dgswaim got a reaction from philosophia14 in Acceptance Thread
Nothing has happened. This, it seems to me, is exactly the problem.
Wish they'd hurry up and send me my rejection notice... jeez...

I was fortunate to do a BA at a liberal arts school in a small department where 3 of the six professors were analytic guys and the other three were primarily continental thinkers. I lean analytic, but I have a healthy respect for certain thinkers in the continental tradition (esp. Hussurl, Ricouer, Gadamer and Levinas). I tend to feel that the analytic-continental divide is a rather useless way to think about philosophy. To do philosophy that's worth anything I think one ought to be conversant with both traditions.

I was wondering which adult beverages all you applicants out there prefer as a personal prescription for stress management (for those of you who partake in the use of intoxicating beverages, that is).
I find that when I'm at a medium level of stress, I go for craft beers. When it gets to be really bad, I go straight for the overproofed bourbons.

I just got a form email from a school I did not apply to asking me to apply. My heart almost stopped because the more reptilian part of my brain thought it was a meaningful email from a school I DID apply to. Damn you, spammers.

Maybe it isn't you...maybe it's me. Either way, it just isn't working between us. I'm looking to settle down with someone I can relate to.

Well...my sister's friend brought me a whole bottle of ouzo just for funsies. Looks like I'm drinking Greek liquor tonight.

I don't know if Avicenna says this, but Averroes says something like this in his On the Harmony of Religion and Philosophy.
Avicenna, Averroes, Alfarabi, Al Kindi, Augustine, Aquinas, Abelard... why so many A's? (I know, I know, the "al" is the direct article in Arabic--there are just a lot of medieval A's)
I was also told once by Jeff Brower that the greatest proof for the existence of God was the existence of Thomas Aquinas (a joke at the time, but this argument might actually have some merit--the man was amazing. I don't remember the exact numbers, but someone calculated the amount he wrote [i think it was Fred Freddoso] and claimed that if you averaged out his lifespan with the number of words he wrote, it comes out to somewhere near 2,000 words a day.)
Good call on Swinburne. He is, methodologically, one of my favorite philosophers also. I'm not really fond of a lot of his ideas and reasons for backing them (esp. his work on simplicity & aseity), but the man is a philosophy machine. His the Existence of God is perhaps the best--methodologically--work in philosophy I have read (excepting, maybe, Spinoza's Ethics). If you come to Purdue, we're having the big Swinburne retirement conference there this fall--it's going to be awesome.

I actually didn't mention anyone specifically in my application. I opted, rather, to appeal to ND's overall fit with respect to my research interests as a Christian philosopher looking to do philosophy from within a Christian framework. Needless to say, there are countless people with whom I would be thrilled to study under at ND on the off chance that I'm admitted. I'd love to sit and chat with Gary Gutting... even though he doesn't really work in my area.

Very cool. My writing sample was on the relationship between the realism/anti-realism debate and philosophical naturalism. Sounds like we share quite a bit in common.

I feel your pain, I promise you. I can only speak for myself (so take it for what it's worth), but I've not heard anything from Notre Dame one way or the other as of yet. I wait anxiously...
