  1. CONGRATS! You deserve it! I sent an email to Illinois State to see where they were at in the process. I was told they were finalizing everything this week and applicants will receive notification next week. I just want out of limbo land..

I really enjoyed myself when I visited Kent and Taryn has been very communicative and helpful during this whole process which I, personally believe speaks volume of the program. I am highly positive that I am going to Kent State, like I said earlier, I just want out of this limbo land.

:]:] I totally understand wanting to know even though you're feeling fairly confident in your decision.  I've felt pretty confident for a long time in where I was going, I heard pretty earlier on about my acceptance to where I wanted to go but I still really wanted to hear from the other places and feel like I was making an informed decision.

Taryn rocks, 100% recommend working with her.  I think you'll definitely get a lot out of being at Kent and can't recommend it enough.

  2. Yeah, I emailed Karla back asking if there was a ranking list. She didn't know my exact ranking but that I was in the second tier. She said that they may already have their positions filled from what she had knowledge of... so who knows?  She was very nice and encouraging! - If that helps any. ;)

Yeah, I was accepted with full funding to my top choice, so I'm not super worried about what was happening with them. I didn't respond yet, though I plan to email sometime eventually to let them know I've committed elsewhere-it doesn't seem like it will matter, thoug.

  3. Received a phone call from Kent State University for a Skype interview, since it's my spring break I'm going to visit andhave an in-person interview! Here is to hoping for a good response. I also checked UK's portal and I was rejected.

Congrats!! Also, I'll be hosting you on Tuesday for a bit when you visit.

  4. Accepted to Northwestern's art theory and practice. This program has such a great faculty, and it's the best funding offer so far. I can't understand why it's ranked so low in us news. Considering it very seriously.

I was told by some of the faculty where I am that the US News lists are basically comprised from surveys they send to the directors and deans and whatnot and essentially they're asked to rank the schools, but the rankings mostly just end up being influenced by what schools those people filling the surveys out have heard of or are hearing buzz about.  So there's some basis of truth-a good school is going to be generating buzz-but also schools like Columbia and Yale are likely always going to be on them because they're well known and they have mucho money and rep so they're always going to be able to be recruiting and hiring 'top most amazing artists 4 ever' to teach, but other schools with just as rewarding and intensive programs are left off because they're not as universally well known.  Essentially they're an okay place to start, but make sure you're on the lookout for schools that are fitting to you personally, look at who is there, what is happening and what is available to you.  Obviously what you're experiencing with Northwestern is a reflection of that.

  5. Wow congrats, and I know what you mean. It will be interesting to see what the offer. Very steep tuition as you said. Smart of you to wait and reapply again to other programs.

What they offered me was something like 6 credits of tuition remission and a $3000 stipend (as part of an assistantship that required 7 hours/week of work) And then they also offered me a merit scholarship of something around $6000.  I can't remember totally but I think you have to have 9 credits a semester to get done there on time?  It was a really generous and I was a little bummed and worried I made the wrong decision for awhile, but I'm feeling much better now.  In comparison this year I've been so far offered 2 full GA ships (that cover full time attendance, so around 12 credits/semester and 6 credits in summer) one includes full health coverage and the other covers 60% of the healthcare cost and then one is a $15,000 stipend and the other is $11000 stipend + $3000 fellowship. So I'm really glad I waited and I am really excited about where I've applied this year.

  6. Did anyone else apply for American U? The program is growing and DC is a cool place right now. Have no idea where I'm going. I was told Carnegie Mellon is deliberating on the 17th. Trying to wait it out til then.

I applied and was accepted to American U last year and was really excited about it. I ended up with a fair amount of funding, but since it's a private school with private school levels of tuition I still would have had to at least take out full loan amounts in order to attend and probably work at least part time on top of the assistantship they awarded me to live there so I opted out of it.  DC is amazing, though, and I think I would have been really happy there, it just wasn't right for me financially.

  7. I've been creepin heavy on this forum -

Anyone hear back from UW Seattle outside the 3d4m realm?

How about RIT or Syracuse outside of Photo?

Thus far accepted to Davis - SMFA

Interviewing with Purchase - anyone else?

I know someone who's been accepted into Syracuse in print, but I don't know about any of the others

  8. How much debt are you guys okay with accumulating for your art degree?

Louisiana state university offered me a free ride plus stipend and they said they need an answer this week. I visited and I didn't like it at all. But it's freeee. And the other schools that I got into are pretty expensive. I'm scared I'm going to look back on this and kick myself for not accepting lsu's offer. What do I do?!?! What are you guys doing?!?!

I was in a similar situation last year and I decided to wait, build my portfolio and get some teaching experience and this time around I've been accepted into some of my top programs with full GAships and stipends, so it's definitely worth taking the time instead of going somewhere you will be miserable for whatever reason.

  9. I ended up talking to them this afternoon - yeah! I feel really good about the conversation I had with Brad Allen and am really excited at the potential to be officially accepted. I am going to have another conversation with them about funding next week. Was it the same kind of thing for you? Like basically a check in/recruitment call?

I also noticed you got into Indiana U and wanted to say congratulations! I don't know how you're making your decision, but Tracy Templeton is an amazzzzzing printmaking professor out there (She used to work at Southern Oregon U, where I go now) and I'd HIGHLY recommend her. Just FYI. I've heard Bloomington has a pretty awesome print program.

That is essentially what my discussion was as well! He told me the same thing about funding and we chatted a bit about SGCI.  We talked a little bit about the general opportunities for funding and stuff too. He did say that almost anyone who's interested can get funded opportunities like GAships and stuff, which is excellent. He was really nice and answered all my questions.

Indiana University is pretty much my top choice! They're just figuring out funding and I'm also really, really interested in Tulane and working with Teresa Cole, so if I get into both I'll have a really hard decision to make. I met Tracy (as well as Ellie Honl and Brandon Gunn) at MAPC this year and they were sooooo awesome and I am really excited to work with them!! Thanks for the information too, it's always hard when you're meeting people at professional functions or in interviews because they're on their best behavior for recruiting reasons and stuff, so I'm glad she has a good rep beyond that (though I never would have suspected otherwise based on my experience with her!)

  10. I have been checking the search results on grad cafe like a bad habit - but JUST discovered this forum.

Seems like a lot of folks are applying to the top 10 / lots of east coast schools.

I'm waiting to hear back from U of Washington, UC Irvine, U of Montana, and Portland State U.

I've interviewed at Portland State, and PNCA.

Been accepted at MCAD, and PNCA thus far, but am holding out for a public school. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone have any insight on the timeline for Irvine?

U of Montana called me yesterday evening! Their director called me around 6pm my time so 4 there, I hope you heard too!

  11. Same here! I am trying my best to resist the urge to call anyone about decision-making...gah. I did send Michael Barnes an email, requesting feedback on my application, just in case I'll be doing this next year...which I sincerely hope not.

Yeah, I probably won't call anywhere unless I want to be absolutely sure before I make my final decision.

  12. Yeah, I will definitely let you know. I met Sarah and Morgan when I toured ISU, they were pretty awesome. During our tour of the litho space, we got derailed from print/grad talk to talking about Doctor Who... I'll see what my finances looks like in a couple of weeks and let you know, and also to see if my department would be interested in supporting me in my travels/fees somehow.

I heard from all my recommenders, and they gave me the greenlight so I've finished my application to Kent State. Now I'm just waiting to find out what my application/banner # is and I will be uploading my portfolio, hopefully by the end of the week!

  13. Awesome, thank you so much! I am already starting the application. I emailed my reccomenders to see if they wouldn't mind do one more recommendation in a short time period.

I considered going to SGCI. I know I can pay the late registration and go, which I might do since it's during Spring Break. Driving to and from Missouri took a lot of energy by myself, but Knoxville is a lot closer. Sadly, our  printmaking professor retired and the current printlab is basically closed..so I haven't been able to persuade others to go from my University... if I can get another individual to go, I'll definitely pay the late fee and go! In short, I might be going... sorr for the long ramble.

  14. I have a few professor that went to Ohio University, they had interesting things to say and the faculty they knew but that was about 20ish years ago. I have a friend their but for Appalachian Studies. I wish I could've gone to the past MAPC... I went to the one in Missouri and had a blast.

Asked today and Kent State's deadline is just a recommended deadline and they will continue to look at applications/offer assistantships until the spots are filled. They do not plan to fill the spots from the current pool of applicants.  I'd encourage you to apply and I'll happily show you around or anything if you'd like to visit.  If I remember correctly the application fee is really low so it's definitely worth a shot.

MAPC in the fall was a blast. Will you be attending SGCI?

  15. If it isn't a problem, that would be great, thanks!  They have a grad student directory and some of their printmakers are on there with photos of their work. I honestly didn't think I would get an interview with IUB. NIU and IUB are tied for the top picks. Next is Illinois State and Miami University. Ohio University is pretty well ranked, I like the professors work and of current grad students but I doubt I'll get accepted. I feel like I didn't do enough research. University Kentucky's Jonnathan McFadden is new to the department, but his work and installation pieces are awesome. I love Kentucky but I want to venture out of the state so it's last on my list.

I'll ask our department head when I see him next.  I'm not sure how updated the website here is but you'd be working with Michael Loderstedt and Taryn McMahon. I don't think he has a huge web presence but Nick Skowron also teaches at KSU as an adjunct and is amazing. Both Taryn and Michael rock and are hugely supportive and like I said there is a full assistantship and stipend available among a number of other awards that are available every spring.

I am really excited about almost everywhere I applied, there's not really a huge "top/bottom" distinction for me. IUB is a more definitive top because I met all of their print faculty at MAPC and they proved to be super amazing, whereas I didn't have that experience with almost any of my other schools. Sean P. Morrisey visited Kent and knows both of the professors I mentioned so I've heard good things about him and some of the OU faculty talked at MAPC and left a good impression but I didn't really meet them.  I hear the area where their studios are is super beautiful, though apparently Athens, OH itself doesn't have much to offer, from what I've heard.  They're reknowned around here for parties and apparently they have a lot of weird festivals or something? OU has a good, highly ranked program with good facilities and a lot of offerings in other areas that I find really exciting, but like you mentioned with Kentucky I kind of want to be out of Ohio.

  16. Kent State was on my original list, I checked the site and it said the deadline was Feb. 2nd, but if things don't go so well this round I'll be sure to apply to them for the next round!  Thank you for showing my prints to your class, that makes me feel pretty awesome.  I haven't heard anything from NIU (just checked my email) so here is to hoping that's a good sign!  Michael Barnes is an awesome guy, and his personal litho press kicks apple! When I got rejected a couple years ago, I was checking the portal and saw the rejection.

I also creeped on you as well, so no worries. Also, when I visited Illinois State, they told me they only accepted people that they have money to fund, which rumor has it, is two for the upcoming Fall. They were also waiting for a greenlight to start a new building complex for the visual arts and getting upgrade their printmaking facilities. I don't know what the status of that is, at the current moment. I don't know much about Ohio University, on funding or how many they are taking in. I think IUB is taking in 4 printmakers for the upcoming Fall at least that's speculation that my friend (IUB Ceramics Dept.) told me earlier today.

Yeah! I hope your lack of word from NIU = acceptance.  Kurt Schultz emailed me, so I don't know if he is in charge of all communication or just the sad communication.

Last year Kent State extended their printmaking deadline, if you want I can check for you if they'll be doing the same.  I heard the same about Illinois State at MAPC! So that's probably promising, but I think they have a pretty good reputation and probably get a lot of applicants.  They're one of my top choices, with IUB being the top.  Arkansas offered me a fellowship, which is pretty awesome. Sean P. Morrisey is their head and he's pretty awesome, I'd be happy to go there but most likely I'll be attending IUB.  Probably the only thing that would change that is if I get accepted to Tulane or Illinois State (both of which basically auto fully fund) and don't get any funding from IUB.  I also am pretty clueless to Ohio University, I don't have super high hopes for there because Art Werger, amazing as he is is their head and he's a pretty traditional printmaker (which I am not), however most of the others in the department are actually rather nontraditional? So it will depend a lot on how much say everyone has probably.

  17. I sent Tracy some post questions on the 11th, and I have been checking my phone religiously, haha... Well, I am going to assume that I got rejected, but I am very pleased with myself  on getting an interview! (Thinking positively)  I actually visited NIU and ISU and they were really awesome, each  gave some really good feedback for my work. This is also my second time applying to NIU, I applied back in 2013. Thanks for giving me the info, it's great knowing that there is another printmaker going through the waiting as well as applying to majority of the same schools! Good choices if I do say so myself!

I have a facebook, you can find me as Cecily Brooke and I also have a facebook page for my work; https://www.facebook.com/cecilybrookeprintmaker. Feel free to add me or comment on my work. My school only consists of two Grad Printmakers (me included) so I'm excited to branch out to meet new printmakers and other fine artists!

Yeah! I would be proud of getting an interview, and I know they weren't sure on funding yet so if you got an interview you're likely to be in their tops if someone declines!  I got an email from NIU about an hour ago with not good news, but it was a very personal and surprisingly uplifting email for what it was haha! So I hope you heard otherwise.  I actually creeped last night (your username isn't really a cipher haha) and in my intro to print class we're starting monoprints so I showed them some of yours, I'll be sure to look you up on the social media a bit later.

Also, I definitely recommend checking out Kent State, that's where I did my undergrad and where I"m teaching now and they have some great printmakers, resources and excellent funding.  It's within 45 minutes of Cleveland which is a good hub for art and printmakers.  Plus you'd be in a huge brand new shop in the fall.  Let me know if you have any questions about that, I believe they're still accepting applications.

  18. Hey, I just found this forum. I applied to a few MFA Printmaking programs NIU, IUB, OU, ISU, Miami U (Ohio), and UK. I had a Skype interview 2/4 with IUB and I sent an email with a few post question, and Tracy said decisions would be posted in a few weeks...

Hello! We applied to a lot of the same places! I haven't heard anything from NIU, ISU, or Ohio University but Tracy called me last Tuesday in the evening to let me know I was accepted at IUB, so maybe double check that you haven't missed any calls from the Bloomington area code. It definitely came in with Bloomington on the CID.  I heard at MAPC that UK had some really excellent funding opportunities in the works so if you get in there you have the potential for great funding.  ISU, I believe, also has really great funding and I heard that anyone accepted is pretty much automatically awarded a GAship and stipend, but I am not sure how accurate that is.

I know you didn't ask about any of that stuff, but I wasn't sure if you were aware and I was just excited to see someone with similar schools they're interested in and whatnot.

  19. Hi,

first of all, thanks to those who've helped by giving their insight and have shared their experiences. Many lessons learned in this process as this was my first time applying after being out of school for a bit and kind of out of the art world. I'm thankful to have gotten into 2 schools (of 9), one I'm pretty happy about, but they would both require a serious uproot and I'm not quite ready for that. I will probably reapply next year.

In the meantime, does anyone know of any programs on the east coast that offer great technique based classes, or several-week intensives just to get some work done and maybe trigger some new approaches in my own work? ....And to work alongside other talented folk. Nyss seems a little too traditional but I may be wrong, I also don't know much about it. Any other suggestions? Many thanks!

Ps. Happy to see some of you have gotten good acceptances after so much waiting...

    Hey there,

Kent State offers a summer program that is two weeks long in Painting/Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture and several crafts oriented sessions. If you go to http://www.kent.edu/art there should be more information. The program is called Blossom and the info lists all of the guest artists and stuff.
