It's refreshing to hear some successful applicants echoing the refrain that fit matters. I'd imagine that if you've been admitted somewhere and you're an unkind person, you might have a twisted incentive to downplay the importance of fit in order to make unsuccessful applicants feel like their rejections are exclusively due to their own stupidity.
-
Like you, some of the programs to which I applied are not great fits for me and others, I think, are. But I don't regret applying to some of the "non-fit" programs, basically for the reason you yourself mention: one can acquire new interests and strengthen previously minor interests, especially when one is surrounded by excellent faculty and fellow grad students.

Well, just rejected from UNC. Didn't think I was a spectacular fit there, so whatever.
-
What causes you to believe that?
-
Yep. Not sure why I responded "True, true."
-
I would stage a Marxist revolution. But in all seriousness, I would apply again next time and probably continue to work at the small corner store near my house for another year (only because I doubt I'd be able to find other, more "cerebral," work). Thanks, philosophy major.

True, true. Boy, isn't this a fun process?
-
Seriously? I bet I'm just never going to get any e-mails. But congrats to those admitted!
-
You may be referring to Coggy. (S)he has been voting you down because (s)he disagrees with you about the whole Colorado, Boulder thing, I imagine. I also use the vote-down tool to indicate that I disagree with something, find it distasteful, needlessly argumentative, unproductive, etc. ... But I don't think anyone should really care about one's "reputation" on a site like this. It's basically irrelevant.
-
No, it's not reasonable.
-
Huh. I didn't receive any e-mail from UNC, not an acceptance, rejection, or wait list. Peculiar. ... (I'll probably be rejected tomorrow.)
-
I'm with MattDest. I agree with ianfaircloud that our default assumption should be that results submissions on Grad Cafe are truthful, but a phone call on Sunday is, indeed, odd.
-
It's almost Monday! Maybe we'll hear results! :) Lord in heaven, please let this happen.

dfindley has been banned from Grad Cafe. Everyone knows he's a complete failure.
-
Or at least, they have not made it known -- as far as we know ...
-
I'm not applying to USC. You're not alone!
-
This whole thing is an excellent description of what I do on a daily basis (even the City Guide forum part).
-
Randomly?! That's absurd. Can they be changed?
-
What's with these quotas of positive (and, I assume, negative) votes? My quota is like 2. Haha. But this actually frustrates me. I should probably voice this concern to an administrator ...
-
The Vineyard, which schools do you infer have rejected you, if you don't mind my asking? And what's the basis for the inference? (I apologize if you already commented on this in another thread.)
-
And I thought dfindley was bad. At least he knew that he contributed nothing to the discussion.

What did you do for your Letter Writers?

My handwriting is disgraceful, so handwritten notes are out of the running for me. -

Blaise Pascal. Thoughts is terrifying -- terrifyingly good and, literally, terrifying. -

One of my choices was "other." To specify: the history of early modern (both 17th and 18th centuries, but especially 18th). My profile name is DHumeDominates for a reason!
