CrashJupiter replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Whoever got into Rice from the wait list: Double grats! While every acceptance is amazing, getting in off the wait list in February is incredible. -

Are both Oregon acceptances the same person? The notes start exactly the same way on both. -

I am currently in my second year of the MA program at SC. If you have any questions or anything, let me know. -
2015 Rejections

I took my Pitt rejection in stride, perhaps because I suspected it was coming a week ahead of time. Today's blunt, impersonal rejection from Calgary was devastating. -

If you could magic up an acceptance for me at Colorado or Calgary, I'll send you a cake. To Knoxville, if need be. I've been trying to cast Expecto Acceptus, but I may have used all my magic up trying to make it snow in South Carolina. -

If you're an obsessive type (and hey, it's likely, given where we are and what we're talking about), I have to recommend trying pepakura. It's a weird combination of meticulous and mindless that really has helped my unproductive reloading and worrying while I'm waiting. Plus it's super cheap, since we all just spent something like $1000 on applications. $6 in 110 lb. cardstock, $2 for an Xacto (if you don't have one), and a buck or two for some glue. -

Finally heard from my first school, Pitt. I knew it was coming since about Monday, but at least it's official. -

No problem! It's really nice to know for sure. Also, the Graduate College should not be sending such loaded language to people whose business is finding and analyzing loaded language. -

This is what I'm telling myself and why I didn't immediately send back an email asking for clarification. Thanks, though! Each person that tells me this calms my nerves a bit. -

Let me know what you hear! I figured I'd give the department at least 24 hours to send me something else before I sent anything out, mostly for my own sanity. Waiting in general is better than waiting in specifics. -

I just received one of those non-departmental "possible fake-out" emails. It includes possible red herrings like "your Director of Graduate studies" (emphasis mine, originally linked to the institution's DGS), "your Admissions Officer" (emphasis mine, with link to table of all AOs at said institution), and "will be even greater because of students such as you." I checked the application website. No change. This is the first I've heard from them. First thing I've heard from any of my applications, in fact. I'm telling myself not to get my hopes up, but logic isn't working here. Oh, PhD apps. Why must you toy with me so? -

Weird, paranoid question for the Pittsburgh admits/rejections: Did your application status on the application website change? I'm not yet willing to write it off as an implied rejection. -
Good to know about the funding, so thanks! In my particular area, the degree does translate across the border as far as job searches go. It's not any easier than most second-tier American universities, but it's also not any harder, especially in the case of Toronto. In postcolonial / world literature in English, Toronto is considered one of the higher tier schools, even here, which is why I'm interested in applying to these two schools in the first place.

Hey all, I'll be applying to PhD programs in the fall and am currently putting together my application materials and whittling down my school choices. I'll be applying for a spot in a PhD in Literature program, with postcolonial / world literature in English as my emphasis. As of now, both the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto are on my long list. Is there anyone around that is an American who has gone to Canada for graduate school? Were there any unforeseen difficulties in the move? Is there any weirdness in the way funding goes or anything? Any and all information and advice would be welcome. I searched around, but haven't found anything specific. Thank you, Christopher

Hello, all. I'm current a Master's student / teaching assistant at the University of South Carolina. I'm looking toward a postcolonial / contemporary world lit focus for my PhD, and will be applying in the fall for Fall 2015. I'm starting early because I want to thoroughly research and, hopefully, build some relationships with professors at these schools. I'll be graduating with a 3.9+ GPA and a thesis, but I am still unlikely to be a top competitor. I'm most interested in the Black Atlantic and transoceanic (Atlantic/Indian Ocean) studies and am attempting to build a strong base in postcolonial, queer, and utopian theory. Preferably, my PhD experience will allow a combination of all three. I would like any tips on programs to begin looking into and any warnings against programs that you may have. At this point, just about anything is helpful, so don't hold back. Thank you.
