I was actually quite surprised to be accepted to ND. To answer your question: maybe it had a very small incoming class last year and wants to make up for it this year. But I really have no idea.
-
Haha. Deal.

Wait listed at Virginia! I'll probably take myself off of the wait list next week. zizeksucks, that gives you a better chance of admission. Congratulations and good luck!
-
Thanks, everyone! I'm very happy.
-
lol. Yep. Got the exact same email.

I was just admitted to Notre Dame! So pumped! Sean Kelsey told me (via email) that I was admitted and wants to schedule a time to chat on the phone about my support package and the possibility of a campus visit. Splendid!!!

This is basically right. If you peruse the placement records of some top-25 programs, the vast majority of PhDs place at schools that do not make the PGR. Indeed, many, perhaps still the vast majority, place at schools that do not have graduate programs in philosophy. Bottom line: Even if you get into NYU or Oxford, don't assume you'll get hired at a top-25 or even a top-50 school. In fact, you may not even get a research position or, as maxhgns notes, a TT job.

Dear Indiana, Penn, and Notre Dame, Please release acceptances and wait list notifications. Thank you, Interested applicant
-
"Probable: All of them." lol. Have hope! A number of the schools you've applied to haven't yet released any notifications of any kind.
-
Well, some schools do send out rejections in waves (e.g., UNC).
-
Far, far more than those have sent out acceptances. See ianfaircloud's blog for the latest information. Or just check the results page for philosophy. Also, unless you've been accepted or wait listed at school S, you'll never know for certain at this point in the process whether S has sent out all its acceptances and wait lists. At best, you'll know that it's sent out one or more, sometimes many more. Still, you can draw reasonable inferences about how many acceptances/wait lists are outstanding.

It's a shame this thread was overwhelmed by a visceral debate that is the subject of another thread. Don't see the point in that. I thought I'd add another recommendation for philosophe. Have you heard of MAP (Minorities and Philosophy)? Here's the website. http://www.mapforthegap.com/ There are graduate student and faculty mentors willing to discuss climate issues for women, people of color, etc. at a variety of departments. I don't think Rochester is represented. However, I bet these people could tell what to ask of people at Rochester, what is and is not relevant when it comes to determining how hospitable a particular climate is for women, for example. Just a thought. -
I wonder what the deal is with UPenn ...

I agree with you about UCSD and Madison. What do you (and others) think about Berkeley? Your blog indicates that acceptances and wait lists have gone out. If someone hasn't received any word at all, should (s)he assume rejection just as (s)he should assume rejection in the UCSD case?
-
Thanks! I sincerely hope things work out for you! I'm keen on anonymity (notwithstanding my profile name ), so I don't want to go into detail about my writing sample. Sorry! I'm no fun, I know ...

Thx!

I was wait listed at Yale! Wow. Wow. Wow. Speechless. Very kind email from Shelly Kagan. Wasn't too personal (e.g., he didn't reference any specifics about my application in particular), but it was fairly lengthy and very thoughtful. Hope I get off the wait list!
-
I really hate that I always get an email from a school at least a few days after other people get an email from that school. Distresses me.
-
No idea. Hope not. I also don't understand how it's possible to conduct admissions without a wait list. If there are a bunch of offers declined, does UCSD just cope with an incoming cohort that's smaller than desired? I assume not. It probably has an "internal wait list" but doesn't notify anyone on the list until it is possible to offer him/her admission due to an accepted student's decision to decline a previous offer. That's gotta be how it works.
-
Good advice. Will do.

What is the protocol for contacting departments after they have wait listed you? I was wait listed at Arizona and don't know whether I should respond (to say thanks) or not to say anything at all until I accept or refect the offer (provided I get off the wait list eventually).

Some commentators don't regard Hume as much of a skeptic about anything. I think he's a realist with respect to causation, the external world, and personal identity. Also, it's been established conclusively that he's not an inductive skeptic. He's certainly a skeptic in some sense, but it's not at all obvious in what sense that is. Also, how does Husserl pretend to distinguish Hume's genuis from his philosophy? What was Husserl reading that gave him such a high opinion of Hume's intellect? His history, his essays on chastity?

Does anyone know if UVA and Wisconsin-Madison have sent out wait list notifications? Also, is it true that UCSD doesn't use a wait list? Insane.
