  1. I figure its safe to make this now. Anyone else apply to PhD urban planning programs this cycle? MURP applicants welcome as well. I applied to USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, UI Chicago and Michigan's PhD programs. Got rejected from UCLA. I suspect USC will begin releasing decisions this or next week. USC Price has already begun releasing decisions for its Public Policy program. Anyone else have any luck?
  2. Even so, I would urge caution. I have seen several well qualified friends apply to PhD programs and underestimate how brutal the competition is. Anyway. I have a similar background to yourself. I have a BA in Economics and will be finishing a terminal MA degree in the field this year. I intend to try to make the switch over to sociology for my PhD though. I too am concerned whether my academic background will be a hindrance. What I'm heavily relying on is the writing sample. I figure that the writing sample is the best shot I have to prove that I both that I have read the sociology literature and that my economics training is applicable across disciplines. I'm applying mainly to the UCs myself.
  3. Hello there. Long time lurker, infrequent poster. I just wanted to share a resource (click here) I am developing for those of you are Dreamers/undocumented/illegal and considering graduate school. I am basically contacting as many research universities as I can and trying to get responses on their policies regarding us. It goes without saying that it is difficult to acquire information given our lack of status, so I hope this is of some help. The resource is still new, and my plan is to cover the major research universities in California, Texas, and New York first before branching out.
  4. I did my undergraduate in Economics and doing a Master's in it currently. However, if I'm truthful with myself, I'm more interested in Sociology work than Economics. I do believe that Economics has some useful research methods and that is why I am doing my Master's in it, but I'm debating whether I should go for my PhD afterward or switch over to Sociology for my PhD. I'm concerned that if I end up getting an Economics PhD I might have a hard time finding employment in a Sociology department. Ideally I'd want to get into Cal Tech's Social Science PhD program since it'd allow me to do interdisciplinary work between the two field, but failing that I'm not sure. I find it a bit silly that the two fields haven't synthesized into a new field but oh well. Anyone else in a similar situation?
