  1. Hi, Not sure why I'm posting this. Maybe someone can relate. As we all know, the first semester of grad school is really stressful, as you adjust to a new school, new colleagues, an exponentially advanced curriculum, etc. I just found out that my mom has cancer, and the prognosis isn't good. Fortunately, I'm nearby, so I can be with her. But I feel like my studies have been shot to hell. Instead of trying to succeed, I'm trying to survive. And I'm barely doing that. Anyone have any words of advice, or similar experiences?
  2. I don't think you can go wrong with SF State, but I'm probably biased because I was born in the Bay Area. Locally, the school's writing and English programs have excellent reputations. Plus, even if USF did offer you money, tuition at SF State would probably far less. Have you visited the campus? It's located on the outskirts of the city (i.e. "the boring part") and the campus itself isn't much to look at, but you can find much cheaper housing around the school than in other parts of the city, especially if you are willing to live with roommates. Plus, the Bay Area is bursting with writers and aspiring writers, so you'll have tons of options for extracurricular activities--readings, writing groups, etc. But again, I'm a native, so it's hard for me to be objective. I'm probably going to SF State, too (but not for creative writing), so maybe I'll see you there!
  3. Hi Hadley, I totally agree with you. I was very interested in their Language and Rhetoric program, but their lack of communication/organization dampened my initial enthusiasm.
  4. Perhaps contacting the director of graduate studies would yield a better result? I was concerned because my online application states that the department did not receive any of my materials (although the "application complete" section indicates that my application was, in fact, complete and I emailed them about it in Dec.). Then, I thought maybe my file was on hold because I don't have a MA. But now, I think it's all just a crap shoot. I don't know whether tequila shots for my nerves or Pepto shots for my developing ulcers would be more appropriate.
  5. Well, it's been three weeks since I received a "two to three week" response from the grad secretary, and still no word! I'm totally pulling my hair out. I must be on some sort of waiting list... Good luck to the rest of you who are waiting from UW also.
  6. Don't give up hope! Some schools email rejections and mail acceptances. Seems odd, but it happens.
  7. I feel your pain, those who are still waiting. The silence is deafening. Too bad the Grad Cafe doesn't sell hard liquor.
  8. Out of curiosity, how many folks here are non-Lit? I'm a Rhetcomp nerd myself, although my undergrad degree was in Lit. My interests evolved gradually after school. But, thanks to my UG institution's relentless indoctrination, I will always have a soft spot for Foucault, no matter where I end up.
  9. Thanks for the info! My friends visibly cringe every time I mention the words "grad school," so it's nice to find others who are playing the waiting game, also. I've thought about emailing the graduate secretary, but experience tells me that I will receive a canned, "the admissions committee is meeting this week" sort of response.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm new here. A little bit about me: after taking a couple years off school to work, I made a failed attempt to get my master's. Well, I didn't fail, but the school sucked. So, I applied to the Ph.D program at U Dub as a way to escape, but then dropped out of my program completely. Now, I ever-so-anxiously wait. I am a slave to the mail. Heaven protect any postman that comes near me. I got into the master's program last year (heard around March 13), but am not sure about the Ph.D, which I'm sure is more competitive. If I don't get in there, I can go to Okay State School backup, get my master's, and try again, while also applying to some programs that I ignored this year because they required a master's or seemed out of my league. Long story short, has anyone heard anything from them? It starting to seem a little late, and no news isn't necessarily good news. The graduate secretary told me people would hear in Feb or March.
