  1. Hi Im starting my program in just a couple of weeks and I have read some great comments here already. But I was wondering if there is any specific advise for someone in the Humanities. I saw some mentioning it a little already. I see a lot of info about labs and stuff but I won't have that, so I was just hoping someone specifically in the Humanities could give some advice.
  2. Im also an international student. I was worried about housing. I guess my luck is that the graduate housing offered by the university looks like it is very convenient. I am thinking of just doing that for the first year and start looking for my own place for year 2 while Im there. But I also had one of the current graduate students of my program give me her email address and told me she would check the place out if I found something and I was not sure. She was an international student herself so she said she knew the feeling.
  3. It seems like Im heading to Chicago for a PhD at the Oriental Institute
  4. Im at the point of doing this myself. My SO and I have been living apart during Undergrad in two different countries. Mainly because he has a job in our home country and I went somewhere else for undergrad. It is very doable and we speak to each other every day keeping each other up to date about the most basic things in life. But now we will be moving together for grad school. This is mainly because the time difference will be 7 hours which makes it a lot harder to actually speak to each other and visiting isn't easy either. I have to say Im a bit nervous because we havent really lived together even though we have been together for 6 years now. And I know he is nervous about giving up his job while he has been the provider for the last 6 years. But we are also very exciting to be making this move together . Im glad to see other people are going through the same
  5. Hi I am sorry if this came up before I looked around and I only found topics about F-1 visa interviews. I was wondering what the J-1 visa interview was like. I can imagine there being some questions about why you choose the J-1 instead of the more common F-1. My reason to go for the J-1 as for most I think is the fact that my SO can get a job when he moves with me to the states. However the international affairs office of the school I was accepted to said I should make sure not to give the idea I am taking this visa because of the work options. So I was just wondering if others have any experience with this issue
  6. yeah still waiting. I only heard from one of my schools yet :-/ My subfield is Egyptology
  7. Okay, I'll send them an email explaining the situation and hopefully I can go and visit on another day
  8. So I'm kinda new here. I have been offered a place at one of my top choice universities and I got an invite for their visiting day which I really want to attend. But I really can't make that day. I am part of a musical production in which I play one of the leads and our show dates are precisely at that time. Do you think it would be okay to ask them if I can come another day? I have visited the department last year when I was looking into different schools so I am not sure if visiting again on my own would be so different. I'm a bit lost on this one............ Would anyone drop the musical and give up the lead to go to visiting day or still visit another day on your own? Or maybe even not visit at all?
  9. I was looking around on the website and I havent seen a lot of NELC information about the ancient languages. I was just wondering if there are people around who have heard something already from any of the NELC departments?
  10. I did not mention anyone in particular but I did mention a certain project
