  1. Declined admission to U Wisconsin Madison and Penn State today. Good luck on decisions, everyone! I'm finding it pretty difficult to make the final decision.
  2. I applied to Syracuse. I haven't heard anything about funding or merit awards... One of my other schools also told me they would have info about funding "soon," but that was when I got my letter on 2/9. So, yeah. I'm honestly not expecting to get any information about funding before we have to send in our decisions. Are you by chance going to the open house tomorrow for Syracuse? I am!
  3. Congrats! I received mine on Saturday. Are you going to the open house? I'm so excited!
  4. Thanks so much for your reply! It sounds like a nice place. I'm not really much of a city person, and I can definitely see my self going someplace with a pretty small-town campus. This decision making is going to be really difficult though!
  5. As for UMD, I got an acceptance email from the dept. and then like a day later an email from the grad school telling me a decision was available from them online. Then a few days later I got a hard copy of the grad schools acceptance letter in the mail. Hope that helps!
  6. Is anybody going to the Indiana University - Bloomington open house? Or is anyone familiar with that school/that area? I really wanted to go, but it's a bad weekend for me. Could you tell me what it's like?
  7. Just wondering, is anyone else planning on going to U Wisconsin Madison's open house? I'm flying out from Philly for it! That's my number one school now! My sister-in-law went to undergrad there and she loved it, so I'm excited to see Madison!
  8. I have to celebrate! I got accepted to both University of Wisconsin Madison and Penn State today!
  9. By the by, has anyone heard anything from Syracuse about when we will be getting notification letters? I had my phone interview on 3/1, but that was one of the latest days. Also, on the results from last year, it seems like they sent out notifications around 3/20-ish and had some kind of open house for accepted students... I guess I'm just antsy for information from them! The interview made me want to go there more.
  10. Yeah, I don't know. I guess we'll never know. It was sort of my top choice. But I'm pretty adaptable, I'm sure I will be happy wherever I end up. And I'm sure as highly ranked as they are they probably got a ridiculous number of apps too. Oh well. At least I've been accepted other places! You have great stats as well - seems like a lot of experience! I don't have nearly that much. Was UMD your top choice? I'm not sure about going there, mostly because the cost of living is a lot higher than the other schools I was looking at. We'll see! Good luck with your other schools!
  11. I have a 3.94 CumGpa and a 4.0 MajorGpa. I'm an out of field applicant, majored in Linguistics. Lots if research in Linguistics as well. V610 Q710 AW4.5. .... And I was flat out rejected from Northwestern this moring. Sigh. I was pretty sure I would at least get waitlested at NU. But C'est la vie. I guess we will never really know why they decide what they do...
  12. Sigh. I'm getting kinda depressed reading all the Northwestern acceptances on the results page. My status page still has no 'view decision' link. This doesn't stop me from checking every hour or so... Grats to everyone who got in! I really hope to be joining you...!
  13. I haven't gotten anything on my Northwestern status page yet, and I'm going crazy waiting! Grats on your acceptance! If you wouldn't mind sharing stats, I'd appreciate it!
  14. Hi all! SO glad I found this thread. I'm a non-major applicant (I majored in Linguistics). GPA 3.94, Major GPA 4.0, GRE Q710 V610 AW4.5, and I have a ton of research experience in Linguistics. I'm applying to: Northwestern U Wisconsin Madison Syracuse Penn State Montclair State I've already been accepted to: U Maryland College Park Indiana University Bloomington I just saw yesterday that a bunch of people have heard back from U Wisconsin Madison already, and I'm freaking out that I haven't gotten a letter yet. I don't see why they just don't update the online status in addition to mailing out letters. It would put make me much happier! I also have a phone interview with Syracuse on Tuesday - does anyone who has done it have any advice on what it's like? I heard it was rather informal. Is it something they do for every applicant or is it a special subset they are considering for admission? Anyway, good luck to everyone with your apps!

    New Brunswick, NJ

I'm a senior at Rutgers now, so I hope I can help you out. It's definitely super helpful to have a car in New Brunswick for groceries. There is a major chain grocery store (Stop & Shop) about 5 minutes away by car (up Easton Ave) that I don't think would be accessible any other way. If you don't have a car, there is a grocery store down George st in NB called "C-Town" which is less nice in my opinion, but I think they would have the basics. A lot of people bike around. As for snow, if you needed to get somewhere the buses didn't go, I don't think your bike would be much help immediately after a storm, but once they get sidewalks and streets cleared it wouldn't be so bad I guess. The buses are the best bet for getting around on campus though. The system seems confusing at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. parktran.rutgers.edu is the parking and transportation website, where you will find bus routes. Another good site is nexbus.com (navigate to the Rutgers page) where they have real time GPS locations of buses, and it will tell you when a particular bus will next be at a particular stop. Newark air port (in Newark NJ) is where you would want to fly in. There's definitely cabs available, but I don't really know about cost. The train could also pick you up and drop you off at the station in New Brunswick, like a block or two from campus. Depending on the apartment, I think that would be fine for monthly expenses. I paid 800/month for a studio apt. with utilities included (except internet) and it had a separate kitchen and a big bathroom. Most of the apartments are houses divided up into a bunch of apartments. There is one or two complexes, but those are like a 10 min walk from campus, which is okay if you don't mind the walk. The website for housing search is http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu/index.php?HousingSearch=1 and that's where you will find places to live. If you want to live in on campus grad housing, I don't know much about that, sorry! There is a mall less than 10 minutes away, but you'd need a car to get there I'm pretty sure. There's a movie theater too. A lot of stuff is along Route 1. But if you have a car, Jersey is full of malls and stuff. There's one in Bridgewater, NJ which is probably a half hour away. As for shopping without a car, I don't really think there's much available. Most of the restaurants are along Easton Ave which is definitely within walking distance (probably 5 minutes walking depending on where you live). There's also some shopping along George street in the downtown part of NB, but not a whole lot. I hope that helped! Feel free to message me if you need clarification!
