  1. Hello, I am interested in getting feedback from the forum on the viability of my possible application to the BU LEAP program this Janaury for the Fall 2013 semester. See below: I am a 26 year old man living in eastern Connecticut. I am a college graduate, from University of Connecticut, Economics (2009). I also was accepted into the MA in Economics program at Uconn in 2009 after completing my undergraduate but left voluntarily before the end of the first semester because I was unhappy with my performance on some exams, losing interest in the field, etc. Since leaving college I have been employed in a variety of low to intermediate skill capacities, primarily in the manufacturing sector. I am interested in mechanical systems and problem solving and desire to enter higher skilled work in the manufacturing process / product engineering areas. I would like to major in either materials science or mechanical engineering. During my undergraduate at Uconn I took Calculus I (I believe I got a C+ during my freshman year in 2005) and some courses in statistics and econometrics. My overall undergraduate GPA was 3.24/4.00. I felt that my mathematics proficiency should be better developed / demonstrated before applying to an engineering program. So this fall, 2013, I completed Netmath 231 from the University of Illinois, equivalent to Calculus II. This lessons and homework in this course are based around Mathematica notebooks but the exams are traditional pen and paper tests. I received an A in the course and favourable feedback from my U of I mentors. This winter, starting within a week or two, I am planning on taking, self-paced Netmath 241 from U of I. This is equivalent to Calculus III or vector calculus. I took the GRE in the summer of 2009, after graduating college, and did reasonably well scoring 720Q / 700V and near perfect in the written argument section. I do not have any undergraduate debt. I am potentially interested in applying to the LEAP program at BU for fall of 2014, probably in either materials science or mechanical subdisciplines. I understand the application deadline is January 15th, 2014. I am writing this email to attempt to gauge the likelihood of my application's success given the information I have shared. An area I have some concern about is getting two good letters of recommendation since I have been out of school for a number of years. I could possibly get letters from my Netmath mentors at the University of Illinois. I am not sure how strong these would be, because I only knew them from an online, self-paced course, although I did make a favourable impression. Please feel free to provide me any feedback that you think will be useful in my decision process of whether to apply to a LEAP program before January 15th given my circumstances. I wrote that email to the BU ENG grad. admissions office. They replied asking me to call them but I was also interested in hearing some feedback from other's interested in LEAP who are using the gradcafe forum. Thanks...
