  1. Yea, I saw those too! I'll definitely ask and let you know if they say something interesting/unexpected!
  2. I haven't had an interview yet where the interviewer really grilled me on my research! Though one of them asked a lot of probing questions about the minor details of my work. I guess we all need to be super prepared this week; schools like Stanford/Penn get a lot of great applicants, and probably grill you to figure out if you really know what you're talking about. I'm sure you did great though! I'm really excited to visit Stanford this week! Best of luck, and have a great time at Penn!!
  3. Oh wow, it's great to hear the campus is nice! I've never been to the west coast! So I'm excited. I sent my list of four faculty a while back, as they asked, but haven't heard back if I have all 4 scheduled or not. Maybe if I don't hear back by Tuesday, I'll call the secretary. I actually did an REU at Penn, and it was a wonderful experience. The campus is pretty nice, though a little smaller than other places. The students are great to talk to bc they care about more than just STEM fields (in contrast to my UG, where most people are just hard core science/bio/med). I'm sure you'll have a great time!
  4. Hi AxyC, Thanks for the information. Did you already get the list of people you are skyping with at Stanford? The problem for me is that there are more faculty at Stanford who are doing research I'm really interested in, so I think I'll do the opposite as you and Skype with Penn. Though I guess I'll miss out on the senior grad students putting in a good word for me In any case, best wishes to you and tuckbro, who is also going to Penn!
  5. Hi, Who here is interviewing at Penn and Stanford next week? Have you gotten your final list of faculty you are interviewing with yet? And how are you dealing with the conflicts?? Thanks!
  6. This sir, is a very good point. Even if there are a total of 1,000 applicants, it doesn't take longer than a few hours to update a website with either a Yay or a Nay! Especially since they already have a template for both letters. In fact, you could have a simple script running on the application website that does it, and you re-use that script each year. I think the likely scenario, as someone else pointed out, is that everyone who was going to get an invite has already gotten an invite. But there is always the possibility that a candidate may elect to not accept and go to another school. In such cases, I think they like to not reject everyone else so that they have back-ups, which for a school of MIT's caliber, are likely just as good as the "first choices." Of course this is all highly speculative, and could be completely wrong!
  7. Have you guys thought about where you would go if you got into all the places you are interviewing..I just started thinking about it, and it's a lot harder than I originally thought it would be >.<
  8. Thanks for the information! So I guess they don't specifically try to ensure that they are admitting a specific number (non-zero) candidates into each of the areas. They merely attempt to ensure that they admit a certain number of people into EE and CS.
  9. Agreed. Btw, just wondering, does MIT accept into each area, or do they first accept you generally into EECS, and then you can do w/e you want? I was wondering if everyone is in the same boat, or you are only really competing in the area where you apply.
  10. I wonder if they are posting results by Area? So maybe that explains why a lot of CS results have been posted, but not so many of the other areas? Just speculating. I still think most results that have been posted have been for international students..
  11. I think research experience (i.e., the co-op you mentioned) is an excellent way to demonstrate your experience in the area. I honestly think with a CS minor, and all those math classes, you will be fine. If you REALLY want, you can take a basic circuits class next semester -- might be interesting to you actually; there is a lot of research in analyzing brain circuits similar to analyzing traditional electrical circuits. I think you should be fine though. Best wishes!!
  12. Hi pterosaur, I think you should be able to apply to BME programs with specific interests in neural/neuro-engineering. I think they generally just want you to have taken the basic engineering math classes (linear algebra, differential equations, vector calculus, probability/statistics). I think it also helps if you have taken computer science or programming (basic knowledge of java, c++, or matlab). But beyond that I don't think having a neuroscience degree puts you at a disadvantage. I think they just want to make sure that you can handle the BME coursework, which tends to be quantitative. If you get interviews for PhD programs in BME, you will just need relevant research experience, and that will matter the most. If I were you I would try to take some of the math classes or programming that I mentioned if you haven't, and show a strong performance on the GRE quantitative (at least 160/170). After that if you have strong/relevant research experience/papers, then you should be good to go. Hope that helps!
  13. Third! Well, since we're speculating, it seems most official admits (and not unofficial emails from POIs) are international students or CS students. For example, I have yet to see a domestic EE admit. Having said that, this forum is a very small sample size...
  14. I feel most of the admits so far are international... EDIT: Nevermind, I think they've started to send them all out now. Good luck everyone!
  15. I don't think all of them have been sent yet. I wouldn't throw in the towel yet! Yea, for Stanford the POI who contacted me asked me if I had conflicting times, and at the time I didn't, but she said if something came up to contact her and they would work something out. I think she was implying that there might be a second week for Stanford. But you mentioned you already booked flights, so did I...I'm half considering if it is possible to change the flights a little bit for HST to interview on one of the two days with the PIs I really want to work with, and then fly to Penn.. I wouldn't say that. I know, for example, at JHU, they interview a more people than they accept. I imagine its the same at Penn.
  16. Sorry to resurrect this old theread, but what did you end up picking jeffma87, and are you happy with your decision? Thanks!
  17. That's great, congrats on a good phone interview, and best wishes for the interview weekend!
  18. Thanks a lot gmedlo! And congrats on hearing from UVA, best wishes for the interview! Thanks for the info, and yea I hope we start hearing back soon, the wait is quite frustrating!! Glad to see another Stanford BioE applicant! Though I don't think we're in direct competition since I'm applying for the biomedical computation research focus (I imagine it would make more sense for them to admit into each research area than just generally, but then again, who knows). Best wishes!
  19. Hi all, I guess I'm late to the party; can't believe I didn't know about this website!! Has anyone heard anything from/applied to Stanford Bioengineering PhD?? From doing a lot of reserarch on this website, it seems in the past tons of people applied there, but this year from all the posts, I don't see anyone. What gives? Due to various constraints I could only apply to 3 schools, and haven't heard from any of them yet! >.> Thanks!
