There is a "Decision Letter" posted on the ApplyWeb page. I was not at the recruitment day, nor was I invited to it
-
Stanford, Columbia, UCLA, NYU Stern, UCI. At this point I think the only one I have any odds of receiving an offer from is UCI.
-
Just got a rejection from UC Berkeley.

Undergrad Institution: UC Santa Barbara Majors: Statistical Science B.S., Psychology B.A., minor in Russian GPA: 3.91, rank is either 1st in department or very close Type of Student: DWM GRE General Test: Q: 168 (96%) V: 165 (95%) W: 5.5 (97%) Math GRE: did not take Research Experience: NSF REU in Artificial Intelligence, resulted in a poster Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Honors Program Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math Tutor for 2 years in group format basically identical to discussion sections Letters of Recommendation: 1 from chair of undergrad program, 1 from professor who taught a stochastic processes series where I did an honors contract, 1 from REU mentor. None (to my knowledge) are well-known. Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Grad classes in Measure Theory & Time Series Analysis, worked in a psych lab for a bit, 3 years student government experience including co-chairing a 500-person $70,000-budget conference. Research Interests: Applications to social, economic, and political sciences. In my case, Andrew Gelman's research - probability/statistics applications to government/politics.
-
That place is one of my two dream schools due to matching my research interests very well.. guess that's another one to give up on. That leaves UCLA as the only "reach" school that has yet to admit anyone and thus that I still keep some hope for.
-
Yeah, but I imagine it's quite a difference from living in CA. This morning, via email. This is for Brown Applied Math, not Biostats. I was not invited to a recruitment day.
-
Thanks! Their funding offer is quite small (17k) and includes TAing, I'll need to talk to the department to determine whether it's enough to live on in NY.
-
Just got a rejection from Brown, and an acceptance from SUNY Stony Brook with funding! I'm very excited as I now have the opportunity to live in New York!

Your profile is very, very similar to my own. Virtually the same double major. Similar coursework: by the time you apply you'll have more real analysis than me, but fewer advanced probability courses. My GPA is higher, but your school is no doubt more prestigious than mine - an upper-mid-range big public school. We've both been involved in research weakly related to stats, you probably have a little bit more than I do. GRE - basically the same thing. Only major differences is that I am interested in probability and applications to social/economic/political sciences. And, I have a couple of misc wildcard-type things on my application. I applied to a number of differently-named programs like Statistics, IEOR, Applied Math, that all study the same things. I'll post my profile/stats in the admission results thread at some point in the future, as right now I have only received response from two schools: an acceptance from an institution lower-ranked than my undergrad, and a rejection from a very blingy school that I was never going to get in to anyway. My department seems to have hope for me, but I honestly don't whether a bunch of admissions committee professors are going to react kindly to a rather complex/confusing background. Either way, my results might be fairly informative for you.

Just got a rejection from Princeton's ORFE. Not too disappointed with the result itself since it's expected given my non-Ivy-league background alone. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that I even applied there, as Princeton is one of two places that refused to waive my application fee. I could really use an extra hundred or so dollars right now..

Looking back at past years, this coming week is the week that many results have been announced. By now I've given up hope on: Stanford, Brown, UC Berkeley. Hoping to hear back from some of the other places I've applied to to see what kind of other options I have, if any.
-
I'd rank Harvard higher, simply due to its name appeal to uninformed employers and faculty.
-
Given I have a grad school offer, I honestly might not even bother now. I would have thought that a statistics-type skillset would be in demand right now, yet there seem to be very few opportunities in the San Diego area. Submitting my resume (which should in theory be quite strong given a 3.9 and far-above-average programming experience) to the ones that are open has so far achieved little beyond getting my email added to some SPAM database. For everyone on this forum's sake, I hope that this reflective on the San Diego area, and not a sign of what's to come after we all finish our dissertations 5 years down the line.

Anyone heard back from Brown Applied Math?
CauchyProcess replied to whereicango's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
No, I have not heard back. -
UCSB interviewed me more than half a month ago, was told that I am "shortlisted" but final result depends on funding which is not determined until March.
-
It seems like Berkeley just sent out another round of acceptances. There are now 8 people who have been accepted and posted it in database. For comparison, only 3 people last year got an acceptance and posted it in the database. Since, per their website, they admit about 14-20 people per year, I'd say odds are myself & anyone else who hasn't heard from them yet is not accepted.
-
To some extent, that's the case. But saying that is like saying that in order to get into Harvard's PhD program, one has to go to get their B.S. from Yale. I think to some extent, people's research can speak for itself, but who knows, it may be much more exclusive than I anticipate.
-
No kidding. At this point I'm just glad I have an acceptance at all, even if the department which it is from is not as strong in most areas as my undergrad. The mathematics of what we are learning are out there, and do not change based on geographic region. At the end of the day we'll all be able to learn/research what we want, as long as we have the time and funding. On another note, the one acceptance I have gotten went straight to the "Junk" folder in my email, which is kind of funny given that it's just about one of the most important emails I've gotten in months. So, I would recommend everyone check those.
-
Lots of schools have not published results yet. Out of 11 schools, I have only heard back from one. Of the 10 I have not heard back from, only 2 have accepted anyone yet.
-
Got accepted today into UCSC's program. Don't know too much about their department (I applied to schools primarily based on geographic location) so going to talk to them & find out more. Stoked!
-
Could anyone admitted to Berkeley post your GPA & similar info to get an idea of where the bar was set?
-
Congrats to the Berkeley admit! This is the first program I've applied to that has sent out any acceptances/rejections, and since I haven't heard back, I'm probably not accepted. I guess that's OK since it's a very competitive institution and coming from a non-Ivy-League-type institution makes it a long shot for me no matter what.

What would a profile of an "obvious admit" at a place like Stanford look like?
