  1. Congrats on the acceptances! BTW, can those of you who have gone on visits already possibly describe them? I'm really curious as to what to expect.
  2. Good news since I want to decide in that time frame or shortly there after. Thanks for the info.
  3. Congrats on CU! Another great school to add to your options!
  4. Seems like the exception rather than the rule but I could obviously be very wrong here.
  5. Honestly I think it'll be a trickle from here on out. It seems like if we're not rejected from some of these top schools we're just in second option limbo.
  6. Austin is awesome. I grew up in San Antonio so I spent a lot of time in Austin - mainly for concerts Plus wait till you tube on the rivers in late spring early summer. Nothing like floating down a river with a bunch of beer.
  7. That tumblr is AMAZING I've spent an hour laughing at it.
  8. My first 2 weekends in March are booked. if a program contacts me now about visiting on those weekends I would have to say no I get there are other things going on, but obviously prospective students are making plans ASAP at this part in the process. The longer the school waits, they hurt themselves along with the prospective student, IMO.
  9. Oh I don't know. Having access to GFDL at Princeton puts you around some great research.
  10. Ranking the programs is tough to do. The NRC rankings are a pretty good rough estimate of quality, though http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124750/ I focused on applying to quality programs where I felt my PhD would be viewed upon favorably and would allow me a decent chance for an academic position. After that, I just wanted to work with various people (Richard Seager was one at Columbia but I doubted my applcation was EES material) so I made my application decisions based on that.
  11. I'm going to approach this question from an atmospheric science prospective since I know nothing about oceanographers. There's a variety of jobs you could do. I'm currently interning at a geoscience consulting firm and our office is filled with PhDs of some sort. There are people who various geoscience modeling and I'm sure this would be a viable job prospect for an atmospheric scientist. There's government work with NOAA, the NWS, USGS, or EPA. I'm sure other organizations too. There are research positions at national labs. There are lots of jobs in energy consulting as well. My career goals involve academia but I am confident that I will have plenty of other options if that does not pan out.
  12. Woooo more atmospheric scientists! Good luck on those schools. They're all top notch. I'm also waiting on UW.
  13. I turned down my UC offer this week. That was tough even if UC was my safety school I think the work I would have done there would have actually been really interesting. I was contacted by Utah earlier this week and I'll be setting up a visit there for Mid March. I'm visiting TAMU in early March, and I declined an opportunity to visit UC Merced as there is very little chance I would attend there after the other offers I've received. Still waiting to hear from Notre Dame, Washington, and Scripps. So, anyone have advice on visitation weekends?
  14. Both programs are top notch and really very selective (Colorado and Colorado State)
  15. Colorado State is arguably the best Atmospheric Science program in the nation so I don't think anyone applying there can be confident of getting in. I think your aerosol interests will fit well with Houston and you probably have a good shot there. I don't know much about Huntsville, Michigan Tech or Maryland, though.
  16. I can't speak for others, but on my initial ranking the school I withdrew my application from was definitely my safety school. I tried to give myself a wide array of options and while there was interesting research being conducted at this school when compared to the other two offers I've received (and the others I hope to get) there's simply no way I would pick it. In retrospect, I maybe shouldn't have applied but they waived my application fee so that probably swayed me a bit. I wasn't all that confident that I was going to get into great school at the start of the process, though. My GPA isn't all that great and my math grades were low, so I think it was prudent to have safety schools.
  17. I did the same with a school on my list that contacted me. I knew there was no way I'd attend there so I told them that. Its a good thing to do as it makes their decision making process simpler instead of waiting for a decline.
  18. Anyone here the person who posted the Scripps admission?
  19. Congrats to those that have received offers! Wander, I don't know about you, but out of your schools Coumbia would def be my top list - especially if you want to do anything hydroclimate related to what Richard Seager has done!
  20. Well that is a bummer but Scripps is Scripps. You do have some other awesome schools on your list so I hope you get some better news from them!
