  1. There is a subtle difference though. For the Stanford program, they require 45 units to complete the program, which is about 15 courses (most of their courses are 3-unit). For the Columbia program, they require 30 points for MSOR (10 courses), 36 points for MSFE (12 courses). Clearly, it would take more coursework to finish Stanford program. Though Stanford is on quarter system, and Columbia is on semester.
  2. What is a "Big State School"?? Cal State system is a big state school, so is Penn State, so is Michigan State, so is Florida State ....
  3. Unfortunately, I am one of the rejections today ... It's ok though. I already have couple great offers....
  4. anything related to U$C is bad.... i'd advise against going to U$C... the reputation is that you can "buy" a degree there..
  5. Well, I guess the doom day is not today then. Because there is no result post for Stanford and I didn't get any notification.
  6. What's the point of sending out rejection and acceptance on separate days? It does not make any sense doing so unless they want to keep the suspense / nervousness longer....
  7. So if I don't get any email from Stanford tomorrow, does that mean I have better chance of getting accepted?
  8. You mean sort of like Harvard / Yale / Princeton people's "pride"... ? But I agree with you though. Having been to both campuses, I agree that you'd see more "pride" (or arrogance if you want to call it that way) at Stanford than at Cal.....
  9. How so? Systems engineering is a completely different animal than Electrical Engineering.
  10. I also have always been wondering how useful is a master degree in systems engineering?
  11. It's interesting that there is very few discussion on OR program that lies in Statistics Department like the one in UNC-Chapel Hill...
  12. I agree with you that the 7 schools you listed are the more reputable schools in OR (I am admitted to Columbia, Michigan, Cornell, GaTech, but rejected by Cal, still waiting on Stanford... ). However, why do you think Princeton admits such few applicants considering its a relatively new program and should be building up its reputation?
  13. They only published master's acceptance %.
  14. Don't worry. I am not offended. I am still waiting on Stanford too. While they have high verbal score, they also have pretty high acceptance % (35% from last year,.. definitely better than Princeton's %). If they turn me down, that's all right. I already have a plan where I am going to accept...
  15. Princeton's grad school official website.
  16. Why should I be concerned? I am applying for Masters, not PhD. And I already received a lot of offers.
  17. I just checked Princeton's ORFE admission data from last year... For MEng, they admitted 0 student out of 43 applicants. (not a typo... ZERO) For MSE, they admitted 2 students out of 27 applicants. For PhD, they admitted 17 students out of 199 applicants. So it's not a shame that we got rejected by Princeton ORFE, they simply don't take that many students.
  18. Q: 770. V: 490. AW: 4.0. GPA: 3.69.
  19. I have a friend who scored 340 in GRE Verbal (800 in Quant) with minimal research experience, and he got accepted into Cornell's Master of Engineering program in Computer Science.
  20. Regarding the cash cow argument, I think you can say the same thing to Stanford and GaTech and Cornell where they have 200+ Master students? But I do agree that MSFE is the crown jewel of Columbia's IEOR department. However, a MSOR degree from Columbia would make you stand out too (if not competing with MSFE people).
  21. I got rejection email from Princeton too. Knowing their extremely small size of the their department, I am not surprised that it's so hard to get in. You probably have to be near perfect on every aspect of your application. I think I am going to request a formal letter from them. I don't like this email communication.
  22. Columbia's MS-OR program has that bad of reputation... ? I think I read somewhere that the best OR programs are MIT, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Cal, Northwestern, GaTech.....
  23. What "top engineering school" did you go to? I find it weird that very few people are willing to be specific about the undergrad school they went to, instead, they use the term, "top engineering school" in their profile... Because I think different people might have different interpretation of "Top Engineering School"...
  24. Then I guess you can say the same thing for Georgia Tech's MS-OR program... it's similar to Columbia's master (high intake, no project required, coursework only). MIT and Princeton have similar similar programs too (but with smaller class size). Actually, a lot of top schools have the coursework only option for their master programs, which target the students who will go into the industries directly after getting the master, and have no intention for phD.
  25. Did you get recommended to Master program by Columbia? I heard that a lot of PhD applicants who get rejected were recommended to Master program by Columbia....
