but I wonder if my list was too 'top-heavy.' Haha. -

Judging from the results page, all the admits received the e-mail at the same time, so if I didn't get an e-mail, I am (most likely) either waitlisted or rejected. I think I will pass on contacting any depts, unless I have not heard definitive rejection, waitlist, or acceptance by late Feb., but if anyone DOES decide to contact them, be sure to let us know what they said! Thanks! -

probofstats, I think you may be thinking of the Master's acceptances. I would assume that the PhD applicants would hear back much sooner. Judging from past result postings, acceptances and rejections should all be mailed out by mid-Feb. I'm not certain if all PhD acceptance letters go out at the same time. I'd think so, but maybe not? -

Congrats! I haven't received any e-mail, but I'd be quite shocked if I did, honestly, since Harvard was definitely a long shot for me. Harvard will definitely give you full support. Treat yo'self tonight! -

Congrats effhorses! Did you receive a personal e-mail from a professor or an e-mail to check a website from the Graduate School? Just curious. -

Got a rejection e-mail from Duke, so I assume that they are sending out rejections now. Good luck to those getting interviews! -

Didn't apply to Penn, but congrats to anyone who was admitted! Did anyone else follow up with Washington? I'm debating if I should, but if I have not heard anything at this point, I assume it means I am being considered for the waitlist, and if I don't make the cut for that, I'll receive a rejection letter shortly thereafter. So I might just wait a week or so longer and hear what they say
