  1. I have decided to accept Penn State's offer and will be joining you this Fall. However, I started looking for a place to live a bit late. I would much rather live near campus since i won't have a car (at least for the first year). Did your departments have sent you anything related to housing? I'm afraid I won't be receiving this kind of stuff from my department.. Do you guys have any comments/tips or suggestions of nice places near campus (or at least near a bus route)?
  2. I'm not officially accepted yet, but my POI said I will probably be accepted (we're pretty close, I have even coauthored conference papers with him). Since we're getting close to April 15th, I don't wanna waste time when (if I) receive the decision. iphi, thanks for the tip! Does the fact that the department probably have a fat waiting list can influence their answer? I'm worried it might.
  3. Hi all! How can I politely ask if the department allow me to defer the application? The thing is that I'm a little concerned about not finishing and having my masters degree in time in order to enroll for the PhD (the department requires a MS degree for their PhD program). The department website does not mention anything related to application deferring. Ideally, I'd like to start the program in Spring '15. Please note that the department in question is top 3 in my field. Would this affect in any way their response?
  4. I can provide you some feedback as well. PM me your SOP. I'm from aerospace eng. field.
  5. I cannot really answer your question, but I must say that I have heard this same information regarding MIT AstroAero. I got a friend who's doing his PhD in mechanical and he told me this story over and over. However, I don't know if it is actually true or not.
  6. Does anyone have any news on Illinois and Texas A&M?
  7. I contacted and visited every department/professors I was interested in (only 4 programs, though). As I'm an international applicant, that definitely helped in every aspect of my application. Some of the benefits I can list: - The professors could see that I was serious about the type of study I wanted to pursue (one eventually said, in these very words: "I'm impressed that you're taking the time, effort and expense to visit our department") - It definitely helped on my decisions to what school would be my first and second choice - I was able to write a SOP that was very very specific and tailored for each school/department - While visiting a professor, in some cases others professors became interested in talking with me (always remember to send an email to graduate admissions office as well!). In one program, this "second professor" became my first choice in that school and I realized my first choice professor was a bit rude. - Besides the meet with potential advisors, you get to see the atmosphere of the city, talk with some others grad students and so on. - You end up having someone to email when you're desperate about your decision and it's March already. I couldn't see myself applying to a school without making a contact whatsoever with a professor. If you can, I would visit the professors you're interested in.
  8. HockeyNerd, Most of my apps are indeed aerospace, but I have applied for Illinois CEE department as well (and it is my first choice school). Thanks for your response.
  9. HockeyNerd, Where did you get the information about decisions starting on March 1st? I'm freaking out with this wait
  10. On A&M admission website they're saying the final admission decision will be out by Feb 28th. E-mailed POI asking about news but he haven't heard anything yet from admissions office. No news on UIUC. Heard from Penn State this week. Was accepted and POI is nominating me for a new "graduate fellowship of excellence" offered by the university. POI appears to be more excited than I am.
