  1. I had a friend in undergrad who had a 1 bedroom in The Chateau (I believe that's what it was called? It's right off of 15-501 on Poplar in Carrboro) and her rent was around $600/month. Carrboro/Chapel Hill is very bike/scooter/etc friendly. Hawthorne at the View is under $800 I believe and is closer to Durham. Stratford Hills on MLK is also under $800, and there are a few other apartment complexes on that road to look into.
  2. I work at Duke, and the non-university owned apartments by campus are pretty shady. The Ticon property someone mentioned is nice- I was going to apply to live there, but they didn't have any available units. Further out are Featherstone Village (never been, but know people who like it) and the Phillips Park RTP apartments (about a 10 minute drive to campus). If possible, I recommend you get a car- public transportation in Durham isn't very good, and it's not as easy to get around the triangle via bus. I actually ended up living in Chapel Hill by the outskirts of Durham, since I travel a lot between Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro.
  3. I'm also in a similar situation, so I'll relay some advice I got from a professor I talked to last night. In terms of the ranking (this is for U.S. PhD programs, so I don't know how much it applies for Canadian schools), he mentioned that although it shouldn't matter, it often does make a difference to admissions committees what the ranking of your MA school was. He also suggested that I contact the schools individually to let them know that another program has offered me funding/a stipend, and see if they can work with me in that sense- so you can always contact the prestigious school and see if they can work with you! You've done the hard work of getting in, so they are now the ones who have to convince you to pick them. The worst they can say is that they can't offer you more money.
  4. Congrats to everyone who got into Yale, Harvard, and Stanford! Any ideas on USC vs UW vs UMich? I'm leaning towards Seattle (Ann Arbor in second place), but still waiting to hear about scholarships and stuff...
  5. I didn't end up applying to Duke since the department told me they wouldn't notify people of FLAS and such until May, and I can't commit to $90,000 tuition either! Though I'm also just tired of the area since I work at Duke and went to UNC for undergrad, so I need a change of scenery anyways. Still waiting to hear from USC!
  6. Most of the professors I've met in the Duke Ed department are UNC SoE grads!
  7. I'd like to go to the visit weekend, but it depends on if they are able to give me some of the travel funds they mentioned. I've contacted them for more info! I'm in NC so I'd have to fly in.
  8. I've heard back from Berkeley (reject), UW JSIS- China Studies (admit) and Michigan- China studies (admit). Still waiting to hear from USC, and also waiting to hear about financial aid, FLAS, etc! UW and Michigan are my top 2, though.
  9. I'm a state Americorps member in North Carolina. There are SO many Americorps programs that are so different from each other, that it's tough to compare them! I work with a literacy program at a university, and mostly interact with students, tutors, and community partners. Other programs allow you to work on organic farms, clear hiking trails, work in homeless shelters or with people with disabilities... there are tons of programs to choose from. Since I work at a university, I'm getting a good look at what goes on behind the scenes in university departments while also doing service. The different trainings that Americorps requires I go to are also great for professional development. Best of all, you get an education stipend at the end which you can use for grad school (though it will only put a very slight dent in the cost, it's better than nothing!) I won't lie, living on the stipend is tough. They encourage you to get on food stamps and government assistance to get by. There is also a ton of annoying red tape and paperwork due to Americorps being such a big program run by so many different departments. However, I still think that the trouble is worth the experience.
