Hi, I'm a current masters in social work student. I think the MSW is usually considered a professional degree and not a stepping stone to the Sociology PhD. Also, check with the school you want to apply to and see if they think you need a sociology background. From what I hear, lots of sociology doctoral programs take people from related fields such as yours, including the top ranked schools. I considered Sociology, but with my interest and experience, Social Work is a better fit for me (as of today). Anyone in Sociology have a take on this?

Congratulations to the person who posted an admit in the results section for Albany's doctoral program. Would you be willing to tell us what your research focus is? This school has some interesting faculty (to me) and I would love to hear your impressions of the school and if you have made a decision yet. Thanks in advance for your help and thanks for posting your results.

I'm at UC Berkeley and we are at some of the same placements as SF state and CSU East Bay. That said, I think people here are hoping that the reputation and alumni networking opportunities will be better at UC Berkeley. Who knows really?

My professor is really stingy with solid A's. How would I go about asking him or is it not worth it? Any tips? Also how early is too early to ask? I'm applying next Fall.

I'm starting the PhD application process to apply next year. Is there anybody else out there like me?

I graduated from Sonoma State and was accepted to UCLA. My verbal score was high, but quant was low. but, I also had a lot of work experience. I don't think you should settle for second best. With your initiative and willingness to work hard you can get in where you want and you will be bummed if you settle. Even if that means you have to take a year off and study for the GRE. You can pm me if you want. I am currently attending UC Berkeley.

Regarding foodstamps: I'm studying as a masters in social work in CA. We were just informed at an agency visit that assets (property) are not counted if you have minor in the home. I think this is a new regulation. Definitely worth checking it out.
