  1. Hi all!

I've been accepted at 2 schools but I still haven't heard from my top one. They interviewed me 2 months ago and they didn't wait-list me or anything. I was there doing an intership last summer so I know everyone on the committee and they have always been really nice. I sent them an email 2 weeks ago asking if I still have some option or I should assume the rejection at this point. They never replied.

As April 15th is getting closer, should I accept at my second choice and forget about it? You think is there any possibility of being accepted at my top school at this point?  Really hate this situation.

call them. They might give a generic answer like we will let you know in the upcoming weeks. Tell them you need to make a decision soon.

  2. Finally heard back (rejection) from Vanderbilt... still waiting (rather impatiently) from Wake Forest and Case Western. Although at this point, I feel like I should just start narrowing down what I have. Did anyone else hear of $100 + deposits required when they accepted their spot at a program? Drexel requires it, and that makes me feel kinda weird about the school as a whole... Still have to visit there and Purdue before I can make any decisions though.

I have an offer from Drexel without any information on funding (eye roll) and was asked for the $100 deposit if I accept the offer. My friend who got accepted at USciences also did not receive any info on funding but was asked to pay $150 as deposit. Is it some kind of a Philadelphia thing?

  3. It is a little bit weird of them to quote your grade.

But on the other hand, it is good to know the exact reason.

For me, pretending to be gentle like "we have unprecedented number of applicants...." is even worse.

I had one that ended with "We hope this does not dissuade you from pursuing graduate studies. " I mean seriously!

  4. When selecting the school you will be attending from among your offers, how would you rank the following criteria?

    brand of the school

    project of interest

    connections of the faculty

feedback from existing students which include information about how the PIs help students with their future placements in industry or as post doc.

also, if you want to add any other factors that would influence your decision, please feel free to do so.

BTW, rejection from Stony Brook Molecular Genetics and acceptances from universities at Buffalo and Rochester on the same day!

  5. WHAT!? I got my interview on 10th Feb and I still didn't got any news from them

BTW, what program did you apply?

I applied to the Immunology program. A PI I mentioned in my SOP was very interested during the interview itself. I guess that is why a quick offer. They did say though during the interview that they would take two to three weeks to make the decision. Also, because I will have to accept the offer first and then obtain I20 for visa processing stuff so it makes sense that the offer was made out early because the process will be longer for an international student.

  6. Just received a rejection from MD Anderson. Not surprise at all. However, please give one, just one offer and that will be great

I know, right? I have an offer  from Drexel University but no information about funding and what is PhD without funding? Baffles me why they would even hand out such offer!

BTW, I have heard back from Roswell Park today and my interview is scheduled Feb 20th. It is a skype interview with a faculty I mentioned in my SOP. When was yours? I wonder if this is the final week with only skype interviews.

  7. I've only had one interview but the ones with adcom members were actually more geared toward answering questions about the city and the program. The only time I was remotely close to being grilled was when a professor wasn't familiar with my research and was genuinely interested, but he wasn't on the adcom as far as I know. I got the vibe that people were recruiting more so than trying to pick people off, but that will vary at different programs.

Thank you. That was helpful information. The interview is over and I felt they did not know anything of my background. Which is okay considering they are interviewing many candidates. I have no idea what impression I made because they just said very casually that I will be notified later. I think some of my answers were not really up to the mark. Maybe I am over thinking. I have had only one interview before this and the interviewer who was the program director had said they are pretty excited about my application and hopefully will be able to make an offer. But that is from my backup university. This is the real one I want to get into.

My adcom member interviews were like this as well. It was clearly more of a recruitment interview than anything else, and we talked a little bit about science, but mostly about the program itself. That said, I'm sure it's different with different programs.

  8. and I just sat through an adcom interview where no one had any idea of my background and were pushing the laptop towards each other as if no were were interested to talk to me. To top it all I am thinking I have said the stupidest stuffs. It is 2 in the morning here and I hope they see this is not a very convenient time to have a straight head. aaagggghhhhhh

  9. Just did an interview with a portion of the AdCom from Syracuse Genetics this morning.  It was just a prof and a student rep.  Went exactly like a regular interview, asked me about research, why I'd like to go to SU, etc.  Then they gave me a chance to ask.  It was about 20 minutes and they said they'd be in touch in the near future.  You'll do fine!  They'll speak one at a time to you, not like an all out attack :)

Edit:  I actually did an in person with Rochester Genetics, Genomics, Development 2 weekends ago.  Everyone there was extremely nice!

Thank you MackF. This is reassuring! I have been emailed the names of five faculty of the adcomm and have been told that they will be interviewing me in a group and it should be of 45 mins tops.

Hi, I had one with Edinburgh with five people via Skype last week. They asked me to present my project for 10 min and then then they started to questions. Since they come from different background, the questions are general and you do not need to worry about the details about science. Just consider why you are interested in the specific field, what you like to do for your PhD and after that, why you choose this school etc. Relax and you will be good. Good luck!

Thanks SysEvo. Did they tell you previously that you'll need to prepare a ppt of your project?
