If you're waiting on Minnesota, this is from the graduate assistant: "We'll be notifying students sometime middle to end of next week. So far, we've only notified the decision to those applicants we're nominating for external fellowships. The bulk of the decisions will be made by mid-week next week."

Those of you waiting on Chicago -- do you think that the silence is an implicit rejection? In past years, it looks like they released all their positive decisions at once. But also in past years, there were more results posted on this forum.

For those wondering, I did email the POI at a school (Chicago) I presume has rejected me. She sent a hurried, but prompt reply expressing regret. She also said, however, "Are you not on the alternate list?" Not sure if this was just a question that popped into her head to ask, or if she had thought that perhaps I would be wait-listed. And if so, perhaps this means there are more positive Chicago results to come. Or....maybe not!
It is astonishing how much time I have spent over-analyzing this three-sentence email!

Question for everyone -- do you think it is distasteful to email a POI at a school which has already rejected you? I'd like to follow up, express my intention of reapplying, and perhaps in the process glean some more information about the decision.

Hey all, long-time lurker here.
Saw 4-5 UChicago postings in the results page. Is it safe to assume that the rest of us were rejected?
Based on the results of previous years, I understand that they send all acceptances/waitlists together in a batch.

That is unfortunately the conclusion I have come to as well. Perhaps there will be a few more released on Monday, but I'd suspect not. And if past years are any judge, they take their time with sending out rejections, which is pretty maddening.

Apply for it as quickly as you can! If a department has a sense that some of your funding will come from a set source, especially one outside the department, they may be more enthusiastic. Get it out of your hands, into theirs, and spare yourself any sense that you could have done more when all is said and done! You got this

Hi all, I have a question about FLAS funding and Chicago. I applied to Chicago and got an email inviting me to apply for FLAS funding (I study Arabic). 1) the deadline is in one week -- if I apply, does that have any bearing on my chances of getting accepted? If so, is it likely that they will wait to announce my decision until after the FLAS deadline?

Sorry if it's in bad form to reply to my own comment, but if really like anyone's perspective. Basically, I am curious whether it is worth it to complete the FLAS application, especially if UChicago is already announcing decisions. The FLAS deadline is in a week, though -- perhaps they're waiting to make/release decisions on applicants who might be eligible for FLAS until after that deadline?
I'm probably over analyzing. Actually, I definitely am! But Chicago is my top choice and the best fit for me and I'm freaking out because I haven't heard anything yet!

I just spoke with the graduate admissions office at Chicago and was told that decisions would be announced "probably in mid-February" ....

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forums but have been lurking for months as I contemplate what options for the future are going to best prepare me for admission to a Middle Eastern Studies PhD program. I'm concerned that I don't have enough relevant experience to be competitive candidate.
Some background: I graduated May 2013 with honors with a degree in International Studies and Spanish. Since that time, I've taken a position at a non-profit focused on college access for low-income students -- great work, but not relevant to my goal of become a professor.
As an undergrad, I didn't take much coursework directly related to MENA, but I did take two years of Arabic, and spent two summers in North Africa through the State Department's Critical Language Scholarship program. This, and some small-time volunteer work I do at a non-profit focusing on Arab-American literature and art, is my only experience with the Arab world.
What I need guidance on is whether this background is enough to go ahead and apply for PhD programs, or if I should try to get more relevant post-college experience first.

Hi everyone, another former lurker deciding to come out of the dark. Applying for a full research grant to Morocco. A few pages back, some folks had made reference to the number of slots available in certain countries for the 2014-2015 grant cycle. Where can this updated information be found? On Fulbright's website, the statistics (at least for Morocco) appear to still be from the previous years.
