  1. Thanks for the responses. Yes, due to the fact that hard sciences are better funded, i have the impression that comms and humanities depts are the less appreciated, and will be slashed the moment there's a budget issue. Well, due to my lack of knowledge on the types of comms phds and career paths, that's why I'm here looking for answers. Pardon my ignorance. I'm still at the stage of looking at various phd paths and pondering about where i can end up. I might find something i really like with conviction, and still carve out a good career. Would anyone be able to give a very brief outline of the types of comms phds and what careers they lead to?
  2. I can't give you specific advice on the programs themselves, apart from the fact that work experience is valued, and that most programs are of comparable standard, and people choose based on networking opportunities. But about singapore - having lived there for years, i can tell you it won't be a good place to go if you want a liberal academic environment. It's a dictatorship and tightly controls free speech and academic freedom, to the point that it trickles down to how students/instructors think and work.
  3. Dear all, Would anyone know where are the best schools in canada for studying the field of Organisational Behaviour? (PHD) I have on my list Toronto and BC, but i understand that excellence in business faculties may differ from overall university rankings. Not to mention that in some schools, OB is actually taught in the sociology dept, not business! Any insight is appreciated...
  4. Well, i'm thinking of a career change and pretty flexible about what kind of 'communication studies' i am doing. I'm still in the process of researching my options. I've heard that Communications academia aren't as highly valued as academia in the hard sciences, and some have difficulty finding work. So i'm asking if anyone can share his/her experiences regarding such issues.
  5. Hi, I have a good bachelor's business degree, and have been working in publishing for a number of years. I am considering a Communications phd to move up in my career, be it in academia or back in the private sector. What kind of jobs do such phd holders get into? If they were to teach, do they get the short end of the stick compared to 'hard science' academics? Rgds
  6. Morning, I have been pondering over grad school, and a PhD in Communications is one of my options. I like the course, but i'm afraid it's being seen as a 'flippant' subject for lazy people, as compared to some hard science phd. However, I am not sure what kind of career prospects does this PhD lead to, compared to, say... a management phd or even social science phd in academia. Can anyone share advice or friends' experiences? Which schools in the US and canada would you consider renowned for such a course? Thanks!
