To answer your enquiry about UNC: I emailed the DGS last week, and he said that there is still hope. They made the first cut for admissions and usually do a wait list. It also seemed like they might be doing a second round, but I'm not holding my breathe for it.

I was wondering how departments feel about 1st years switching subfields? Is it a minor issue or does it mess up the composition of the incoming cohort?
