  1. I am interviewing with them Mon/Tuesday. They still haven't given me any information about lodging (and I am coming from San Diego). I also know a few students there and they all say their grad office is rather unorganized, which might contribute to delayed responses.  They were also looking at apps in waves.. so I don't know.

I'll be there also. I'm coming from California too (Los Angeles). I was also confused about lodging since I didn't get a reply from the email I sent by the deadline. I emailed the admin and she said they had me down for lodging and that the hotel contact info was on the schedule that was sent out. I guess we show up at the hotel and check-in? Still not sure how it works. Nonetheless I'm really excited! I've been counting down the days, it's my dream school!

oh! good luck! Find out if there are more interviews after you.

I believe there are two more interviews sessions after this. I received my invite about a month before the interview.

  2. what? if you are at UCLA then just go ask lol!!!!

Not everyone is easy to approach, thought I'd ask in a friendlier environment before putting myself in that position.

CDB (just changed the department name from MCDB to CDB) department already started sending the interview if you checked it on results section. They are still reviewing.

I noticed that, everyone still says MCDB. I just go with the flow. Good to know that there is still some hope left.

I'm also an ACCESS applicant.  I picked Immunity & Microbes as my home area.  Haven't seen anything on the results page from that home area at all which makes me think they're still reviewing.  I remember reading each home area reviews the apps separately.

My PI is MIMG (immunity and microbes) I'll ask him or someone in the lab tomorrow to see if they've begun reviewing applications.

one thing I will tell you about ACCESS: Last year, I applied.  The online thingy said "under review" until I gave up checking in March.

Also, I received the email saying my app status was updated on August 8, and the letter attached was dated in March.  So if you don't hear from ACCESS, it may not be good. I'd suggest calling at some point to check.

[i have no idea when they sent out invites last year, btw.]

    That's just mean.......

I applied to UCLA ACCESS under CDB and received interview notification before Christmas. My recruitment status on the ACCESS page is still "Under Review".

I don't know if USC PIBBS is still reviewing applications, but I actually submitted my application 2 weeks after the deadline and my last rec. writer submitted her letter on 12/30, and they offered me an interview last week.

    HTH!

Also, glad to hear that UVa is still reviewing apps, though I'm starting to lose hope.

Major props on the USC interview! That's freaking awesome! Clutch move...

  3. I want to know if UCLA Access are still reviewing applications too.  I'll probably cave in and call them directly if I don't get any news from any program today.

I've asked some of the grad students here and they have no clue. I'm tempted to just walk over and ask in person, but wanted to see if someone knew already. I applied to MCDB, which home area did you choose?

  4. I spoke to another applicant that called the program today...I want to vomit

Dude, you got an interview with UW. That is a huge accomplishment! They're very selective with that program from what I hear. My PI has a connection at the school and it's one of the best programs for your field. Lots of cool stuff being done there. No sure what type of work you want to get into, but the HIV research there is really interesting. I've learned just to relax and enjoy the holidays. You stood out to a program that takes 7 people each application cycle. You'll be fine!

  5. "GRE scores shouldn't be that important" - unfortunately the facts indicate they are important. Just look at the gradcafe results search database and also the GPA/GRE combination of people with offers in this thread - if you have a high GPA/GRE and research experience you will get an interview. If you don't then its a crapshoot - your best shot is to apply to as many mid and low tier schools and hope someone likes your app. The alternate and best way to reduce the "hope element" is to create a relationship with PIs at these mid and low tier schools and then you have a much better shot of getting an interview/offer.

It really is unfortunate, but true. I get a lot of mixed reviews from professors. Some say that the GRE can be a deal breaker and some say that they don't even look at GRE scores when they review an application. This is coming from professors at top research universities. It really is a bummer. I have specialized training in the field of stem cell biology through a fully funded internship and staff position. I have presented 4 posters and done 3 oral presentations. I'm about to finish my Master's program with a 4.0; will be defending my thesis in February. Currently preparing two manuscripts for publication. All my thesis work was done at a top research university. My numbers might not be stellar, but it really doesn't say anything about my abilities. I'm not the best with multiple choice test, I'd rather be able to explain my train of thought through essay based questions. I wish there were other ways to "test" our abilities. Ok, rant over. GRE looks to be important, but not a deciding factor. Happy holidays, everyone!

  6.

I had a hard time deciding between UC Denver's CSD program or the Biomedical Sciences umbrella program (which includes CSD). I decided to go with the latter because the program admin told me that "The CSD program gets around 10-15 applications each year, invites ~6-7 students to interview, makes ~3-4 offers, hoping to admit at least one or two."

In contrast, the BMS has a much bigger pool so I thought I'd have a better chance. Anyway, It's a small program that invites few people so if you haven't gotten one yet I'd call.

I decided to go with CSD because I already know what I want to do. Also, I thought having direct experience working with embryonic stem cell and studying their differentiation would make me stand out. I didn't know CSD only interviews 6-7 people. I thought more people would apply directly to departments if they had the chance.

  7. Kenton. I submitted my app on the 25th and one of my letter writers decided to submit all of his letters at about 11pm on the 30th(!!!)(I also had other Dec 1 deadlines so that was scary!). For that particular app, though, the LOR notification wouldn't go out until your application was completely submitted (so backwards).

Yea. I really didn't like the backwards thing, neither did my recommenders. I submitted my app on the 21st and my last letter went in on the 27th. I want to email/call Kenton, but I'm too chicken. I guess I don't want a rejection from there. Did they give you a choice of dates or was it one date? I'm really hopping they do it in waves. Might be my low GRE scores, but I thought my MS degree and experience would make up for that.

  8. I don't know how they're sending invites (rolling or in batches). It couldn't hurt to call!

Thanks! Congrats on the interview, though. Did you hear from Kenton (the admin director) or the school directly? Looking at the results from last year, it looks like they sent the invites in one batch. When did you turn in your completed application? Mine was close towards the end due to one of my recommenders not submitted their letter until the wednesday before the app deadline.
