  1. Just wondering - if no funding is mentioned in my intial e-mail/pdf letter offering admission, does that mean that I am not being offered funding at all? Or do some universities offer it later, say perhaps after you accept? If anyone has specific info about university of Victoria and funding offers please let me know..

  2. Hey Guys! New to the forum, and I have a few questions about the MPH applications:

    1) For SFU, when I click "View Application Status", it gives me information about what I applied for, but nothing about the status of my application. Is this the same for anyone else?

    2) For Memorial, I applied for MPH Pop'n and Public Health. My application status reads "Application Processing Has Begun", and lists that I need to send in "Confirmation of Degree - Bachelor's When Complete". Does this mean that I won't receive an admission decision until I finish my BSc (mid-April when I finish, probably no grades until May, and then sending the transcript takes at least a week...). I've heard from others that Memorial usually sends acceptances by early April?

    Any insight would be appreciated!

I have a feeling that if everything else in your application for Memorial is complete that you could get a conditional admit, as long as you send in your degree completion when that happens. Does that make sense?

  3. Scratch my pessimistic and catastrophic sounding post the other day - I've received an unofficial offer from UVic this afternoon!! I will apparently be getting the official offer in my e-mail shortly :) I am almost in disbelief at this opportunity - and very excited!

  4. This is probably ridiculously pathetic but I think my heart just broke realizing that I'm most likely not getting into UVic if offers went out today. Don't think my research is something they are interested in on top of the fact that I barely have a 91 average. Not very hopeful for lakehead either. Pretty hefty dose of reality right here.

    f*ck.

  5. I have read in the topics from other years that it is a good sign if UVic asks for an official transcript, so what I'm wondering is ... If you already go to UVic and there is a second transcript slot that says "UVic Transcript" on top of the "unofficial transcript" slot, is that the same thing? Does anyone know?

  6. I think they accept unofficial transcripts but I'm not sure if you have one since you haven't completed your degree.  I would contact Graduate Studies about this if I were you.  Best of luck!

Yes, but like most universities, they will accept unofficial transcripts and if you get offered acceptance you may have to provide official.  I'm not sure what the situation is if you aren't completing your undergrad degree until August.  I would also recommend contacting the graduate studies office as they would be able to to best advise you.

Just a note that I contacted grad studies like you two suggested and they replied and said:

"Your application will be assessed as normal and if you are given an offer of admission you will have to show the proof of degree once you graduate. You may continue to receive 'gentle reminders' from the system which you may disregard."

To my relief :) Now at least my application can still be considered!

  7. Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking this forum for a few weeks now and finally have some good news to post!  I've received an unofficial acceptance email from Lakehead for their Distance MPH program this morning!  My application was completed the day before the deadline so it looks like their Admission Committee is pretty speedy.  Hopefully this will give other Lakehead applicants some idea on how fast they work since they don't have a set date on when decisions are made.

    Good luck everyone!  :)

I probably screwed myself over by just putting in my application to Lakehead yesterday (I also did a CIHR grant app). Just wondering how folks who are still doing their degree are able to submit proof of completion? I'll be done in August - so enough time to start a Master's in Sept - but will my application for Lakehead not be complete until then??

Other than that, my app to UVic says "interim review". What do other UVic applicants see/know about yet?

  8. Out of curiosity, have you heard anything yet? This thread is totally dominated by the east...!

I wouldn't worry too much about the process being less than perfect. They did not even spell my name right, despite it being on no less than every document submitted. ;) As long as my BSc gets it's right, that's all that matters I suppose...

The MPH program seems quite popular, so it's expected that things will take longer to process. I don't know much about it, but it looks like there's no specific undergrad degree leading to it, so evaluations become that much harder.

You could give them a call and ask what's up. I fail to understand why they cannot provide status updates to applicants. Surely there are some preliminary screening processes, like axing everybody with a 2.0 GPA or missing courses? I think it would ease students' anxiety if they could know they at least made it to a stage where acceptance is within the realm of possibility. That's why I mentioned the official GPA request on UVic's page; I think that's a good sign they're taking a serious look, since they wouldn't burden the record's department with pointless requests.

Just to let you know I still haven't heard anything ... also in terms of no undergrad degrees leading to the MPH - doesn't the public health and social policy bachelors lead into an MPH degree? I hope social work isn't too out of bounds for them, and I'm a little nervous to hear it is so popular! I haven't tried contacting them because I don't want to be a nuisance. Do you go to UVic as well? I have to spend 3.5 hrs there tomorrow presenting my research at IdeaFest - and I am not sure I could hate public speaking more -_- Hope we hear soon!

  9. If I were you I would just wait out a decision and then if you do get in, then I would contact professors at that point to see if they are interested. Then you can see if it is a potential option without coming off like you are are trying to get them to help you out. The professors who you mentioned in your SOP (or general reserach area if you didnt mention professors by name) will more than likely recive and review your application even though you didnt email them. Emailing is helpful in knowing which schools are a good match but not necesary to get in. I would just wait it out now and see what happens!

Yes, thank you for your responses :)

  10. New to here but see some really great information. I applied to the UVIC online MPA, anyone have any idea of when I should hear back. My status has been sitting forwarded for review for close to 3 weeks. Anyone here every applied for this program that can offer some insight?

    Thanks :)

I'd love to know if anyone else has the answer to this question. Mine is sitting "App Forwarded: Interim Review" as well... I guess that just means they're doing their first round of checks to see if folks have submitted everything necessary? Did anyone else who applied to UVic contact a potential faculty advisor? I didn't and now I feel like I missed something important :(

  11. So I checked my status on Western's site and it's changed to "Offered Admission". I haven't gotten any actual word from the school itself, and their website says that they send out decisions Mid March-Late April, so I am really hoping this is not some glitch. From the looks of the results page a lot of people have been accepted via Website with no official word, so I'm trying not to worry too much...

    Congrats :)

  12. Let's be honest here--UVic is not exactly organized.

Check your application. In the table of items (references, payment, etc.), has your official (UVic) transcript been (automatically) requested? It would have a date some time after you submitted your application. I'm assuming you're a UVic student and did not provide them with an official transcript, since it's your home school.

If it has been requested, that's a sign they are either considering you or reviewing your submission.

Wanting more applicants could be due to wanting more foreign/other Canadian school/UVic students to have a balanced entrance class. My advisor told me that UVic tries to target a certain demographic mixture of graduate students [per program]. Odds are, your chances will not have been affected.

Thank you for posting this :) So far my status says "App forwarded: Interim review", and when you mention that they're looking for a balanced entry class that makes sense! Phew. I have been doing my undergrad there as a social work student yeah, and I remember not hearing from them until April about that - do you think there's a chance that hearing about grad school takes as long? In terms of the official transcript, it says that they got my unofficial one when I applied on Jan 15th, but it looks like on Feb 11th they requested another one, I hope that is good news :)

  13. I applied to the MPH program at Uvic and I've heard nothing so far - I just checked their website and it says they extended the deadline for MPH applications from Jan 15th (when I submitted mine) to Feb 15th. I'm trying not to freak out and think this is because they thought they didn't get enough good applicants (including me) :(
