Hi Forum, My major is structural engineering. I applied to 7 universities and I was offered RA by university of Minnesota twenty days after submitting the application. I talked to the admission administrator of Northwestern university and he said that I need to communicate with the POI's I have listed in my application to see if they are willing to offer me a project to work on. What I can suggest to you guys is that talk to the POI's you have mentioned in your applications. If you are in the US, go and see them. Otherwise, send them email. Study in-depth about their ongoing projects before any communication and focus on two or three universities you feel that you have more chance to be admitted in. Good luck.
