I'm so glad to hear everything worked out for you as well! Congratulations! It's kind of nice to have someone else on here going to Boulder, too! So far I'm enrolled in three classes: Topics in Latin Poetry (LATN 5044), Topics in Art and Archaeology (CLAS 5169), and The Roman Republic (CLAS 5081). Have you enrolled in classes yet? I'm super excited, but I definitely understand feeling nervous!

I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who has to wait until the end of May/June to go look...It's definitely been kind of difficult so far because so many places seem to be available now and aren't open to pre-leasing... As far as the actual housing search goes, I'd also advise checking padmapper. I've been using it and been finding it very helpful, since you can save places and it gives you results from craigslist and a couple of other sites!

Cybelle- Awesome! I'm definitely attending too- just paid my deposit today! Funnily enough, Colorado is one of the only states I haven't been to...I haven't been able to visit yet unfortunately, but it looks lovely from the pictures, and I'm hoping to fly out for a short visit to scout out some apartments at the end of May. My SO will be joining me in Colorado, so we're primarily looking for 1 bedroom/studio apartments. Were are you from?

Well, my waitlist saga has come to an end. Rejection from Michigan, and funding declined by Florida State. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear! I hope you get better news!

I'm bumping this thread. I'm almost certainly attending CU Boulder this fall. I'm going to be doing the MA program in Classics, and I'd love to get in contact with anyone else who's going to be attending, regardless of program! It would be nice to get to know some people before arriving!

I'm still waiting to hear from an actual waitlist and a waitlist on funding at another program...

Still nothing from one school--ask for an extension?
aurora_nova replied to CarmenEBrady's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I understand the indecision, as I'm in the same boat. It couldn't hurt to ask for an extension- the worst they can say is no, and in that case, it sounds as though you know what you should do. -
Accepted by department, then rejected by graduate school?
aurora_nova replied to kittyk's topic in Waiting it Out
Thanks! I hope you hear from the grad school soon! I would really think that unless there's a major issue you'll be admitted, but I understand completely wanting to be cautious! Let us know how it turns out! -
My first coping mechanism was to contact the program and try to get an update, but I'm not sure that helped much, as you can see from my previous post. The program wouldn't tell me where exactly I am on the waitlist, just that there's quite a few people before me, so while I have a little bit of a better idea, it still seems like it's up in the air and dependent on who accepts and who declines. I'm betting at this point that I probably won't hear anything before April 15th. So...on to coping mechanism #2: eat copious amounts of chocolate (and maybe through some wine drinking in there as well), hope for a better funding offer from one of my accepted programs so my decision will be easier, and overall try not to think about the waitlist issue until I'm forced to make the decision in about a week and a half...

Just got an email from the program I'm waitlisted at in response to my asking for an update. The graduate program coordinator said that unfortunately there are a lot of people on the wait list, and my chances are "not very strong at this stage." It's my top choice program, so I'm feeling pretty bummed right now, and I still have the April 15th deadline to consider for one of the programs I was admitted to. It definitely feels like a giant game of chicken.

Accepted by department, then rejected by graduate school?
aurora_nova replied to kittyk's topic in Waiting it Out
Hi kittyk- So I actually just recently had this happen to me! I was contacted by the graduate admissions director for the department I applied to and told that the department was offering me admission and had forwarded the decision to the graduate school, and that I should expect to hear officially from the graduate soon after. Two weeks later, I hadn't heard anything, and upon logging into the online system, I saw I was rejected. I ended up calling the department and the graduate school admissions office, and after a lot of waiting and phone tag, I found out that the rejection notice was due to a clerical error. So in my case, it ended up that I was actually admitted. From everything I was told and read while panicking, it seems really rare. -
Hi all! I've been admitted to UC-Boulder, and right now it's my top choice to attend in the fall! I've never been to Boulder (or Colorado), and since I'm from Rhode Island, it would be a pretty big move for me. My SO is planning to come with me, and I've started looking at apartments in the area to get an idea about prices. I was glad to see from the earlier posts that the transportation system is good, because it looks I may end up living in one of the suburbs. Does anyone have any advice for moving to Boulder and finding an affordable apartment? I'd really like to stay under $900 a month with utilities if possible, since I only have a small stipend right now, and my SO will need to find a job. Is late May/early June too late to fly out to look at potential apartments? I see that a lot of people are already starting to lease for fall. Also, are there any areas that aren't so great to live in? I see from an earlier post that Longmont has a higher crime rate, but how bad is it? Since my SO also needs to find a job, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the economic situation is? Is it possible to find a job in the area? My SO is not really a school person, so he only has an associate's. He's thinking about taking online courses to earn a certificate or bachelor's. Any advice would be appreciated!

Waiting for official letter of acceptance
aurora_nova replied to geographyrocks's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I was accepted to one program more than a month ago, and I'm still waiting on my formal acceptance letter from the graduate school, as well. My wait is partially due to a clerical error that resulted in the graduate school listing me as a rejection, though. I hope everyone gets their letters soon! -
I'm in a similar situation. I too am waitlisted at my top choice program, and have been accepted to another program with funding. It's not full funding, but it's the only funding I've gotten, and I need some kind of funding in order to attend. I haven't heard anything from the program I was waitlisted at since they informed me in February, and even then if I had not emailed to check on my status, I may not have even found out that I'd been waitlisted. Since the April 15th deadline is approaching soon, I emailed the program again this past week to find out if there was any update on the situation. I really don't want to have to make a decision without knowing if there's any chance I might get in to my top choice program, but at the same time, unless anything changes between now and April 15th, I don't think I can turn down the offer with funding, unless I decide that I'm okay with not going to grad school right away. I really can't say what's best for you to do. The only advice I can offer is that you may want to email or call the program and ask for an update, and if you are dependent on funding for attending grad school, you may want to accept the offer from your second choice if you don't hear from your first choice by April 15th. If on the off chance you accept and do get accepted at your first choice, you may still have the option to back out of your enrollment, depending on the school. From what I've read, it's not necessarily considered good form, and you'll probably lose any deposit you put down, but it does happen. Anyway, I understand the feeling. Hang in there!

Thanks again for the PM! Got my decision on Columbia today, so now I'm just waiting for Johns Hopkins and Michigan (and funding at FSU)... There may be hope, yet.

Kingharvest- Do you mean the IPCAA or Classical Studies?

I had that thought too, but unfortunately contacting them didn't help that much. I emailed both of the programs I'm still waiting to hear from this past week, and I've been in contact with the other program I was accepted to about funding. Both of the programs I'm waiting on said they're still processing applications. One of them implied that they're pretty sure I won't be accepted, so I'm considering that one as a likely rejection, but the other gave no indication either way. As for the program that I'm waiting on to hear about funding, they're still waiting for those they accepted with funding to turn down offers before they can offer funding to the others, and there's no way to tell when that will be. The program I was waitlisted at had an open house for accepted students last weekend, and they indicated that they would know more about the status of those waitlisted after that. I haven't yet heard from them, so I'll be emailing them today or tomorrow to find out more.

This could belong in this forum or the decisions forum, really, but I decided to post it here. As of right now, I have 2 acceptances, 1 wait-list, and 2 rejections, with 2 more decisions in limbo. One of my acceptances is unfunded, but the other recently offered some not half bad funding in the form of a teaching assistantship that comes with a stipend and a tuition waver for 6 credit hours a semester, plus an addition $1500 fellowship for the year. The funded program is toward the top of my list, but I'm feeling pretty anxious over what I should do. The April 15th deadline is coming up pretty soon, and I need to respond to the funded offer by then in order to be guaranteed the funding. At the same time, I have not heard anything more from the program I've been waitlisted at, the two programs I've yet to receive decisions from are still(!) processing applications, and there is still the possibility of funding at the other program I was accepted to. Logically, I know my best option is to take the funded offer if the April 15th deadline gets here and I don't hear from any of the other programs. It's so frustrating though, not knowing all of the options before having to make a decision. Is anyone else having this problem???
-
I'm still waiting for two schools, and it's very frustrating. One had a deadline in early January (like January 3rd) and the other was January 15th. After not hearing anything from either school, I finally emailed both of them this week, because I've gotten acceptances from two other programs and need to figure out where I'm going fairly soon. They both got back to me within a couple of days, but the replies were not very helpful. Both are still in the process of reviewing applications(!), although at least one did say that they were pretty sure I wouldn't be accepted. I'm a little bummed after getting that email, because I had good hopes for that program, but I can't feel too bad about it because it was worded pretty rudely... I'm just hoping I get official decisions some time in the next two weeks, before I have to give a decision on the program that's offered me funding...
-
I'm going to apologize, because it is very possible that I am now one of the people holding you up (although I hope not). I too was waitlisted for funding at UC-Boulder, but I was just informed yesterday that I've been offered a teaching assistantship. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to accept the offer until fairly late, as I'm still waiting to hear back from several places, both about decisions and funding. At the moment, UC-Boulder is my only funded offer of acceptance, so I will be accepting if I do not hear from elsewhere by the April 15th deadline. I will second your reminder to everyone who has been accepted and either knows for sure where they are going to attend or has decided that a certain program is out of the running, that they please inform the program they know they will not be attending about their decision to decline! In my case I was also accepted to the FSU MA program and am waiting to hear about funding, so please for anyone who is sitting on a funded offer at FSU and knows they will not be going, let the program know as soon as possible. I heard from the director of graduate admissions that they have so far only had one acceptance of funded offers and no declines, and so funding for everyone waiting remains up in the air.
-
So after a very stressful last couple of days in which I played phone tag with the director of graduate admissions for the Classics department, I am happy to report that the situation is resolved! I finally broke down and called the FSU admissions office when I failed yet again to get in contact with the actual department, and after spending half an hour on hold, I was told that I was indeed admitted and due to a "clerical error" the decision on my application was mistakenly submitted as a rejection. They said it will take about a week to fix my status, but I'm just glad that's over with and I'm no longer stuck in limbo! Thanks everyone! I really hope that no one ever has to go through this!

I called, but am still waiting to hear back... C&S- The thing is I didn't get an attachment with Dr. Romano's email. He said that I was accepted to the department and the committee was forwarding their decision to the graduate school, and I should receive notification soon. Unfortunately, two weeks have passed since then and I haven't heard anything, and then I saw the rejection on the online login. So I'm very worried that for some reason I was accepted by the department only to be rejected by the graduate school, or that perhaps he accidentally contacted me in error. I've emailed and called him, but so far I haven't gotten a reply. I didn't think about contacting the admissions office, but I think that will be my next step. I'd love to attend the open house, but because of scheduling and finances, I can't make it...perhaps it's a good thing with everything that's going on. It would be very awkward if I were to attend but found out I wasn't actually accepted...
-
No reply yet, unfortunately, and the wait is killing me. I do believe that the director included his number in the previous email he sent to me, so if I haven't received a reply by email by the time I'm done with classes tomorrow, I'll give him a call. I can't wait another full day. I appreciate all of the advice and support.

...I hadn't thought about that. I do have a pretty common last name, so I'm hoping that's not the case... I think I would rather have the last name mix-up. With my luck, it could be either case though...guess I'll just have wait and see.
