@RP15 and @Humulus_lupulus, sorry to ask but did your awards pages show your status after you got the rejection email?

    Hey,

    The award page currently says:

"There is no information about your award status at this moment."

But I'm assuming they didn't send the email by mistake haha, so no hope here. Cheers!

If I remember right the NDSEG technically pays a bit more in terms of both tuition and stipend, but you can't defer it, whereas you can defer the NSF GRFP. If your department guarantees a stipend for your first two years but not afterward, it might make more sense to take the GRFP and defer it to make sure your covered for 5 years. This thread has more.

Pretty much where I'm at. I'm finishing up my 2nd year, which was funded.

That's why NDSEG is not off limits... Any idea when funding begins? If it's in the Fall, then I'll have a unfunded Summer if I accept NDSEG (since NSF GRFP starts June 1st.)

  3. Would anyone here take NDSEG over NSF? Is there any reason to do so?

For my institution, NDSEG covers everything, whereas NSF's maximum salary is a few thousand under what grad students get paid here.

  4. I'm a 2nd year here. Got it as well :)  E/VG VG/E VG/VG

I think it's even more nuts when you actually FEEL the pressure of needing money, and then you get awarded NSF!!

    I'm still in shock lol

Crossing my fingers for NDSEG though! They actually finance me 100%, whereas NSF gets me at ~90% (for the stipend... and even less for tuition).

  5. I'm in a similar position (except I have no child). I can use some advice as well.

My fiancée (who is south american) will be immigrating to the US around next Feb/March 2016. I'm deciding between UCB and Stanford (EE PhD, F15). It will take a few weeks, and probably a few months, before she can get a job. Thus, initially our only source of income will be what I get from UCB/Stanford. Which city has the cheapest salary to living cost ratio? Both universities have a salary of around $30K I believe... (that's not including summer salaries). Any help would be awesome!

  6. My interviews were great. I had one Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, with two different professors (one of them my POI).

I'm not sure if the interviews are mandatory for all who will be admitted, or if a select group get interviewed =/

  7. @rp15 Advice from my professor, "Other than the reputation of the school itself, there are some other factors you should think of. Location of the school is important because you are going to spend next 5 or 6 years in that place. More importantly, choose a professor who works with his/her students." You should go and talk to your professor about that. Professor knows each other well. :)

This is correct. However, it doesn't help my decision making when both locations are superb, and both surely have excellent professors/research groups to work with! I guess I will just have to check it out during the Visit Days :)

  8. @rp15 that sounds very promising.. What group/area have you applied?

Indeed. I've applied to the EE PhD department. My interests are in semiconductor physics/devices (specifically, emerging electronic devices).

Although I know MIT/Stanford/Berkeley are #1 in EE, I would like to know which university has the best reputation in semiconductor devices specifically.

Either way I cannot go wrong with any of these institutions.

  9. @rp15 which group have you applied to at Stanford? Were you interviewed by poi or ad com?

I was interviewed by a POI today and will be once again interviewed by an ad com tomorrow. By "unofficial", I meant that the POI today told me that I'll most likely be admitted.

  10. For ECE, you still have to wait. (At least for PhD)

I have two interviews next week with two different professors. I am assuming that they are still in the process. The Material Science and Engineering department, however, has already sent out their admission letters
