  1. I realize that this is the GradCafe equivalent of "first world problems," but is anyone else having a hard time clicking the button or checking the box to decline an admission offer? I picked a program that seems like the right fit for me, but I keep thinking, what if this school is actually better/has more to offer/has better job placement/is where I was meant to go?

So much anxiety. Anyone else experiencing this? Any advice?

  2. I don't get it. I know people who heard almost 2 weeks ago, and a bunch who were rejected last week. The deadline for most schools is tomorrow, and I haven't heard a peep from QC either way. The line has been, "We notify candidates when a decision has been made."

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from QC either way? I'm starting to think my application is lost under a desk somewhere.

Whatever happens, there's a difference between "selective and exclusive" and "unprofessional." This is the latter. When you know a deadline is approaching, to keep a bunch of people (or is it just me?) hanging without an answer is just wrong. Really sours me on the whole program.

  3. I'm a bit naive on this. Just wondering if anyone know which schools in the NY/NJ area (including CUNY and SUNY) have good or bad health insurance plans for full time students.

Particularly interested in Buffalo State College, New Paltz, Hunter, and Brooklyn College. You can see my list of schools below. Any others there that you may have some insight on would be appreciated as well!

    Thanks!

  4. I received an unofficial acceptance e-mail this morning! "It is with great pleasure that we offer you admission to the Master of Arts program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech Language Pathology (CMLP) at Montclair State University. We are pleased to send this early notification of your application status. Your official acceptance letter will be arriving in the mail shortly." Best of luck to everyone else who applied!

That makes two of us! Congrats!!!

  5. Hi,

I'm the mom of students attending Buffalo State College.  We live in North Buffalo, a few miles away from the college.  I find it to be convenient, pretty safe, and affordable.  On a bus route if a car is unavailable.  Depending on number of roommates, kids are paying between $200 and $400 for rent.  It's best to try to find something in May when kids are moving out.  I find Depew and Amherst to be a little far if you have a choice.  Depew is a suburb, but not one that a lot of people I know who choose to live in the city would want to live in.  Amherst is nice but costly, especially since students from UB (University at Buffalo) are closer to Amherst.  They pay a lot for some pretty shabby places where the neighborhoods have turned to all rental.  Elmwood Village - has some really nice homes, mansions and has some doubles and other rental units.  So, you will find out owner occupied homes and people care about the neighborhood.  Most younger people who come here - if they live in another area - end up wanting to live off of Elmwood.  If you can find a place off of Elmwood Avenue, some blocks away from Buffalo State you should be able to find nice, affordable living.  The homes are older.  Or in North Buffalo, like off of Hertel Avenue is good too.  When the weather gets bad (like this winter) it makes a difference living closer.  Elmwood Village, just so you know, is the neighborhood that Buffalo State is in.  Very close to college - some may say is "dicey", but a few blocks more and it's pretty nice.  Hope this helps

Thank you! This is great - so helpful!

Hey again, I'm duffs all the way haha. I know many who disagree though.

I agree with the above poster that the Hertel area is another good area to live if you like to be in city limits. As far as commute times, it takes me under 20 minutes, but I come from a bigger city so a 20 minute commute time is nothing for me. And I know many people who live in the Elmwood area and pay a lot more so I guess it depends what you find. I like having woods in my backyard and don't mind the commute.

Have you had a chance to visit the area? If not you should consider looking around before making your decision on schools.

I've been to Buffalo a few times before, and it seems really nice for the most part. I've been to Duff's. so at least I know I'm in good company!

  6. Anyone hear from SJU? I got an email on Friday that said "Now that you've been accepted" and was asking me if I knew I was going to enroll, if I was going somewhere else, or if I was unsure. There was also an option to make a deposit. Thing is, I never received an email, letter, or phone call actually saying I was accepted.

Just confused. Hoping someone else may have heard or got a similar email?

  7. My application status changed this morning! "Application Status (Information as of March 29, 2014 6:04 am), Status: Decision Made - Please allow up to two weeks to receive decision letter." Has anyone received an e-mail?

That's exciting! Did you receive an email letting you know, or did you log in to see?

  8. As far as suburbs, I was looking at like Depew or Amherst. I'll definitely have a car, so what's the rush hour traffic situation like, and are there any areas where it's hard to find parking? Which neighborhoods would say to avoid from a safety perspective?

  9. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! It would be great to kinda "know" someone before getting up there.

As for places to live, I've heard good things about Elmwood Village. Where would you recommend or not recommend looking for a place? I'm looking for someplace that isn't overcrowded but still a busy and walkable neighborhood, and most importantly safe. On the other hand, what are some nice suburbs outside of Buffalo that would make for an easy commute? Just looking for a good starting point! Thanks!!!

  10. This is a great forum with a strong sense of community. It dawned on me today that although we seem to be developing e-friendships, I don't even know some of your first names. This thread will allow us to get to know one another beyond our mutual passion for speech-language pathology.

My name is Amanda and I am twenty-one years old. I was born and raised in Central New Jersey. For the first two years of my collegiate career, I attended Montclair State University as an English major with the intention of applying to the teacher education program. After my sophomore year, I transferred to the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey to major in communication disorders and minor in holistic health. When I am not in class, I enjoy working as a substitute teacher. My hobbies include sports, history, alternative/indie music, and traveling. My favorite teams are the New Jersey Devils, the New York Mets, and the New York Giants. My favorite destinations are Newport, Rhode Island and the Outer Banks, North Carolina. One fun fact about me is that my cousin Rene Gagnon was one of the Iwo Jima flag raisers during WWII.

I hope to have the opportunity to meet some of you in the future! If you have any lingering questions, feel free to ask!

    :)

Amanda, this is a great thread! I'm new to the forum and haven't really had a chance to get to know too many handles yet, but it's really nice to see what looks like such a supportive online community.

I'm Mike, and I grew up on Long Island. I'm 31 (yikes!) and this is my second go around in college after getting my first degree from Syracuse in broadcast journalism. I've worked as a sports play-by-play announcer for the past 9 years (still working) and went back for my undergrad prereqs when I decided to pursue speech. At the time, I was just looking for a change and was hoping this was it, but I've been in love with the field since my first day of classes, and now I can't wait to become a full-fledged SLP! Starting grad school in the Fall, and hoping to stay where I am now, so fingers crossed. Very lucky that I already have options either way.

Look forward to hearing from more of you, and best of luck to everyone!!!
