  1. I had my first Stanford interview yesterday! It went well, I think. She grilled me on my research and then had me do a thought experiment with her. I'd like to think I gave the interviewer educated answers haha. I guess I'll find out later!!

I haven't heard from my other 3 professors yet, but this one was the person that I consider my person of interest :) I'm guessing they're just really busy right now because the visit is this week.

And.. can't wait! Two days until Penn! :D

I haven't had an interview yet where the interviewer really grilled me on my research! Though one of them asked a lot of probing questions about the minor details of my work. I guess we all need to be super prepared this week; schools like Stanford/Penn get a lot of great applicants, and probably grill you to figure out if you really know what you're talking about. I'm sure you did great though! I'm really excited to visit Stanford this week! :D

Best of luck, and have a great time at Penn!! :)

  2. Hi! Thanks :) I hope the Penn interviews go well, and good luck to you at stanford. I have the opposite situation where more people at penn do research I am interested in than at stanford. And I forget if I mentioned this part (typing from my phone so I can't see the other posts right now) but I also live an hour from Stanford and already know that I love the campus. But I kind of don't want to live TOO close to home for graduate school. I like exploring new places :)

I haven't gotten my full list of interviews yet but Stanford made it sound like I get to talk to whoever I have on my faculty interest list. So far I have one of the four scheduled.

Oh wow, it's great to hear the campus is nice! I've never been to the west coast! So I'm excited. I sent my list of four faculty a while back, as they asked, but haven't heard back if I have all 4 scheduled or not. Maybe if I don't hear back by Tuesday, I'll call the secretary.

I actually did an REU at Penn, and it was a wonderful experience. The campus is pretty nice, though a little smaller than other places. The students are great to talk to bc they care about more than just STEM fields (in contrast to my UG, where most people are just hard core science/bio/med). I'm sure you'll have a great time! :)

  3. Penn emailed today to say that we receive our faculty lists when we show up.

I talked to the secretary and she told me what profs indicated that they want to talk to me, so I'll probably focus on reading up on them.

I decided to go to Penn in person because I heard from an inside source that the older graduate students also get a say in who gets admitted. Also it's closer geographically to me, which is far more convenient. Doing Skype interviews for Stanford!

    Hi AxyC,

Thanks for the information. Did you already get the list of people you are skyping with at Stanford?

The problem for me is that there are more faculty at Stanford who are doing research I'm really interested in, so I think I'll do the opposite as you and Skype with Penn. Though I guess I'll miss out on the senior grad students putting in a good word for me :(

In any case, best wishes to you and tuckbro, who is also going to Penn! :)

  4. I am assuming MIT is admitting no more than 150 people? even if they only had one guy at work, does it really take 2 weeks to send out a simple "congratulations, you are accepted" or is the 15th deadline include all the rejection emails too?

This sir, is a very good point. Even if there are a total of 1,000 applicants, it doesn't take longer than a few hours to update a website with either a Yay or a Nay! Especially since they already have a template for both letters. In fact, you could have a simple script running on the application website that does it, and you re-use that script each year.

I think the likely scenario, as someone else pointed out, is that everyone who was going to get an invite has already gotten an invite. But there is always the possibility that a candidate may elect to not accept and go to another school. In such cases, I think they like to not reject everyone else so that they have back-ups, which for a school of MIT's caliber, are likely just as good as the "first choices."

Of course this is all highly speculative, and could be completely wrong! :)

  5.

Judging from the admissions letter, I think applicants are admitted to one out of 2 broad areas: EE or CS. It seems that this year they changed their area classification from like 7 or 8 areas, which are now sub-areas, to only 2. I would infer that the admissions processes for EE and CS are separated to some extent. However I think they also expect few people switching from, say, circuit design to image processing, so there should still be competition within one sub-area.

Thanks for the information! So I guess they don't specifically try to ensure that they are admitting a specific number (non-zero) candidates into each of the areas. They merely attempt to ensure that they admit a certain number of people into EE and CS.

  6. Good point. I strongly suspect all first-choice admissions have been sent out last week.

Agreed. Btw, just wondering, does MIT accept into each area, or do they first accept you generally into EECS, and then you can do w/e you want?

I was wondering if everyone is in the same boat, or you are only really competing in the area where you apply.

  7. To poster above: If you look at the results page, 3 people have heard back after 5th Feb. Like I said, more are pending and will be known. A major difference between this year and the previous years : massive snow that is affecting the operations of all universities on the East Coast and the Midwestern region.

I wonder if they are posting results by Area? So maybe that explains why a lot of CS results have been posted, but not so many of the other areas? Just speculating. I still think most results that have been posted have been for international students..

  8. Thanks for the response!  That's kind of a relief.  I have a CS minor and have taken/am taking all the math classes that you mention.  My first practice GRE quant score was also 164, so I'll probably be OK on that front.  It seems like more of a challenge is deciding whether I want to go for bioengineering or neuroscience...

The thing that concerns me, though, is something like this (from the Tufts BME admissions page): Requirements include a basic knowledge of biology, math through ordinary differential equations, and some basic engineering courses (for example, fluid mechanics, properties of materials, thermodynamics, circuit theory).

I don't have that sort of background, and I'm worried it will put me at a disadvantage.  I am also looking at doing an engineering (mechE or BME) type co-op for my third and final co-op in the fall.  Do you think that would help fill in any perceived gaps?

I think research experience (i.e., the co-op you mentioned) is an excellent way to demonstrate your experience in the area. I honestly think with a CS minor, and all those math classes, you will be fine. If you REALLY want, you can take a basic circuits class next semester -- might be interesting to you actually; there is a lot of research in analyzing brain circuits similar to analyzing traditional electrical circuits. I think you should be fine though.

    Best wishes!!

  9. Hi pterosaur,

I think you should be able to apply to BME programs with specific interests in neural/neuro-engineering. I think they generally just want you to have taken the basic engineering math classes (linear algebra, differential equations, vector calculus, probability/statistics). I think it also helps if you have taken computer science or programming (basic knowledge of java, c++, or matlab). But beyond that I don't think having a neuroscience degree puts you at a disadvantage. I think they just want to make sure that you can handle the BME coursework, which tends to be quantitative. If you get interviews for PhD programs in BME, you will just need relevant research experience, and that will matter the most.

If I were you I would try to take some of the math classes or programming that I mentioned if you haven't, and show a strong performance on the GRE quantitative (at least 160/170). After that if you have strong/relevant research experience/papers, then you should be good to go.

    Hope that helps!

  10. Second you on that!

    Third!

Well, since we're speculating, it seems most official admits (and not unofficial emails from POIs) are international students or CS students. For example, I have yet to see a domestic EE admit. Having said that, this forum is a very small sample size...

  11. I feel most of the admits so far are international...

EDIT: Nevermind, I think they've started to send them all out now. Good luck everyone! :)

  12. Didn't get a UPenn invite - pretty surprised based upon receiving several calls for a PI asking me to interview with her.

I don't think all of them have been sent yet. I wouldn't throw in the towel yet! :)

Just got an interview invite for Penn a few minutes ago!

They had two weekends 2/20-22 ... during stanford. And 2/27-3/1 is HST.

:( Not sure what to do anymore.

I haven't heard anything from JHU yet.

Does anyone have any insight to offer regarding what to do about conflicting interviews?? I already RSVP'd and booked flights for both Stanford and HST... I don't know if its appropriate to ask to go for a different weekend or to do phone/Skype instead?

Yea, for Stanford the POI who contacted me asked me if I had conflicting times, and at the time I didn't, but she said if something came up to contact her and they would work something out. I think she was implying that there might be a second week for Stanford. But you mentioned you already booked flights, so did I...I'm half considering if it is possible to change the flights a little bit for HST to interview on one of the two days with the PIs I really want to work with, and then fly to Penn..

If you get an interview, does it mean that you are basically accepted? I heard from many people that an interview basically means you are in...but what is the chance of getting accepted if you get invited to an interview (UPenn). They said something about a top candidate, and are paying for everything so is there a good chance we are "basically" in?

I wouldn't say that. I know, for example, at JHU, they interview a more people than they accept. I imagine its the same at Penn.

  13. Finished my UVa phone interview and was told I should have a formal email with an interview invite coming soon. Interview weekends are March 7th-9th and 14th-16th, and was told they usually fly people out so they arrive thursday night in time to get dinner. I will probably be going on the 7th-9th unless I have another interview offer for that weekend!

That's great, congrats on a good phone interview, and best wishes for the interview weekend! :)

  14. Jeff, I did not apply to stanford but my friend that has already gotten MIT/UCB-SF interview offers did. I'll let you know if he hears anything.

Just heard from UVa this morning--got an email from a professor saying that they were very interested in my application and that they would like to schedule a phone or skype call with me. From what I've heard from previous applicants, this is basically an interview offer.

To anyone else in the thread, I am a current undergrad in UW BioE, so let me know if you have any questions about the program or would like insight into any of the professors.

Thanks a lot gmedlo! And congrats on hearing from UVA, best wishes for the interview!

Hey Jeff , First good luck in your admission this year.

Well this comunity is not inclusive , maybe a lot of people applied to stanford bioengineering but they did not post anything about it . last year stanford results were out in the end of January , so soon enough we may get more infos.

Ya I do feel the heat biomedical engineering/bioengineering results started surfacing .

Thanks for the info, and yea I hope we start hearing back soon, the wait is quite frustrating!!

    Hi everyone!

New to this site, figured I'd check out my competition/future classmates.

Is this primarily the only thread I should be looking at for BME PhD updates?

CU Boulder Chem/Bioengineering (admitted, visit April 3-6)

Glad to see another Stanford BioE applicant! Though I don't think we're in direct competition since I'm applying for the biomedical computation research focus (I imagine it would make more sense for them to admit into each research area than just generally, but then again, who knows). Best wishes! :)

  15. Hi all,

I guess I'm late to the party; can't believe I didn't know about this website!!

Has anyone heard anything from/applied to Stanford Bioengineering PhD?? From doing a lot of reserarch on this website, it seems in the past tons of people applied there, but this year from all the posts, I don't see anyone. What gives?

Due to various constraints I could only apply to 3 schools, and haven't heard from any of them yet! >.>

    Thanks!
