  1. I will be starting at OSU this coming fall. I saw a lot of people talking about Clintonville and Grandview as two most popular places to live in Columbus. What are the pros and cons of each community? How are they different? I personally would to live in a quiet, safe community with convenient public transportation to campus. Any advice? Thank you so much in advance!

  2. I don't know much about OSU, but UT-Austin would likely be a pretty decent fit. For family, you have Crosnoe and Raley. For criminology, you have Warr and Pettit. Austin is also getting Sarah Brayne starting Fall 2016, which would be nice for your criminology interests as well.

Yes, UT-Austin has more to offer in terms of academic resources and it seems to be a more prestigious program than OSU. But I really like the welcoming community and friendly people at OSU, so it's very hard to say no. Any advice?

  3. Penn applicants, how do you check your status? On applyweb? I still haven't heard anything either, I assume it's a rejection because it's so late, but it'd be nice to know!

I received an email telling me to check the application portal. After logging into the portal, under the status for the recommendation letters, there was a decision letter.

  4. Hi guys, I'm now choosing between two programs, both in the top 10 to 20 tier. One of them has a much better fit with my academic interests, but I knew instantly during my visit that I wouldn't fit into the culture and people there. I actually left a day early during the visit because I felt very out of place there. The other program is not as prestigious and doesn't have as many resources in my areas of interest, but I genuinely felt welcomed and excited during the visit. With a smaller cohort, the sense of community and support was very strong, and I got an additional fellowship there as well. My heart lies in the second program for sure, but it's also hard to turn down the resources at the first one. I know people all have different reasoning when choosing a program, but I would really appreciate some advice or comments!

  5. The USNWR rankings incorporate reputation, but imperfectly since the sample is small and skewed. But it does provide some rough info.

As far as ranking in general, the hoary chestnut is that the vast majority of grads who get TT jobs land in programs one tier below their PhD program. If your goal is to teach in an R1, many probably wouldn't pick a third-tier school over a first-tier school, even if the fit at the third-tier school were somewhat better.

But yes, if you're choosing between #5 and #13, and you'd thrive at #13 as the disciple of a professor who's a star in a sub-field, but you'd feel aimless and unsupported at #5, with no clear advisor, many would sensibly choose #13. A star advisor could trump a slightly lower overall rank.

Having said that, I think most people would choose Princeton or Berkeley over UT. But that doesn't mean that's the right decision for you, after weighing the complex factors that are important to you personally.

Basically, I don't think there's a formula or easy answer.

When you talked about first-tier schools, does that mean top 10, 20 or 30 programs according to USNWR ranking?

  6. Hi guys! I have been talking to my professors about the different options I have now, and one of my professor kept talking about historical reputation of each program. For example, he said UT-Austin is always respected as a traditionally strong program that should have landed in the top 10. And on the other hand, Princeton hasn't received that much prestige and attention until recent years. It seems that in the world of sociologists, reputation matters more than the actual ranking. I guess what I'm trying to ask here is 1) how to find out the reputation of each program? and 2) how to balance ranking with reputation?

  7. I don't know if this is the right place to vent, but the frustration of these all just went to overdrive mode. Like almost all of you here, I worked my butt off for application, and have no back up plans that is viable or even anything remotely to anything I am comfortable doing. I am a Business major, my boyfriend, my family, all of them have been criticising me for wanting to do Sociology, they tell me what can you do with that? It's a useless subject for people with too much time..and last of all, they have been saying that I have been wasting my money applying for Sociology programs with a Bachelors of Business background and if I fail, it's cause I am too ignorant to recognise that. I have 4 schools left and the lack of response is turning me into a wreck. Nobody supports my decision to pursue this and so many people are waiting to see me fail. I don't know what I am going to do in September, most of us that haven't got any good decisions don't and brrr...potato. I just wanted to vent. Thanks for reading!

I know it is very hard that your family doesn't seem very supportive of your decision, but what I always do at times like this is to think about professors who wrote recommendation letters on my behalf. I'm sure people who wrote your recommendation letters are very confident and proud of you, which is why they agreed to put their reputation on the line for you in the first place. Hopefully thinking of them will make you feel more supported! Hang in there!

  8. Folks still waiting to hear from Harvard should check their application status online. I checked today, and apparently the decision has been available since Friday.

Anyone have any insight into how often people are accepted from the waitlist there? I'm sending an email to see if I can get a picture for it, but I figured I'd check here, too.

Can I ask where did you check the decision? I went to the application site with the status, and all it says is that my application was submitted and complete. Where did you see the decision?

  9. This is so scary I applied to nyu harvard princeton michigan u penn northwestern and columbia and have only gotten a clear cut rejection notice from princeton. This is cruel committees just reject us already lol

I applied to every single school you named except Northwestern. I actually really appreciate Princeton's timely rejection now, because at least I don't have to think about it ever again.
