  1. Hi everyone! I'm in Toronto (Etobicoke) and my letter arrived today. I was successful, with a score of 16.2/20 on Committee 2. Last year I scored 10.8/20 on the same committee and was (obviously) not successful. The only difference in my application this year was a reference letter from someone new, an OGS and some other awards, a publication that changed from forthcoming to published, and a few minor tweaks fleshing out the contemporary relevance of my work. All the core content remained the same.

Something kind of interesting: The envelope I received last year informing me I was not successful was small, but the one I received this year was "booklet" sized. It might be because the letter comes with a Notice of Award breaking down the amount/year and is on legal-sized paper. I don't know if this means anything, but I thought I'd share it with you all anyways.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

  2. So, after doing more in-depth research, my list has shrunk a bit to Harvard, Brown, UCBerk, UChicago, and UToronto. I'm... moderately intimidated by this list. I've gone only for professors who were very near my area of interest, but I've ended up with a short list of heavy hitters. Two questions:

    1) Does anyone have any tips on how to not freak out about this?

    2) The UCB program says it takes a history cohort of 32-40. This seems absurdly large. Is this perception accurate, and can anyone here comment on how the cohort size influences the internal department dynamic?

Hey, current PhD at UofT. Message me if you have any questions!

  3. I'll be applying for PhD programs in Colonial North American/Aboriginal history, esp women's history. I'm considering applying to: York, McGill, Queen's, UWO, BC, UVic, Saskatoon.  I might apply to some American schools, too, I haven't decided yet.

If you have any questions about Queen's I just finished my MA there!

  4. If you e-mail them, let us know. Also waiting on Western, and have to respond to another offer in just over a week. Sigh.

I emailed them and the graduate chair let me know that they are meeting tomorrow to discuss applications. He also said that since I emailed, he could rush my application and let me know by 3:30 tomorrow if I was in or not. It might be worth it to you to get in touch!

Also, there was a UWO acceptance posted yesterday but I literally just spoke to the grad chair who said they haven't even met… Weird.

  5. Does anyone know what's going on with Western? As far as I know it's been radio silence… I've been accepted to UofT (and am 99.9% sure I will be accepting as it's always been my top choice) but I'm hesitant to formally accept until I know. There's a deadline at UofT that's fast approaching so I'm half tempted to just email them but I thought I'd ask first.

  6. Hello everyone,

I am a senior at a small liberal arts university, and I am thinking of applying to PhD programs for Fall 2015. I would like to focus on immigration history, specifically the wave of Eastern Europeans in the early 20th century. Does anyone have any suggestions on strong programs with this focus?

    Thanks!

Wave of Eastern European immigrants to where? Who exactly do you mean when you say "Eastern Europeans"? Do you have a specific group you're interested in? I just finished my MA in Canadian ethnic/immigration history (with a focus on a specific Eastern European ethnic group) and am currently playing the waiting game for PhD programs. If you want to talk through some of this stuff feel free to shoot me a private message!

  7. I've applied for MA at UBC and Queens. UBC is under review and Queens is showing application complete. Crossing fingers for both (not history though.... I noticed this after I posted.).

I just finished my MA at Queen's (in History but worked closely with Geography faculty) if you have any questions!

  8. Hello! Hope you hear something soon. Applied to Toronto for a PhD -- it's one of the best fits for my research interests.

I've also applied to U of T for a PhD (F14). I'm getting nervous because the first acceptances (according to GradCafe) were sent out on February 10th last year. But, so far, no one I know, and no one on here, has been accepted yet which leads me to believe they're just taking longer this year because they're also currently in the process of hiring a new Canadianist. Who knows. Fingers crossed for all of us!
