To answer your enquiry about UNC: I emailed the DGS last week, and he said that there is still hope. They made the first cut for admissions and usually do a wait list. It also seemed like they might be doing a second round, but I'm not holding my breathe for it.

Update on UNC for anyone who's interested: They made a first round of initial decisions, but they usually do a wait list. The DGS mentioned a "first-cut" of admits, so I'm not sure if that means there will be a second round or just the wait list to follow. Apparently, there is still light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi. I was wondering how departments feel about 1st years switching subfields? Is it a minor issue or does it mess up the composition of the incoming cohort?
