Thanks, Sarab. Nope, that was my only option and I was encouraged to apply by my POI who I had worked with before on several studies and papers. One of my letter writers (a recently retired prof there) said they'd be crazy if they turned me down. But, oh well. We'll see what happens next.
I'm looking forward to good news for the rest of you guys!!
Nothing from PSU either. I got a text on Friday from a friend who's a current PhDC there saying "What's your news??" And of course I had none and I got all squirrelly that he knew something that I didn't and he wasn't telling me!!! He just said that he knew they were making decisions soon, but didn't know anything other than that. Gah!!! Frustrating!
I am not a linguist, but I am intensely interested in language. I speak a few, read a lot about languages and an anthro friend recommended that I read Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle by Daniel Everett, Dean of Arts & Sciences and Linguistics Prof at Bentley Uni. It was fantastic. I highly recommend it as a fun, yet academic read.
I'm right there with you on PSU. I have a trip coming up in Mid March and I'm trying to tell myself I won't hear anything before that... Still torture.
Please don't! You still have schools to hear from, any one of those could be a yes! And if it doesn't work out this year, you can always try again. Ask around, many of us have applied before. Keep that chin up!!
Or the reverse could be true. I have so much to do with my 2 day jobs and I don't want to worry about any of it. Waiting for decisions takes up so much brain space!
I sent all of them a hand written thank you card and a gift card for somewhere they like. Nothing huge, just a little thank you. I'm a few years removed from school, so it was a bit outside their normal letter writing to do this for me. And since it was near the holidays, I said my thank yous and happy holidays.
I like this! And it seems like a fun brain exercise in general. Yes... I'm a nerd.
This thread is great, though. I am really liking all the thought provoking ideas.
