  1. To those still waiting and thinking forward to reapplying during the next application cycle, I just wanted to say this is my third time applying for a PhD. So hang in there and try not to stress about reapplying next year. Last year it felt like everyone on GC in the TAPS thread got accepted their first time applying and it definitely caused me some negative feelings. Don't give up hope yet, there's still time and like MintBrad says, it's not over until it's over! MintBrad, I would find it hard to believe that having an M.A. in Education would hold you back. Are you currently teaching at the high school level? One of the people I interviewed with out at Stanford last year was a high school teacher, during his interview some big name professors in the department told him they were nervous about his lack of research experience. He got in though. I think it has more to do with the application material than credentials sometimes, such as that one poster getting into Berkeley and having two masters not related to theatre or performance. As far as M.A.s in the US that are funded, I don't really know much. Part of why I did my masters in the UK was because it seemed the cost was equal or less than the cost of a masters in the US.
  2. Mocha Earl, I don't know where I was on the wait list, but I can say that the attached acceptance letter has a paragraph at the bottom about making a decision by the deadline of April 8th, but would appreciate a decision as soon as possible because they have a long wait list. From past results postings for this program I didn't expect to hear until April, which makes me think 'very high' means either 1 or 2 on the wait list. But who knows if there is a difference between 'very high' and 'high'? MorneQuelquun, Thank you! I'm still a little in shock. Being on the wait list was such an emotional roller coaster. Hang in there everyone!
  3. Yes! Mocha Earl that was my post! Got the email from Dr Rossen just before 9 pm yesterday, but since I'm not checking my email constantly I didn't see it until almost midnight. Was so surprised, honestly. I had practically moved on and started transitioning to my back up plan. Fingers still crossed for you!
  4. Hi MochaEarl, my email did also say I'm very high on the list and that people have been admitted off the wait list in the past. Keeping fingers crossed. Good luck on your Northwestern interview!
  5. Just got an email notifying me I'm on the wait list for UT Austin. Only "offer" I've got so I really hope those admitted choose to go elsewhere.
  6. I'm checking my email constantly waiting for an email from UT. I saw someone posted a rejection on the results search and so I checked on UT's website and I'm still "in review". I know during my interview Dr. Rossen said mid- to late-February, which it most definitely is now!
  7. MintBrad, your research interests sound so interesting! I'm also interested in mass performance and culture, specifically performance and activism. The research I've proposed this round of PhD applications is focused on performance and performativity within the current feminist movement to end sexual assault and domestic violence. I want to look at the intersection of cyber/digital/online performance (i.e. hashtag feminism, blogging, YouTube, Facebook) and RL performance (anything ranging from protests to traditional theatre performances like the V-Day campaign). Right now I'm working on a paper (titled "Hashtag Feminism and the Fight to End Violence") for a conference in Utrecht in April. My background is in Staging Shakespeare (in a feminist or queer way) and my experience with Performance Studies and PaR is UK-based as my two masters are from schools in England. I've got an MFA in Theatre Practice from the University of Exeter which was very practice-based and an MA in Performance Research from the University of Bristol which covered all manner of theatre and performance studies research. There I focused mainly on theatre historiography, which I still see as an important part of my research methodologies even when focusing on performance studies. I find it important to place my research in a historical context before being able to move forward. So I'm not sure if my approach is more Northwestern PS or NYU PS. Good question Bacchanalia, can't wait to hear more about everyone's interests!
  8. Welcome to the thread chottosassy! Good luck with your QMUL interview. I have two masters from the UK and would be happy to answer any questions about the differences in pedagogy or UKBA visa processes. I applied to Brown last year and heard back (rejection) the first week of February (the 4th to be precise). Good luck!!
  9. I got my rejection from Berkeley earlier today as well. Fingers crossed for you on Stanford MintBrad!
  10. Bacchanalia, I'd keep my eyes peeled for signs of issues similar to problems you've had at other institutions. Like your second question about PaR, I'm assuming you want PaR to be part of your methodology. If they've got lots of good rehearsal space, a good system to book rooms, and lots of student and faculty led projects going on. I'm sure you've notified the department you're coming for a visit. Sitting in on classes and getting to talk to current students will be on the top of my list once I get admitted somewhere. I have a few pages full of questions I asked UT before applying based on the shortfalls of the department where I did my MFA. I know what I don't want (emphasis on undergrads' praxis; no departmental support for extra grad projects) and focused on finding out if the department I'm applying to (or choosing to go to in your case) has those issues or not. I hope that helps. During my phone interview Dr Rossen told me its 80 down in Austin. That sure forced Northwestern down to the bottom of my wish list!!
  11. MintBrad, I'm putting all my optimistic energy into us getting on the wait list for Berkeley!!
  12. This may not mean a guaranteed spot. Schools/departments with more funding are able to bring their short list to campus. Last year I attended a prospective weekend at Stanford, with all expenses paid. They brought out 9 students and only accepted 4. (I was not one of them). So it is a good sign, but you will still be interviewing and under review. Best of luck!!
  13. MochaEarl, I only spoke to Dr. Rossen. The interview lasted just under 30 minutes. My MFA is in Theatre Practice with a specialization in Staging Shakespeare. And, I agree with MochaEarl and Bacchanalia, this thread is helping! Thanks for all the good vibes all and right back atcha!
  14. Now that my UT interview is over I'm starting the dreaded replaying of every moment of the interview in my mind, an also on the phone with my mom, via text with my boss, and in person with my partner. Dr. Rossen said those who interview will probably hear back around mid- to late-February. So another month of overanalyzing my interview?! MochaEarl, Let me know what questions you have. I'm happy to help, although I'm not sure how much overlap there will be between MA and PhD interview expectations. I had to answer specific questions about the form my dissertation would take, i.e. how much would be performance/practice-based. This could have been specific to my experience using practice-based research during my MFA. I was also asked about if I'd read faculty bios, specifically those whose interested overlapped with mine. I hope this is helpful. Don't stress! I was so nervous and excited I rambled a bit when talking about my research goals. Good luck tomorrow, and I'll try to answer any question you've got. Bacchanalia, Congrats!!! One acceptance down, (hopefully) a couple more to go (fingers crossed). When do you expect to hear from CUNY and UCI?
  15. MochaEarl, Good luck with your interview tomorrow. Mine is today (I'm not available during the days they set aside for interviews so I get to do mine early, yey!?). Originally it was scheduled for 11:30 CST but has just been pushed back to 3:15 CST. Dr. Rossen didn't indicate how long the conversation would last. I'm most nervous about what questions I should ask. Since I have already had a long conversation with Dr. Rossen about the program I've had most every question answered. If anyone is on the thread today and can give some suggestions of questions to ask, it would be much appreciated! Questions I've asked already have been about performance opportunities, opportunities to take classes in other departments, teaching requirements/opportunities, and funding. I've also asked "Now that we've had a chance to talk more do you think the program is a good fit for my research and goals?", which is kind of like asking "do I get the job now?". Today I'm planning to ask specifically about how the Program of Study is created (UT Austin has you create your own mid-way through the first semester) and if there is any opportunity to organize a conference on my area of interest (performance and activism). But other ideas and questions are welcome! Hive mind! MintBrad, I'll be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the Skype interview or Stanford's interview weekend. Fingers crossed you get an invite soon! Re: Berkeley I saw someone posted on the Results Search they got an acceptance to Berkeley last week. Is that you? Last year I got my rejection from Berkeley on the last Friday of January, so we've still got a few more days to see if we're wait listed perhaps? Bacchanalia, Thanks for the well wishes. If I get accepted I will be asking you lots of questions. Don't want to get my hopes up too high about moving to warm, weird Austin!
