  1. Hey, I am heading to UT Dallas as well (for the PhD program in Operations Management). I emailed a grad student in my program and he said, university village is better in terms of facilities and space, but of course is priced higher. He stays at waterview and according to him, its just fine as well. I applied for Waterview and am on a wait list. The one recurring advice about off campus housing I got is- to stay away from apartments on McCallum. That grad student also suggested a couple of apartments off-campus :courtyards at campbell and marquis at waterview.
  2. I see. I finally got rejected by them today. So I am relieved in a sense. Thanks for the information though.
  3. Sorry for the late response. I am waiting to hear back from George Mason and another university I applied to in Turkey. I would be able to decide then. I spoke to a student in UNC, who told me that he has not seen anyone going jobless in the last 3 yrs. So in the worst case I will go to UNC (ironic because it is the best school on my list). About the deposit, I am going to talk to them today and see what they say. I will post what they tell me.
  4. Just wanted to if anybody heard back from UIUC's IESE program. Its been months and I have not heard anybody getting accepted or rejected by them. If anybody has any information about whats going on, please do let me know. Thanks
  5. Hey I got into the MS OR program in UNC Chapel Hill aswell and yeah its true that they do not offer financial aid to any MS students.
  6. I applied to the PhD program in OR at UNC Chapel Hill, haven't heard back from them yet. Did you apply to the MS or PhD program ? Also if you don't mind could you share your background. I just saw the last post which says they accept very few PhD students every year. Unfortunately, its probably the best research fit I have in the US! About myself, I got my B.Tech. from DAIICT, India in 2008 and am currently pursuing final semester of MS in applied mathematics at Indiana Purdue University Indianapolis. My UG GPA is bad and not sure how much my graduate GPA could make up for it. Anyway, I would be happy to hear back from you.
  7. i think you have a great profile, so do not worry too much about it. What areas are you interested in OR? Even otherwise getting into the top notch programs would depend upon how well your interests match with the faculty interests at that university and if you have found a potential adviser. This might not be absolutely necessary but it always helps. If you can try contacting the faculty you are interested in working with before hand, and if they do respond positively, there is nothing more assuring than that. Aas far as I know UNC Chapel Hill does not need Subject Math. The list of universities you have is great. I am assuming you are applying mostly to industrial engineering departments. GaTech is definitely the best ranked university, but Cornell and Columbia have really good programs too. You might want to check up on UCB, U of Michigan as well. have you sent your applications yet?
  8. Hi Alvarom, I really appreciate your comments on my profile. I must say, you have a solid background(Imperial is a big name to have). My undergraduate GPA is kind of screwed up, which I believe is going to hit my applications really hard. But anyway, it seems to me like your interests are more towards the OR programs offered by the managements schools, is it ? please correct me if I am wrong. Your list looks really good but if you can segregate it based on your expectations (easy to get in, difficult and ambitious) and research interests, it would be a little helpful to analyze. Like I mentioned before I am focusing on queueing theory and my list of schools are (the segregation is obvious :-)) George Mason University University of Massachusetts- Amherst. Boston University University of Minnesota University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Rutgers Ohio State University TAMU Virginia Tech. University of Illinois Urbana
  9. Hi I am applying to Operations Research Programs for Fall 2010. I am focusing on schools with a strong background in areas of applied probability(stochastic processes, queueing theory etc). Glad to finally meet someone applying to OR. I am super nervous about the schools i have shortlisted. My background: I have an Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from India in 2008. Currently am pursuing MS in Applied Mathematics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. GPA UG:6.9/10 , first class graduate: 3.33/4(would be 3.5 by the end of this fall) GRE Q:790 V:380 W:4.0 TOEFL 110/120 1 intl conference proceedings, 1 poster at an annual meeting, 1 book chapter - for all of which i am the first author. Good recommendations from people in relevant areas. ------------------------ what about you?
  10. Hi al, I would be applying to the OR programs for the Fall 2010. I have a keen interest in applied probability and especially stochastic process and queueing theory. I have a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from India and I am currently pursuing MS in Applied Mathematics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. My background is as follows: GPA UG:6.9/10(first class) Masters:3.33/4(it would be 3.5 by the end of this fall) GRE V:380 Q:790 W:4.0 TOEFL 110/120 1 intl. conference proceedings, 1 poster and 1 book chapter- for all of which i am the first author. I have a decent amount of research exp at undergraduate and graduate level but not directly related to OR. My recommendations would also be good. here is a tentative list of universities I plan to apply to: -Boston University, Systems Engg. PhD -George Mason University, Systems Engg and OR -The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, OR -GaTech. IE -Virginia Tech.- IE -TAMU -The Ohio State University -Rutgers I would really appreciate any comments/suggestions you could have for me. It really feels good to see people discussing OR somewhere!
